Old Loves and New Infatuations: Sebastian Potion 9

Filed under: Hair Care, Product Reviews

We're pretty sure some of you are sister-fans of Sebastian Potion 9 (which we still refer to as Potion #9, but corrected in this post so we don't look dumb.)

Remember the sticky, gluey consistency, that was so hard to get off your hands? The orange color? The way you could use in on wet or dry hair, and how it was the one product you could count on to give your Rachel-do the perfect mixture of smoothness with body?

Oh, those were some good times. But inexplicably, we were lured away from our reliable Potion 9 by the novel temptations of Pureology and Bumble and bumble.

We'd forgotten just how good Potion 9 was, until a box of review samples for the New Sebastian Professional line arrived.

Tip of the day: Learn how to look like you're supposed to be milking cows

Filed under: Hair Care, Style Tip of the Day

It seems like easy breezy boho is here to stay, which makes us lazy folk very happy. We've all had a couple of years to get this look down pat but we haven't quite figured out what to do with our hair. That is until the fateful day we spotted a handful of starlets like Ashley Olsen, Nicole Richie, Sienna Miller, and Rachel Bilson supporting a milkmaid braid. Gloooorious.

Bumble & Bumble hair tonic

If I could stand the taste of cod liver oil, I'd certainly drink it every night before going to bed, and if plain cold cream didn't make me break out, I'd happily smear it on every evening.

In case you can't tell, I have a soft spot for old fashioned health and beauty remedies.

So when I saw that the hair product company Bumble & Bumble made a hair tonic, I naturally tossed down cash to give the retro-sounding elixir a try. And while I'm not quite sure what the tonic does -- the website says it "nourishes, smooths, detangles and lubricates" -- I love it nonetheless.

Though I'm not convinced that the tonic is a miracle worker for your hair, it does feel fantastic on your scalp. B&B's tonic contains herbs and minerals, including a healthy dose of tea tree oil* to invigorate your head and hair from root to tip.

*If you are male and under 18, be careful with tea tree oil.

Frederic Fekkai fights frizz best

Filed under: Hair Care, Steals and Deals

I'll admit it, I have major hair-envy. My hair is blonde, so naturally I couldn't stop imagining myself with beautiful auburn tresses until I tried to achieve it myself and ended up as an unfortunate Kool-Aid inspired redhead. I've gone from a nearly waist-length mane to the most delicate of pixie cuts, and have changed my highlight/lowlight combination more times than I can count. My piece d'resistance, however, was when I convinced a stylist, against her will, to give me a body wave.

To the poor stylist's credit, she warned me about potential frizz problems. Apparently, when you chemically curl already chemically dyed hair, you run the risk of ending up with frizzy feathers, rather than actual hair follicles. This, I'm afraid to say, is exactly what happened to me. Never one to dwell on the negatives, however, I embarked on a mission to find the best frizz-fighters out there.

Frederic Fekkai's Luscious Curls Curl Enhancing Lotion ($18.50) wins the award, in my opinion, as the best frizz-taming product available. Fekkai's shampoo and conditioner (both $20, from the Luscious Curls line) are also excellent, as they provide mucho moisture, which my feather-hair definitely needed. Other good products include Redken's Smooth Down Butter Treat ($12), and Bumble & Bumble's Curl Conscious Curl Creme ($29).
