L'Oreal Found Guilty of Racial Discrimination

Filed under: Style in the News

As reported by the UK Times Online, L'Oréal has been found guilty of racial discrimination by France's highest court, La Cour de Cassation. Some specific claims against the cosmetic giant:

  • Recruiting "BBR" staff (bleu, blanc, rouge--the colors of the French flag), a known term for those with purely French heritage
  • Faxing a memo that all Garnier hostesses should be 18-22, wear size 38-42, and be "BBR"
  • Candidates for employment at the L'Oréal agency were said to be 38.7% minorities, but only 4.65% of those hired represented minority backgrounds.
  • Employees said they were told to favor a white staff

Though company reps claimed that the requests were meant to source applicants who could speak French fluently and represent the brand eloquently, the court found that L'Oréal's racial favoritism was in violation of employment laws.

The company met its first sign of trouble last summer when it was accused of lightening Beyoncé's skin in ads she appeared in for various L'Oréal products.

Ali Larter is "Obsessed"

Filed under: Clothing, Celebrities with Style, Interviews

One look at the trailers for the new movie "Obsessed," starring Ali Larter as an office siren turned psycho stalker, and it's pretty clear the title is accurate. But the real-life Larter also was obsessed in the best kind of way -- she wanted her character's look to be absolutely perfect, right down to her underwear, says costume designer Maya Lieberman.

In one of the movie's hotter scenes, Larter's Lisa Sheridan surprises the object of her desire, played by Idris Elba, with the old nothing-but-silk-and-lace under the coat trick. Lieberman says Larter came up with the idea for the vintage inspired ensemble herself.

"The lingerie was 100% Ali's idea," Lieberman said. "She wanted to avoid anything stripper inspired because she felt strongly that her character would pick something high fashion and sophisticated."

Lieberman used two pieces from different sets and dyed them to match.

The final look? Classy, sexy and surprisingly demure. A nice change, no doubt, for an actress who first made headlines wearing nothing but a whipped cream bikini in 1999's "Varsity Blues."

Feeling fashion obsessed yourself? Head over to BlackVoices to enter their "Obsessed" sweepstakes. Grand prize is a a $1,375 Hermes "Garden Party" tote and a $1,000 spa package. Can you get any more obsession worthy?

And after the jump, more on how Lieberman created Larter's look and that of Beyoncé Knowles, who plays the woman wronged.

Odd at the Oscars

Filed under: Events: On the Scene, Celebrities with Style, Celebrity Fashion Mistakes, Red Carpet Trends

The Oscars never fails to entertain and delight us, and there are always a few things that stick out to us on the red carpet as a little odd. This year, we did double takes when we saw beautiful Natalie Portman's breasts staring at us and the lovely Melissa George in her underwear. Did Matthew Broderick get guylights? And what do Mickey Rourke and Ellen Degeneres have in common? Have a look through our gallery to see.

Odd at the Oscars

    Matthew Broderick
Matthew, honey, we know you expected all eyes to be on SJP's voluptuous curves, but dude -- ditch the "guylights" and give them to Hannah Montana (whose dress was great, but whose hair was surprisingly lackluster).

    Phillip Seymour Hoffman
We know it wasn't cold there (shoot, Jennifer Aniston wasn't even niptacular), so why was he wearing a hat? We're assuming he went in for guylights with Matthew Broderick and was less thrilled with the results.

    Freida Pinto
We know you're new to the red carpet, but here's the thing. Nancy Kerrigan called, and she wants her skating costume back. Sorry.

    Natalie Portman
Well, she might not follow you around the room (or maybe she does, what do we know?), but the magic eyes on her breasts do. Yowza.

    Amy Adams
Statement necklaces are huge, but this one is huge enough to pull double duty as a bib. And just in case it missed anything, the dress came with a handy dandy tucked in napkin. You know, because actresses always eat at these things, right?

    Heidi Klum
She missed her workout that morning, but got one in by wearing 60 pounds of bracelets on her arm. Hey, when you're a wife, mother, supermodel, TV host, and entrepreneur, you have to multitask!

    Melissa George
She loved her underwear so much, she decided not to wear the dress. We've all thought about doing this, and now we're glad we didn't.

    Mickey Rourke
We're animal lovers here, for sure, but Mickey pulls a total Ellen with his puppy love pendant. Oh, who are we kidding? We just about teared up with him. Or for him. Not sure which.

    Beyonce
Beyonce Knowles gives Scarlett O'Hara a run for her money in this curtain-esque print, complete with valance ruffle. But even running wouldn't make Scarlett this bootylicious!

While the couple has done a great job keeping first their relationship and then their marriage under wraps and totally off limits to the press, they are flashy about one thing -- their jewelry. I want that! Kelly Rowland in Dolce & Gabbana

Filed under: Clothing, Shoes, Jeans, Celebrities with Style, Get the Look

Where has Kelly Rowland been all of our lives? We have missed you the past few years! Her little pose, smile, and hair do -- pure cuteness.

