The BBC is searching for an ethical fashion stylist

Filed under: Style in the News, Contests & Giveaways, Style for a Cause

Maybe you're not a designer, but you have the magic touch when it comes to putting together an outfit. And perhaps you are also very into ethical style, reworking vintage into something new, or finding the newest organic styles? If you're also over 16 and in England, you should totally enter the BBC Thread's Style Search Competition.

Four finalists get to go to London Fashion Week in September, and the winner gets to work with a stylist on a runway show. All you have to do is upload a digital photo of an outfit that you styled, and hope that the eco-fabulous experts think you're the best.

Well, there's a little more to it than that. If you're interested, check out the criteria and rules. But hurry! Deadline for entries is coming up fast: August 26, 2008.

Britain's Missing Top Model explores the question of beauty and disability

Filed under: Style in the News

A new BBC show is ready to challenge the fashion world's notions about marketable beauty. Britain's Missing Top Model, like American's Next Top Model and the ilk, brings together several beauties and puts them through a series of competitions where they have to use real life modeling "skills." The winner is awarded with an exclusive photo spread in Marie Claire, and presumably lasting fame and fortune.

The twist? These models all have some form of disability.

Gah. As much as we hate Heather Mills and would rather stick pins in our eyes than give her credit, perhaps all of her gawking around on Dancing With The Stars did some good.

Dr Who fans told by BBC: put your knitting needles away -- or else

Filed under: Style in the News

Knitters. Not a group of people one would traditionally associate with law-breaking hooligans, but it seems the BBC thinks differently.

You see, although the British TV company is grateful for the army of fans its top-rated sci-fi show Dr Who has spawned since it hit our screens (for the second time) in 2005, it's less happy that some of those fans have chosen to... knit their favorite characters.

The cheek! Imagine people actually using their creative self-expression in ways they choose, in a democratic society! Surely something can be done to stop them?

Blood, sweat, and t-shirts

Filed under: Style in the News

We've all seen Chris Hansen expose perverts, thieves, and con men on Dateline. And since Tyra Banks' addictive model show hit the air, we all can say we know a little something about the modeling industry i.e., never go on America's Next Top Model if you want to have a chance at a legitimate career.

Deck shoes by Billionaire Boys Club

Filed under: Accessories, Style in the News, Clothing, Shoes, Men

The Billionaire Boys Club has released some new footwear, the Dollars and Diamonds Boat Shoe. Remember how Richie Rich had a dog named Dollar that had dollar signs ($) all over him? These shoes are like that, but in better colors and with diamonds. That's called taking it up a notch.

Whatever happened to Richie Rich? That poor little rich boy would scoop up a pair of these in a heartbeat.

Oh, he got "a conservative haircut"

Filed under: Style in the News, Hair Care

A few weeks ago, Jonathon told us about the curious relationship between hemlines and markets. But I'm here to tell you, that isn't the only surprising intersection between fashion and economics. Apparently, economists have been known to use the phrase "a conservative haircut" to refer to loan collateral.

All of this is to say that you should be thankful that your stylist doesn't talk about "shrinking markets" or "trade deficients" when referring to your hairline.

Do urban birds rap?

Filed under: Events: On the Scene

We all know that city life and city people are very different from country life and country people. But would you believe that birds are also affected by the urban/suburban divide?

Dutch researchers have recently discovered that urban birds have a different song pattern than their rural counterparts. Cities birds tend to have short fast songs, versus the slower, longer melodies of their country cousins. Study leaders said urban birds had developed shorter, more varied, higher-pitched sounds so that they can be heard above trains, airplanes and road traffic. Country birds, on the other hand, have little environmental noise to compete with so their songs tend to softer and more melodic.

Pretty cool isn't it?

Kate and Sienna are no Vivien

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

For anyone out there who is a little sick of the Brit-pixie duo, Sienna Miller and Kate Moss, I have good news. While Miller/Moss star is on the rise, a recent poll revealed that it hasn't quite touched that of the lovely Vivien Leigh. BBC News' Weekend Magazine reported that when asked, the majority of those surveyed cited Vivien Leigh as the most beautiful British woman of all time. Leigh, who many will know from her famous role as Southern Belle, Scarlett O'Hara in the epic film Gone with the Wind, was known for her jet black hair and vivid green eyes.

What do you think -- are Kate and Sienna no Vivien? And, "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn" is not an acceptable answer!

The BBC goes punk

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

If you think the word "punk" has anything to do with Ashton Kutcher, listen up.

An urban youth movement that was one part attitude, one part music and three parts style, punk is what the 1970s gave us (well, okay, punk and Watergate ... and the OPEC Crisis. Whatever.) Thirty years after punk hit hard in New York and London, the BBC is running a three part series on its BBC World Service "Close Up" program chronicling what punk was.

Iggy Pop, the Sex Pistols, the Ramones, CBGB, mohawks, nose rings: that's "punk." That annoying guy with the crooked hat who plays tricks on people to the adulation of MTV? That's "a punk."
