Makeover at Bobbi Brown

Filed under: Cosmetics, Skin Care, Get the Look, Beauty Tips

Continuing our quest to bring you the very best makeup and skincare finds, I once again braved the department store makeup counters (this time at Bloomingdale's) to find out what's going on at Bobbi Brown.

At right is the "After" picture; that's me all made-up by adorable Bobbi Brown Beauty Advisor Houston Puryear. She's from Austin.

Read on for the hideous "Before" picture, and for information on how to get the look.

Lauren Conrad's clothing line dying a slow death at racks

Filed under: Style in the News

(Click the photo to see Lauren's failing line -- would you buy it?)

After presenting at LA Fashion Week with much fanfare and receiving an award from US Weekly for creating the most fashionable celebrity clothing line this year, The Hills' Lauren Conrad has found herself in a veritable quandary: no one wants to buy her pieces anymore.

Agh...the outrage!

It turns out that her little appearance at Bloomingdale's a couple of weeks, you know, the one that made the department store's vice chairman proclaim that LC's collection was "the best-selling celebrity line [they had]," well, didn't do much to help her brand's slagging sales.

Apparently, the racks with Lauren's designs are totally overstuffed because no one wants to buy anything. At all. Not even when stores like Kitson offer a buy-one-get-one free deal are people willing jump on those jersey dresses. But really, this is suppose to be a surprise to whom?

Lauren Conrad has #1 celebrity line

MTV must be pretty excited. Their number one cash cow, reality star, Lauren Conrad, now has a number one selling clothing line as well. Despite previous reviews in the fashion industry that the pieces are overly simplistic and too high priced, she's selling out!

WeSC at Blooomingdale's

Filed under: Accessories, Vintage and Retro

WeAretheSuperlativeConspiracy
(WeSC, say: "We", "S", "C") held a launch event at Bloomingdale's this week and gave away 500 limited edition headphones, shown above. The headphone collection features retro 70's styles with lightweight materials, funky color palettes and respectable sound quality.

It's only part of WeSC's full collections for men and women which include denim, rtw separates, outerwear and accessories. Usually we say trend is a thing to avoid. But retro headphone trend? Bring it on.

Aviator sunglasses + men = classically cool

Filed under: Accessories, Men, Must Haves

Guys don't really have a myriad of accessories to obsess over. Most don't wear much--if any--jewelry, or carry a bag, or put things in their hair, or have much use for scarves. It's all the more reason that a man's choice of sunglasses carries a lot of weight.

The never-fail option is classic aviators, which were first developed by Ray-Ban way back in 1937. According to Wikipedia, aviators are defined by their "dark, often reflective lenses having an area two or three times the area of the eye socket, and metal frames with wire temples which hook behind the ears."

Of course, most of us simply know them when we see them. Here are some of our favorite, modern takes on the eternally cool aviator sunglasses.

Tip of the day: Harajuku Lovers window

Filed under: Style Tip of the Day

Gwen Stefani has captured her pioneering look for her clothing lines L.A.M.B. and Harajuku Lovers. Yes, one of the few celebrity clothing lines that actually matters. This week, window shoppers, Stefani lovers, and New Yorker's (or all of the above) will be happy to know that Stefani's Harajuku Girls will be in the windows of Bloomingdale's on Lexington Avenue Thursday and Friday.

Although the new mom won't be attending, the Girls will be promoting the latest looks from the line and will also be singing handbags in the flagship store as well as the SoHo Bloomie's.

As for the clothes? We guarantee that "This sh*t is bananas! B-A-N-A-N-A-S!"

PZI Jeans for the real curvy ladies might have some competition from JBrand Blue Line

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Jeans

It's about time they made some jeans for ladies with contours. We've spent hours tugging at jeans that are too loose in the waist and too tight in the hips. It's uncomfortable, and even worse, it looks bad.

Last week super trendy J Brand jeans announced a new line called Blue Line that will target "curvy" women. Forgive us if we doubt their definition of "curvy" although we applaud the effort.

They might want to look to their curvy competition, PZI Jeans. PZI is all about fitting curves. Their excellent sizing chart even acknowledges the totally common but underserved small waist-to-hip ratio, aka the reason why we all walk around with gaping waistbands. Or we did until PZI came along. From the pictures on the site, you can tell that these are jeans that will fit you like a grown up, without low-riding or muffin topping.

Shoes of the Day: "Big Brown Bag" Rainboots

bloomingdales rain bootsWe know that rubber rain boots are were all the rage, and boots in bold, bright colors or with wild prints in particular. Bright red? Yep. Purple plaid? Sure. Even little koi fish? Why not?

But Bloomingdale's has gone a little crazy with their rubber rain boots printed with their signature "big brown bag." The miniature bags are printed on a light background, there's a lug sole, and a buckle to adjust the calf-width.

If you love Bloomingdale's the way it seems Bloomingdale's loves Bloomingdale's, the rainboots are available online for $60.

Interactive mirrors lets you try on without taking off

interactive mirror
Yeah, you know what it's like to go shopping for new clothes. Much ado, and you often walk away with nothing, right? You have to make sure you wear shoes that are comfortable, clothes that are easy to slip on and off, and you have to look halfway decent with hair and makeup otherwise everything, no matter what, will look bad on you. And when you actually get to the store, what a pain to keep changing in and out of clothes.

Thanks to new technology, clothes shopping got a little bit easier. In the Nanette Lepore deaprtment at Bloomingdale's in New York City, they are testing interactive mirrors that allow customers to "try on" clothes without having to actually go into a fitting room. A screen projects images of clothes on the shopper who can see what it looks like. The interactive part comes in when the image is sent to a website where the shopper's friends can see and make comments.

While some may think that this technology is useless, if it actually works, I would love it. I often go shopping on a whim (which means alone), and when I can't decide, end up taking pictures of myself with a cameraphone and sending it to my sisters asking for their advice.
