Miss Universe Japan - We Bow to You!

Filed under: Style in the News

Okay, beauty pageants haven't exactly been the pinnacle of high fashion (despite some attempts at updating the events). However, the Miss Universe Japan competition gives us hope -- how is it that those Japanese girls are always so darn stylish?

Rather than the skimpy, sparkly outfits we've gotten used to seeing in the Miss USA competition, Miss Japan contestants were decked out in retro, 40s-inspired swimsuits and complementary hats -- so chic and stylish, making it more like a music video or photo shoot than a traditional pageant.

We can't say that we're surprised -- we're often drawn to Japanese trends well before they show up here in the States. But we're definitely intrigued. Will we see similar costuming for the Miss Universe pageant?

Beauty pageant for nuns

(Nuns: hot or not? Click the photo to find out!)

Ever seen a really hot nun? Neither have we. In fact, it feels a little immoral (and just...icky) to even imagine a sexy sister stunning visitors at her local convent -- but one Italian priest feels differently.

Heather Mills gets booed at Miss USA pageant

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

Here in America, we love us some beauty pageants, and Miss USA is no exception. The gossip, spills, and thrills make the ridiculous contest a must see for all fiends of pop culture. But apparently, Heather Mills has a different impression of why Americans tune in to watch the pageant -- to see her gold-digging celebrity face.

It's hard to imagine why she has such a high opinion of her popularity here in the States, when the New York Post is reporting that the audience "booed and hissed when Mills was announced as a judge for the show." Still, somehow she's found a way to convince herself that America loves her. Reportedly, her enormous ego prompted her to launch an all-out attack on the show's producers to fatten up her contract.

Pepper spray almost sabotages beauty pageant winner

Filed under: Style in the News, Cosmetics

Someone really wanted to be Miss Puerto Rico. Badly.

So badly, in fact, that she was willing to sabotage the front-runner, Ingrid Marie Rivera, by dousing her clothing and make-up in pepper spray -- a move that forced the contestant to ice down her face and body after she broke out in hives. Fortunately, Rivera wasn't seriously hurt, and eventually won the contest anyway -- albeit amidst declarations from organizers that they would find and punish the perpetrator of this "vile act."

I always figured this kind of thing was going on backstage at beauty pageants -- behind the Vaseline-coated teeth, absurdly perky demeanors, and pleas for maps for underpriveledged Americans. Now there's proof.

Beauty queens play dirty.

Miss Mexico won't wear violent dress for Miss Universe pageant

Filed under: Events: On the Scene, Clothing, Dresses

Of all the reasons to scrap a pageant dress, Miss Mexico ditched her outfit for the Miss Universe competition because it was too violent.

Designers were trying to create something that represented the nation's culture and history, but apparently they're a little cynical. They made a dress accented by sketches of hangings, coupled with a belt made of bullets.

Understandably, the Mexican people were outraged.

However, even though the dress was in a poor taste, it was technically accurate, and indeed a part of Mexico's history. It showed scenes from the 1926-29 Cristero war, in which Roman Catholic rebels rose up against the country's secular government -- a conflict which resulted in tens of thousands of casualties.

But to put it in perspective, one columnist wrote: "It would be like Miss USA wearing a dress showing images of the Ku Klux Klan in the Deep South, with their hoods, their burning crosses and beer cans."

Wow. Just when you thought pageants couldn't get any more ridiculous.

Bulgarian mother of three crowned Super Model of the World

Filed under: Runway Trends, Style in the News

Just when you think that all of the cobwebs are out of the closet, you find out that a Bulgarian mother of three was just crowned Super Model of the World.

Super Model of the World?

Yes, apparently, there is such a contest.

From what I can tell (details are murky), mother of three, Desislava Grubleva, 30, is also Miss United Nations 2007. This is the first time a Bulgarian has even entered the contest, which is slightly ironic because this is first time anyone has even heard of the Miss United Nations competition.

Incidentally, I'm just a little curious about the prizes that go along with being Miss United Nations. Do you get a date with Boutros Boutros-Ghali? Does it entitle you to a kiss from Secretary General Kofi Annan? Do you get a pale blue U.N. peace keeping force helmet instead of a crown?

God, I hope so.