We are also completely bananas for Kelly's sweet Dolce & Gabbana secretary top which the songbird paired with skinny jeans and lace up oxfords. Though the look might be a little too fall for August, nonetheless we are truly into her plaid top and oxford heels – two huge trends for next season.

Tip of the day: Best drugstore mascaras

Filed under: Cosmetics, Celebrities with Style, Style Tip of the Day

Over the last decade that we've been wearing makeup (yeah we had one of those dad's that forbid it until we were 16... laaaaame), we have probably tested every single mascara available at our local drugstore – no kidding. We had a great time testing over the years, particularly during a brief period of CVS employment that was strictly for the cosmetic discount. It was basically a crazed 2 month makeup rampage... ahhh the memories.

So after all of this time, we are pleased to share our findings with you.

Let Beyoncé design your prom dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Celebrities with Style

Beyoncé Knowles is one elegant lady, so I was a little surprised when House of Deréon -- the line she created with her mother Tina -- was all about denim and sportswear. But now the ultra-fabulous diva is a creator clothes that seem more in keeping with her personal sense of style. She's even re-launching her fashion label with a focus on more formal occasions -- like prom, for instance.

Apparently, the inspiration for the new direction came from Tina, who says: "Girls literally stop me on the street and ask me to personally make them a prom dress." Obviously, she couldn't accommodate all those random strangers, but this new move should give them a little something to look forward to come prom season.

Look out for the dresses this January in high-end stores like Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdale's. They wholesale for $120 to $300, so you can expect to spend a little on your dazzling new threads -- but to have a dress hand-picked by Tina and Beyoncé, it's probably worth it.

StyleFoul: Beyoncé is half knight, half robot

Filed under: Celebrities with Style, Celebrity Fashion Mistakes

Beyoncé seems to be going through some sort of bizarre identity crisis. Not only is her lower body attempting to define itself a separate entity by experimenting with grandma legs, but at last week's BET Awards, B shamelessly flaunted her new robo-knight ways. The picture on the left is of Beyoncé on the red carpet wearing a fairly normal metallic dress with a not-so-normal metal belt, stripped straight from one of King Arthur's buddies. To the right is a photo of Beyoncé later in the evening, performing one of her songs as a half-naked C-3PO.

Actually, I normally wouldn't have paid much mind to Beyoncé's bizarre onstage get-up because, after all, performances often require rather dramatic make-up and costume. However, I was stunned to see that those tights weren't fashioned by Beyoncé's mother, like most of her costumes, but came off the runway! Shame on Balenciaga for luring Beyoncé to the dark side ... and by "dark," I mean "absurdly shiny."

Beyonce is Armani's newest face

Filed under: Style in the News, Fragrance, Celebrities with Style

Beyoncé Knowles already wears a lot of Armani and now she'll be wearing his scent too. Beyoncé, who was once the inspiration for Tommy Hilfiger's True Star fragrance will now be the face and voice of Giorgio Armani's next women's fragrance, Emporio Armani Diamonds. The scent will come out this fall and Beyoncé will sing a song for the perfume in addition to appearing in print and TV ads. No word yet on what the scent will smell like.

Dress doesn't fit? Try the "cleanse"

Filed under: Holiday Style, Style in the News, Celebrities with Style, Steals and Deals

Living in a culture obsessed with thin, it can only be expected that hundreds - nay, thousands of weight loss products will be showcased by the media in a single calendar year. South Beach, Hydroxycut, Atkins, TRIMSPA, The Zone - we've heard them all, and while some of these programs stick around with some semblance of longevity, most are just a flash in the pan.

I think most of us know now that weight loss doesn't come in pill form. Exercise gurus and nutritionists have drilled the mantra "eat right, exercise at least 3 times per week, and you'll be fine" into our heads enough to know that we are going to have to work a little for the weight to drop off and stay off.

However, an old diet tactic is making new rounds. It cleverly combines work ethic with immediate gratification, appealing to just about any American consumer interested in dropping a couple of pounds. The diet is called the "Master Cleanse", and involves surviving for 10 days on a mixture of lemon juice, cayenne pepper, maple syrup, and water. And that's all.

Sound tough? It is. But it works, and the diet has many devotees, including celebrities such as Beyoncé Knowles and Denzel Washington. Joy Bauer, a New York City based nutritionist, estimates that if performed correctly, the cleanse will provide about 650 calories per day, 950 calories less than the minimum recommended for a woman trying to maintain her weight. "Of course you're going to lose weight," Bauer said. "You're starving yourself." Cleanse supporters quell their critics by citing the program's many benefits, including supposed help for ulcers and other internal ailments and the purging of impurities and toxins like pesticides and food additives.

So what do you think? Is the "Cleanse" just organized starvation, or is it the anecdote to our immediate gratification-style weight loss obsession?
