Michelle Obama Inauguration Predictions

If expectations are high for Barack Obama, they're no less soaring for his wife -- at least in a sartorial sense. After two decades of Bush and Clinton women -- for whom style was not a sixth sense -- the inarguably fashionable and seemingly fearless Michelle Obama has trend-watchers in a frenzy. Tall and taut, with the broad shoulders and self-confidence to carry off whatever she wants, Obama has spent the past 21 months being compared to Jacqueline Kennedy. And, so far, Obama has acquitted herself well, showing off recession-friendly dresses from White House/ Black Market and pricey styles from edgy designers like Isabel Toledo, who she wore (left) last spring to a fundraiser with fashion industry heavyweights. What will she favor for the White House? StyleList takes a look at her past -- and offers some predictions for the future. And for those who think clothes don't matter, remember the words of JFK as he introduced his wildly popular wife at a 1961 State Dinner at Charles de Gaulle's presidential palace. "I am the man," Kennedy said, "who accompanied Jacqueline Kennedy to Paris."

    Marcel Thomas, FilmMagic.com

She hasn't even gotten to the White House, but Michelle Obama has already done more than any fashion mag to make Thakoon a household name. The Thai-born designer's dresses were perfect for several major moments on the campaign trail, including (at left) the final night of the Democratic National Convention. At right, the rose-colored silk dress as it appeared on Thakoon's runway. Mrs. Obama seems to have made no changes to it -- except the addition of three her trademark pins to the neckline. (And for those who can't afford Thakoon's four-figure price tags, the designer debuts a more recession-friendly collection at Target in December.)

No, we don't expect the new First Lady to parade her abs at the Easter egg roll. But with just a few strategically placed swaths of fabric, this delicate floral sheath by Thakoon could meet the needs of the most demanding East Wing schedule.

Back in 1982, when Nancy Reagan wore rhinestone-trimmed knickers to a dinner at the American Embassy in Paris, she was ridiculed across two continents. So it's no surprise that Michelle Obama decided to keep her thighs safely away from the runway version of Moschino's flowered silk shorts (right). What's a First Lady-wannabe to do? Moschino took the same gray-and-purple fabric and used it to bare Mrs. O's knee's in a more Donna Reed way -- a soft shirtwaist that made her look both comfortable and camera-ready for the debut of the Obama-Biden ticket in Springfield, Ill. last summer. Surely, Nancy would have approved.

    Karl Prouse/Catwalking/Getty Images

This purple silk coat and carnival-striped dress from Moschino's spring collection strikes the perfect balance between the White House need to look sophisticated and Mrs. Obama's penchant to shake-it-up.

If fashion tells a story, Michelle Obama's fiery red confetti-printed dress conveyed every bit of her Election Night euphoria. True, the Narciso Rodriguez sheath, modified from the runway version at right, earned as many barbs as raves -- "Maybe it looked really awesome up close?" one fashion wag asked. But you won't find a trace of disappointment on Obama's face, which glowed as brightly as her $10,275 Loree Rodkin diamond earrings.

Narcisco Rodriguez's edgy black-and-white dress would be techy enough for the You Tube generation and graphic enough for those Dinosaur Age readers of print media.

    Chris Moore/Catwalking/Getty Images

Tall and toned, Mrs. Obama isn't afraid to experiment. She plays with color (usually favoring brights) and shape (usually body-hugging) -- and, just when you think you've figured out her fashion maxims, she veers in another direction. The cantaloupe-colored Moschino dress that she wore to her husband's acceptance of the Harold Washington Award this fall was a softer color and silhouette than her typical fare.

    Chris Moore/Catwalking/Getty Images

Hillary Clinton made front-page news in 1993, when she co-hosted the Governors' Dinner at the White House in Donna Karan's "cold-shoulder" dress, a dramatic long-sleeved black sheath with -- surpise! -- the shoulders cut out. We're not sure the world is ready for a First Lady in a cut-out torso, but with a bit of fabric in all the right places, Narciso Rodriguez's 'bondage" gown would be a fierce addition to Mrs. Obama's don't-mess-with-me repertoire.

    Chris Moore/Catwalking/Getty Images

Peter Soronen's fashions are fun, flirty, and fit for a woman confident enough to show off her curves. Small wonder he's earned red-carpet time from the likes of Sarah Jessica Parker, Jennifer Hudson and Tina Fey. He's also added Michelle Obama to his roster. At left, her white delicately-patterned dress is adapted from Soronen's houndstooth check sheath.

Stylish summer reads

Being the voracious readers that we are, we're always checking out reading lists (and no, we aren't in Oprah's book club, even though she does have some good picks now and again). That being said, we were quite thrilled with Style.com's summer reading list -- the list itself is based on fashion, although the books aren't actually about fashion.

