Take a deep breath this holiday season with Tic Tac Chill

Filed under: Fashionable Food, Product Reviews

The holiday season brings with it some specific stresses. While we love to shop, spending hours and hours at the mall, standing in line to buy things we're not even sure our friends will like can take a toll on our mental state. And then, add the following into the mix:

Dylan's Candy Bar launches Re-Treat

Re-Treat product display

Last night, upstairs at Dylan's Candy Bar's flagship store on 60th Street and Third Avenue in New York City, the launch party for Re-Treat was held.

Dylan's Candy Bar, founded by Dylan Lauren, the daughter of designer Ralph Lauren and photographer Ricky Lauren (a.k.a. The Royal Family of Androgynous Names), is considered one of the top destinations for sweets both in New York and internationally. The store is brightly colored and feels a bit like Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory, only less scary.

Re-Treat is like, the best idea ever.

People are jacking kids for their candy; No, really

Filed under: Style in the News

You've got to have either a very mighty and insatiable sweet tooth or just a black heart to rob a candy a store where kids will scrap and save every last dime they have in order to purchase something sticky and sweet.

Call this a reaction to the desperate times our economy presents us or just plain pathetic, but some thugs robbed the luxe Dylan's Candy Bar in Manhattan at gun point last week, walking away with $7,000 after cleaning out all of the cash registers.

No arrests have been made, so watch out kids. We suggest you munch on granola bars until the purps are caught. Le sigh.

Demeter wants you to smell sweet

Ladies, at one point in time, we've all picked up one of those lip chaps that come in scents like Hershey's, Skittles, or Cinnabon. They usually smell really, really good, you know, like the real thing, and if no one is looking, we may even try to take a taste.

Well, Demeter understands that we all have an insatiable sweet tooth and they've created frangrances that smell just as sweet as those lip chaps that we've all come to love:

According to WWD, Demeter expects to ship the offbeat fragrances with scents like "Hershey's Kisses, Special Dark, Reese's Peanut Butter Cup and Jolly Rancher Green Apple" to stores in early 2009.

Luckily, though, you chew on the real candy bars until then. Yummy, indeed.

Finally, a good Easter shirt

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Men

I don't know how many times I've spent Easter morning dressed like some banker in a short-sleeved business shirt and a clip-on tie, looking for eggs and hoping that the Peeps didn't have E.coli (they don't). Of course that was when I was a kid (early 20's).

Nowadays I'm more likely to be sitting on the couch in my boxers and asking the kids to hunt Daddy another beer that the bunny hid in the icebox. Oh, family traditions.

No more. Thanks to the good folks at Snorg Tees I will once again be dressed on Easter Sunday, but this time with style.

The My Butt Hurts (16.95) (ladies) t-shirt brings forth a very delicate matter often overshadowed during the Easter season, "the perils of life as a chocolate bunny" (from website). What strikes me as, well, striking, is that the perils of the candy bunny seem disturbingly similar to those suffered by the Playboy Bunny, except for the ears part. Freaky, isn't it?

If Easter isn't your thing, or if you're just greedy, here are some other fine shirts from Snorg Tees:

Obama Chocolates (Oh, and Oprah)

If you head over to Cosmic Chocolates Shop you can customize your own box of Obama and Oprah chocolates. Have three Obama's and one Oprah if your heart so desires or all Oprah's if you aren't an Obama supporter. These chocolates come in two delicious flavors; raspberry ganache and espresso cognac.

Each box is only $12 so get them while you still can.

Truly, madly, gingerly

Ginger ale, ginger cookies, ginger Altoids, ginger hand-santizer, ginger perfume -- if it can made with the fragrant, flavorful root, I'm into it.

My most recent ginger find is Ginger Chews from the ginger people. Like the Jujyfruits of your childhood trip to the movie theater with mom and dad, Gingers Chews have the absolutely jaw-exhausting consistency that makes you half-worried that you will pull your teeth out and half-amused by the comical amount of chewing it takes to get through a single piece of candy. Well-balanced and stimulating, Ginger Chews are playful candy fun for all-grown-up adult palates.

Is Valentine's Day candy bad for your skin?

High on my list of favorite beauty blogs, is The Beauty Brains, a blog which brings you beauty news but with a bit of science. This week they are tackling a bunch of Valentine-related themes including the rather thorny question: is sugar bad for the skin?

As a sugar-addicted person I was hoping they say no. I know that theory that chocolate causes acne has been said to be a fiction (although my grandfather, a world-famous dermatologist always swore that chocolate led to pimples) but what about all sweet stuff? The Beauty Brains report that Susan Van Dyke, M.D. of Van Dyke Laser and Skin in Scottsdale tells of hospital studies in which test groups given sugar did not break out more. But a 2002 study by Loren Cordain, a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado thinks that a high sugar diet causes a change in insulin production leading to acne.

The worse news for old bags like me is that sugar could cause wrinkles. Some dermatologists think that high levels of blood sugar can make the skin stiff leading to wrinkles. There is no definitive research yet but so far, the news doesn't look promising. So now the only question remaining for me is vanity or candy, which will win out?

Caramel + salt = awesome

A block away from my house, there is a wonderful gourmet food shop with an exceptional selection of cheeses, olive oils, sweets and meat. For the most part, I can't afford to shop there, so I just go for the great free samples. (When family members visit me, they always spend a small fortune at the store, so I feel like the free samples are the price that Feast! must pay for my favor.)

Yesterday on my Feast! graze, I noticed a new candy -- Bequet Confections sea salt caramels -- for fifty cents (even cheapos like me can afford that!). Foodies have been buzzing about salt caramels this fall, so I was eager to see how the salty-sweet combination would play out. And the verdict? Salted caramels are marvelous!

If you'd like to try this trendy new candy, bequetconfections.com sells an 8 oz. bag for $8.50.

Emma-Jane & Tan, wearable sweetness

Here's one way perhaps, to stave off the additional of holiday pounds: wear sweets instead of eating them.

We've seen a BLT sandwich ring and wearable sweet treats from Tiffany before, but Emma-Jane & Tan have a whole line of confectionery jewelry designs. The collection is comprised of 14K yellow, white and pink gold jewelry that gets a hint of added sparkle from small diamonds. The Sweety necklace is rose gold and sparkles with .05 carats and sells for $495. It might also make a nice gift for the sweet person in your life.

Chupa Chups fashion is a sugar overload

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing

When it comes to free bank lollipops, the competition is sharply divided between Dum-Dums and Chupa Chups. Accustomed to this short list of competitors, it is hard to predict how sweets producer Chupa Chups would negotiate a more competitive industry, like, for instance, the world of fashion.

But they're giving it a shot nonetheless. According to a Spainish fashion trade journal, Chupa Chups will be launching a fashion label dubbed 'Sugar Victim' during the runway shows in Paris and Madrid. The corporation has leaked a few details about what buyers can expect from this unprecedented candy-turned-couture business venture. Sugar Victim clothing will feature "cremey, flower-power prints" with 3-D techniques and embellishments.

"Embellishments" and "flower-power" eh? Well, I hate to break this to the brain trust over a Chupa Chups, but that t-shirt has already been done. In 1989, I had three of them.
