Spring '09 - Pretty in Peach

Filed under: Cosmetics, Product Reviews, Beauty Tips

For those of you who long to be on-trend but just can't stomach the thought of rocking up to the office wearing bright pink lipstick or neon polish, fear not: I have something for you -- peach.

Soft, pretty peach is having quite a moment. More exciting than neutrals, but less in-yo'-face than this season's brights, peach makeup has been popping up everywhere that matters.

Fall 2009 Fashion Week: Backstage Beauty at J. Mendel

Filed under: Cosmetics, Fashion Week, Beauty Tips, Hair Cut and Style

THE SHOW: J. Mendel
MAKEUP: Tanya Cropsey for Bobbi Brown
HAIR: Odile Gilbert for Barex Italiana
BEAUTY SNAPSHOT: Chic, elegant and modern

THE SCOOP: "There are tons of statement pieces in J. Mendel's Fall 2009 collection," said makeup artist Tanya Cropsey. "From simple silhouettes to luxe furs, it's absolutely jaw-dropping." Cropsey wanted to makeup to act as a backdrop to the clothing, subtly defining the eye and lips in matte shades instead of highlighting one feature. The eyes, which Cropsey described as "the modern smoky eye" diffused matte, dark gray shadow from the lash line to the crease, with no mascara or liner. Pouts were velvety red and matte to complement the eyes. The hair was an equal mixture of elegance and modernity, a slicked back splice of chignon and modified ponytail. Hair stylist Odile Gilbert called it "chic elegant and modern - from the front, the sides and the back it look like different styles."

GET THE LOOK - MAKEUP: Bobbi Brown Eye Shadow in Caviar, Steel and White, Bobbi Brown Lip Color in Red.

GET THE LOOK- HAIR: Gilber worked Barex Italiana Gum Gum through the hair, then gave it a deep side part and round it back like you're making a high chignon, but secure it as a ponytail instead. Gilbert then looped a black string in the hair near the nape of the neck and used it to secure the bottom of the ponytail. She finished the look with a spritz of Barex Italiana Gloss Hair Spray, to get the hair extra smooth and shiny.

Makeover at Bobbi Brown

Filed under: Cosmetics, Skin Care, Get the Look, Beauty Tips

Continuing our quest to bring you the very best makeup and skincare finds, I once again braved the department store makeup counters (this time at Bloomingdale's) to find out what's going on at Bobbi Brown.

At right is the "After" picture; that's me all made-up by adorable Bobbi Brown Beauty Advisor Houston Puryear. She's from Austin.

Read on for the hideous "Before" picture, and for information on how to get the look.

Beauty products that they DON'T recommend

Filed under: Hair Care, Cosmetics, Skin Care

bad beauty productsMost of the time, we find ourselves asking one another what we use for wash our faces, moisturize, get ride of zits, erase fine lines. Very rarely do we ask the opposite question, "What do you not use?" Why would we? We don't need to know about something we'd never buy and try. Still, TotalBeauty put together a list of the 12 beauty products that earned the lowest ratings from their editors. I guess the best way to use this information is to watch out:

See which products you should avoid:

  • Smashbox Lip Enhancing Gloss
  • Revlon Tourmaline Ionic 1875 Watt Hairdryer
  • Redken All Soft Gold Glimmer Perfecting Shine Treatment
  • Murad Firm and Tone Serum
  • NARS Body Glow
  • Bobbi Brown Everything Mascara
  • Skyn Iceland Arctic Face Mist
  • Maybelline New York Define-a-Lash Mascara
  • Lush Jungle Conditioner
  • Sally Hansen Smooth Glow Stubble Reducing Moisturizer
  • John Frieda Frizz-Ease Straight Answer Spray

Bobbi Brown's Surf and Sand eye palette

Blue is a controversial eyeshadow color. In the 80s, it was huge. In the 90s, it was hated. So how do we feel about it now in the 00s? Well, if it's anything like the blues in Bobbi Brown's Surf and Sand eye palette, we probably say, "Bring it on!"

Bobbi's (if I may call her by her first name) limited-edition summertime eye palette includes 10 ultra-sheer pigments that can be used in infinite configurations. Used alone or together, each shimmery color puts a modern spin on beige, aqua and pale pink shadows. The dreamy collection is said to work well on a variety of complexions and age ranges.

At the moment, the eye palette is somewhat difficult to come by -- Bobbi's website is actually out of stock until mid-May -- but if you have access to her makeup at a nearby department store, a few of the coveted palettes might still be up for grabs.

Bobbi Brown's violet face for spring

Last time I checked out Bobbi Brown cosmetics, she was focused on a chocolate-colored color scheme. That's perfect for fall, but for spring she's all about the violet face, a pale purple flush for lips, eyes and cheeks. Her violet palette has everything you need to create the very girly, very springtime look and sells for $50 or if you just want update your look with one item, the Ultra Violet Shimmer Wash Eye Shadow sells for $19. It looks a bit garish in the container but it is actually soft and delicate on the face.

An eyeshadow worth coveting

Over the years, I've found that one of the most flattering shades women can use on their lids is a pale rose or pink. I recommend it to women of all ages, from my 56-year-old mother to my 25-year-old girlfriends. Sure, it sounds a little counterintuitive -- and it's probably not the best look if you are trying to conceal puffy, tired eyes. And yet, somehow pinkish eyeshadow adds a beautifully youthful glow to everyone's face.

When I noticed that Chanel's fall make-up line featured an eyeshadow called Pink Lamé, I was sold. The multi-tonal shadow is exactly what you would expect from a luxury cosmetics line: luminescence, sophistication and a downright perfect tone. And you've got my makeup lovin' word on it -- this shade will look great on you. Price: $40.