(Because you know, if it has to do with fashion at all, it's work for us, so we totally give ourselves a pass to take any of these out to the pool and read for a couple of hours. We're working.)

Haute Holiday Gift Guide: Fashionable Books

Reading is Fashionable
Nothing says winter like getting into your pajamas, sipping a cup of hot chocolate and curling up with a good book. Now fashion books are hotter than ever and there is a surplus of great reads out there. This gift list of books is perfect for you and the fashion fans on your holiday shopping list.

Die hard fashionista:
Try titles like Stylists, The Tom Ford Book, and the Dolce & Gabbana Fashion Album. These books are all beautifully illustrated and will be most appreciated by girls who read W and Vogue religiously.

Fun and fashionable girls: These girls love clothes but they aren't as hardcore as the die-hards mentioned above. For these girls go with titles like The Devil Wears Prada, Miss Understanding, 101 Things to Buy Before you Die, Smart Girls Like Me, and The Little Black Book of Style.

Love of learning fashionistas: These books are for the girls that love to study fashion inside and out: 9 Heads, Vintage Fashion, The End of Fashion, and The Little Dictionary of Fashion.

Reading is Fashionable: Stylists The Interpreters of Fashion

Stylist The Interpreters of Fashion
Stylists: The Interpreters of Fashion is by far the most gorgeous fashion book I have read in a long time. This oversized coffee table book introduces you to perhaps the most influential individuals in the fashion industry, the stylists.

It may be surprising to some, but stylists do much more than put together pretty outfits. Stylists often cast the models, hire hair-and-makeup professionals, assist the designers, and help build photo shoots.

This book is beautifully illustrated with loads of glossy photographs displaying the stylists' best work. My favorite bio and photo spread was about stylist Andrea Lieberman who has styled Gwen Stefani, Jennifer Lopez (she put her in her famous plunging Grammy gown), and many more of music's finest.

Stylists: The Interpreters of Fashion
retails at $75.00
and is worth every penny but if you head to Amazon.com you can score it for much cheaper. Happy reading.

Reading is Fashionable: Vintage Fashion

Filed under: Style in the News, Vintage and Retro, Books

vintage fashion bookWearing vintage fashion is as close to getting into a time machine as anyone will ever get. While others may think it totally creepy to wear something that someone else wore or even died in, to me they are pieces that tell a story without speaking a word. That 1940s bolero jacket could have gone on quite the adventure; it could have had an incredible emotional ride with its original owner. Vintage fashion is fashion at its finest.

Reading Vintage Fashion was like reading a textbook --except it was much more exciting. This book was informative and brought fashion back to its roots. It reminded me how our favorite fashions that we never gave a second thought to were brought on by much more than good looks. The nipped waists of the 1940s were brought on by the poor economy due to the war. Vogue declared this era "Il faut 'skimp' pour etre chic"- you must skimp to be chic.

This book is a must have for vintage fashion lovers
. It not only covers each decade in detail, it also gives a Key Looks feature that gives a quick glance at color stories, shapes, and style of that particular decade. My favorite era was the 1960s with its great hosiery, boots, shift dresses, and psychedelic fashions.

How to Eat Like a Hot Chick

how to eat like a hot chickWhenever I feel less than hot, I always grab my purse and head out to the mall because a new pair of shoes or a bag always seems to do the trick. Well, it looks like I can save myself some money because the key to being a "hot chick" can't be found at the mall.

The book How to Eat Like a Hot Chick teaches you how to look your best through what you put in your mouth. This book isn't your typical diet book; it's much more fun than that. The tone of book is like that of you and your girlfriends talking to one another. At one point in the book, I swore I wrote the darned thing.

There is nothing in this book the average girl can't handle because the rules are so basic. Did you overindulge with a big breakfast? Eat a pound of spinach for dinner to make up (or down, rather) for it. Going out for cocktails? Skip those sugary margaritas things and go for a 70 calories vodka and soda.

The book is light, funny and you can read it a matter of hours.

Smart Girls Like Me is a fashionable read

Filed under: Style in the News, Books

Smart Girls Like Me It's always nice to see a fellow fashion blogger take that giant leap from the computer screen to actual paper. Diane Vadino, who writes for the one of my favorite blogs BunnyShop.org, has just put out her first novel called Smart Girls Like Me.

Smart Girls Like Me is a story about Betsey Nilssen, a 24-year-old assistant editor of a dot-com fashion magazine, who is convinced the world is going to end on January 1, 2000. When Betsey isn't stocking up on freeze dried foods for the "end of the world" she is busy planning her best friend's wedding and crushing on a hot co-worker in her office. As Betsey counts down to the New Year she can't help but feel lonely as her best friend is getting married and she has to go solo. This book has looks at relationships with friends and the opposite sex in a smart and funny fashion.

