Ever since Kelly Clarkson hit the scene on American Idol, we've been following her hairstyles.

Okay so first Katie, then Gwyneth, then Liz, next Hayden and now Eva. Obviously bobs are back in business.

If you want to get gully and go for it, make sure that you know some secrets to ensure your bob is bangin, not bland.

Most women have learned certain beauty tricks that keep them from looking older than they are (or looking their age, as the case may be). In Hollywood, youthful looks seem to be the primary goal of many actresses, so naturally one would imagine that it's the one place where women would make sure to find a fresh, age-appropriate 'do.

However, that's not always the case.

Posh Spice, aka Victoria Beckham, came to the U.S. and started the short hair trend. Since then, anyone who's anyone has been seen with the bob, most notably Katie Holmes. But, aside from the big names, I think it's only fair that we talk about some of the lower profile ladies who have also chopped it all off in the name of fashion. Our most recent victim is Norah Jones.

We here at Styledash like a good bob. Naomi Campbell, Anna Wintour, Rachel Alexander and yes, even Posh Spice have been known to successfully rock the deceptively simple classic haircut.

But bobs, like high heels and red lipstick, don't work on everyone.

Feast your eyes on exhibit A: Hilary Duff's black bob wig from her latest perfume commercial.

The picture might be a little grainy, but where this hair style goes wrong on Hilary still seems clear. The first problem is the color. Pale girls don't look right with black hair. Chestnut or Espresso, absolutely. But jet or licorice? No.

The second problem is that the bob is too short. Trust me, no one has worn a bob that cropped since 1922. To put that in perspective, in 1922 we still thought cigarettes were good for your health.

My last and final beef is perhaps over something that Hilary has little control over: her lack of neck. Short hair on a short neck is not a good idea. Too much of one proportion blows it.

Singer Rihanna has been showcasing her new hairdo at several recent awards shows and, I must say, I approve. I dare not even attempt to count the number of celebrities that have attempted and failed to wear straight-cut bangs (see: Mena Suvari earlier this year), so congratulations are in order for Rihanna. She has a very high forehead, which could have been problematic if she had cut her bangs too short. But leaving them to just sweep slightly above the lashes is absolutely perfect, because it emphasizes those beautiful eyes of hers.

If you're looking to emulate Rihanna's new cut, remember that it takes a lot of upkeep to look good. You'll have to constantly make sure that the length of the bangs is always uniform, because that clean line is essential.
