Guest Blogger Christine Mielke from Temptalia - 8 MAC Brushes You Need

Today, our super special Total Beauty Guest Blogger is Christine Mielke, founder and editor-in-chief of Temptalia -- a go-to destination for the latest news, reviews, and how-tos on all your favorite beauty products. Here, she gives us advice on makeup brushes -- which are a magical mystery to many!

face brushes

Every beauty buff needs to have their fair share of quality brushes designed especially for the face; from blush to bronzer. Make sure you know your beauty brush basics and MAC Makeup basics before you head off on a spending spree -- it'll add up before you know it!

129 Powder/Blush Brush
($34.00) is your best bet for general blush application. Seriously, I'm constantly reaching for this brush whenever I go to apply colored blush. If you can only afford one face brush, this is the one I recommend getting first, because it can apply blush, highlighters, and do a little bit of buffing in a pinch. It's thick, dense, and deliciously soft on the skin. (And don't be fooled by the 129 in the brush sets -- it is not at all the same in regards to quality.)

Adesign solves our problems

Filed under: Cosmetics, Must Haves, Beauty Tips

Here's a problem we have:

The brushes that come in blush compacts are about as useful as Tila Tequila Shot at Love rejects. It's like trying to apply eyeliner with a pair of tweezers. It is the wrong tool.

This is compounded by the fact that if you keep a regular blush brush in your makeup bag (or, heaven forbid, loose in your purse), you get stray blush everywhere like you have no mama, and it can even be damaging to the brush! It's a lose-lose situation, and makes it hard to keep blush with you--and you need it this season!

The Adesign Kabuki Brush? Solves our problem.

Could Spinlash solve your mascara woes?

Every cosmetics company has a mascara on the market that promises to volumize, lengthen, and eliminate clumps, but how many actually live up to the hype?

Second City Style thinks that Spinlash might be the answer to all of our mascara prayers. The mascara, which comes in black or brownish-black, has a rotating brush. It can spin both ways, allowing you to easily apply mascara to your top and bottom lashes.

Hommage takes shaving to a different level

Filed under: Haute Home, Accessories, Style in the News, Men, Skin Care

Yes, Hommage takes shaving to a different level, and by level I mean income bracket. I have no doubt that a shave with one of their products would be incredible, but seeing as the razors and kits range from $200 to $6,500 there is a good chance I will never know for certain.

Tweezerman complexion brush

Tweezerman is best-known for brow-grooming tools: tweezers, scissors, trimmers. But Tweezerman makes other products that offer the quality, precision and lifetime-warranty that you expect from this company.

My newest favorite is the Tweezerman facial brush. You can use this brush to wash your face or apply a gentle exfoliating scrub. The soft, flexible bristles insure you will not overdo it when it comes to pressure. I'm notorious for washing my face with too much, well, gusto, so this facial brush has been a godsend for me because it regulates my technique.

When you buy a complexion brush, you also get a soft cotton headband to keep your baby hairs out of the way when you're getting down to business. The set sells for $9.99.

Yves Saint Laurent's Perfect Touch

Foundation application can be tricky. Do you use a sponge? Do you use your fingers? Or is it that you are supposed to use a brush?

I'm sorry to say that I can't answer that question conclusively. But I can say that by and large, most makeup artists I know suggest using a brush. But sometimes figuring out exactly how to use the brush can be tricky. That's why Yves Saint Laurent Beaute developed the Perfect Touch Foundation. The first of its kind, the Perfect Touch is an all-in-one foundation bottle with a built in brush. Simply turn the brush to the 'on' position and the foundation flows out from the bottle. Turn it to the 'off' position and you can gently sweep your foundation on. It's practically fool proof! Of course picking out the right shade of foundation is a problem for another day.