The book is already receiving a ton of praise and has readers actually laughing out loud. Nylon magazine says "beautiful". Marie Claire says "seriously good writing" and Entertainment Weekly says "raw and honest." I can't wait to read it so I can add to the flurry of positive reviews.

Smart Girls Like Me is available at: Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Powell's

Coming soon: Style A to Zoe

Style A to Zoe
Can a 70 lb woman who has a complexion which resembles that of a raisin dole out fashion advice? Probably not.

Unless, of course, her name is Rachel Zoe. Then she can serve as much advice as she wants.

Zoe's boho-chic style and shrinking clients (Nicole Richie and Lindsay Lohan) catapulted her into the public eye and has turned her into a fashion authority. Rachel Zoe has decided to share her expertise with the world by writing her first book which is hitting shelves October 3rd.

Zoe's book Style A to Zoe spills insider tips on how to live a fashionable life. The book focuses on must-have accessories, wardrobe staples, when to splurge and when to save, how to decorate, entertain, and travel in style. She even taps into her fashionable friends for this book including: Michael Kors, Donatella Versace, and Diane von Furstenberg.

As much as Rachel Zoe makes me sick, I love her at the same time. I plan on picking up the book once it hits shelves. Style A to Zoe: The Art of Fashion, Beauty, & Everything Glamour $24.99

Who wrote the book of style?

Filed under: Celebrities with Style, Books

In the past, stylists were the unsung heroes of the fashion world. No longer. Now stylists have their own clothing lines, endorsement deals and red carpet moments. They are even getting their own book. Fashion Week Daily reports that Stylist: The Creation of Style is a 272-page hardcover by Rizzoli Books that ncludes an introduction and interviews conducted by Sarah Mower and a foreword by Vogue editrix Anna Wintour. The coffee table book, which sells for $75 also features 225 photos. It doesn't come out until October which means it could be a great holiday gift for your favorite fashionista.

A new take on the book bag

Caitlin Phillips is one crafty girl. I wish I had known about her when I was cleaning out my mother's house and donating tons of old books to the library. Phillips, whose company is called Rebound Designs, make purses from the covers of old hardback books. The pages are removed and then Phillips handcrafts each purse, matching the fabric and handle to the cover. She will also create a purse for you from your favorite book. The purse shown here sells for $110. Need a cheaper thrill, she always creates pins make from the particularly saucy bits of romance novels that sell for $8.

Style Icon: Don't Hassel the Hoff

Filed under: Men, Celebrities with Style

If there's one guy that's consistently been a men's style icon for the past three decades, it's David Hasselhoff. Not only was the dude in charge on Baywatch (an enviable position, indeed), he was Michael Knight in Knight Rider for crying out loud. What man wouldn't -- to this day -- give his right arm for the chance to drive that car?

Now all of us can learn from this master of cool, as "The Hoff" is releasing an autobiography -- Don't Hassel the Hoff.

Here's the scoop from the man himself: "This book is my opportunity to print something from my heart, to tell the truth about what happened to me on the long and winding road from Baltimore to Baywatch to Broadway – and beyond. This book is about my successes and my failures, my strengths and my weaknesses. And, above all, it is about the hope contained in the Knight Rider slogan: 'One man can make a difference.'"

The book goes on sale May 15th. Pre-reserve your copy now. This man is a legend.

Rachel Zoe writes a book?

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

Once you've been a stylist to the stars and an ex-stylist to the stars, the only thing left to do before you disappear into ether is a write a book. At least that's what Rachel Zoe plans to do with her free time now that she is not running around Los Angeles shoving diet pills into Nicole Richie's handbag. The so-called Raisin Face will write a book entitled, Style from A to Zoe: The Guide to All Things Glamour.

And what can we expect from the A to Zoe primer? My guess is that she will fill the book will all sorts of healthy, inspiring, body-positive aphorisms so she can go on the Oprah show and try to convince America that she's terribly misunderstood. She'll say that despite what Nicole Richie thinks, she's really a kind person who wants everyone to feel good about themselves no matter how they look.

Will we believe it? NO!

We've got your number, Zoe, and it's a big fat 0, as in size 0.

Look Book gets a book

Filed under: Style in the News, Books

Stylewatchers are going to have plenty of new reading material soon. Not only are the Go Fug Yourself girls working on a book but now New York Magazine's popular Look Book segment is going to get its own book. The Look Book Book will feature some of the stylish New Yorkers who have appeared in the magazine as well as new stylish city dwellers. The book will also include backstory on some of interviewees and what happened to them after they appeared in the magazine. This week's Look Book features jewelry designer and mom, Bess Abraham. I wonder if Gawker is planning a book on their "Looking at the Look Book" column too.
