Longest catwalk EVER

Filed under: Style in the News, Fashion Week

What's the longest catwalk you've ever seen? The Victoria's Secret catwalk seems pretty long to us, but that doesn't even come close to the world's longest catwalk, created by the House of Fraser on Monday for the launch of London Fashion Week.

Models started walking the catwalk on Monday in Land's End, and the models will walk a relay from there to John O'Groats -- a walk that will take a total of about 382 hours.

A variety of models, volunteers, and House of Fraser staff will walk a distance of 1193.6 miles, not stopping for night, nor rain, nor snow. They will pass some of the UK's most well-known points of interest, including Stone Henge, The Angel of the North, and Edinburgh Castle. Hope everyone's comfortable walking in heels!

People Tree's ethical runway show

Filed under: Runway Trends, Clothing, Green Fashion

People Tree, a pioneer in the world of eco-conscious fashion, held a swanky runway show in the hip London club Whiskey Mist at Zeta last night, and it wasn't only the clothing that was held to ethical standards. People Tree chose to use models from Quintessentially Models, an agency that "takes an ethically-based approach to model management refusing to represent any 'size zero' models."

Don't think for a second, though, that this was a bunch of chubby hippies looking at tie-dye t-shirts. People Tree's Autumn/Winter 2008 is full of trendy dresses, tops, and capes. Check out the gallery to see a sampling of styles.

Fashion Week is in full swing, and gorgeous models are strutting their stuff in stunning designer wares. Most runway shows are the pinnacle of poise and grace -- but let's be real: those are some serious heels, and tumbles, trips or the occasional face plant are inevitable. Here's our top 10 favorite fiascoes, starting with Miss America's topple at the most recent Miss Universe pageant (and if you thought that was bad -- just wait 'till you see what happens when there's a gaping hole for the models to contend with!).

Fashion secrets from Christina Aguilera

We love Christina Aguilera's diva-ness, we love the fact that she's married to a "normal" guy and we adore her fantastic voice -- but most of all, we love her old school style!

Designer crashes through runway, disappears

Picture yourself at Charleston Fashion Week. Sure, it's not New York, or LA, but you've been pleasantly surprised by a few of the designers, and the friendly woman on your right recommended a darling little place to grab coffee after the show, so -- HEY! HOLY CRAP! Did that woman just disappear through the floor of the runway?

Oh yes she did.

And before you go feeling bad for laughing at some poor woman's embarrassing misfortune, you'll be delighted to know that the people of Charleston are thoroughly enjoying the attention their fashion week is receiving thanks to this now infamous runway collapse.

Check out more runway face plants after this video.

The Pussycat Dolls want you in their panties

Filed under: Runway Trends, Style in the News, Swimwear and Lingerie, Celebrities with Style, Fashion Week

I'll just start with the obvious: Don't you wish your girlfriend was hot like this? You know, assuming you have a girlfriend. If not, it is also acceptable for wives, co-workers, or in the case you are an actual woman, yourself.

The Pussycat Dolls performed at the Mercedes Benz 2008 Los Angeles Fashion Week to showcase their new line of intimate wear- you know, the stuff from their videos.

The ladies "sang" while the models did their thing. It's eerily like a reoccurring dream I have, only my soundtrack is better.

I could just ramble on here, but I believe the Pussycat Dolls say it best:

Oh, baby dolls

I know you like me (I know you like me)
I know you do (I know you do)
Thats why whenever I come around shes all over you
And I know you want it (I know you want it)
It's easy to see (it's easy to see)
And in the back of your mind
I know you should be home with me

[Chorus]
Dont cha wish your girlfriend was hot like me
Dont cha wish your girlfriend was a freak like me
Dont cha, dont cha
Dont cha wish your girlfriend was raw like me
Dont cha wish your girlfriend was fun like me
Dont cha, dont cha

See? If you like lingerie and bad grammar then this line is for you. Hell, even if you're neutral on grammar it's still fun to look at:

New Gap, less crappy

Filed under: Runway Trends, Stores We Love, Fashion Week

It's been a really long time since Gap was anything to write home about. After achieving phenomenal success back when Hootie and the Blowfish had fans, the company lost its way -- limping along as a watered-down, cheaper (but not cheap enough) version of JCrew, too expensive to be Target, yet too bland to be worth the money.

But things are looking up. Gap recently hired Patrick Robinson, a new creative director who they hoped would return the brand back to its glory days. And while sales still suck, the clothes are at least looking halfway decent.

Gap's showing at New York Fashion Week (the first new line under Robinson's guidance) revealed a new direction -- capitalizing on the 90s resurgence, and combining grunge aesthetic (read: flannel shirts) with more modern looking pants and boots. In traditional Gap style, it's all a little safe (fashionable, but not so fashionable that you'd get beat up for it at your suburban high school), but I bet even the discerning fashionista will be able to find an item or two that they'd be willing to include in their regular wardrobe.

Biggest earmuffs in human history?

Filed under: Runway Trends, Accessories, Men

While the world prepares for New York Fashion Week, Berlin has quietly been hosting a fashion week of its own. The event doesn't get nearly as much attention (with most of the major designers unveiling their collections in either Paris or New York) -- but, nevertheless, there's certainly been some interesting looks coming down the runway.

Like this guy. I don't know what kind of arctic freeze he's preparing for, but rest assured, when the blizzard of the millennium hits, he'll be ready. These gigantic earmuffs -- possibly designed for men with disturbingly large ears -- make the poor guy's head look like the meat on a really, really unappealing sandwich.

To be fair, the muffs were designed by a student at the School of Art and Design -- so, presumably, whoever created them is still learning. Or maybe they're just crazy.

Star Wars on the catwalk: $159,000 robot leggings

Since when did catwalk models start dressing like robots from Star Wars? At first glance, this might look like an uber-nerdy sci-fi fashion convention, but the photo is from an honest-to-goodness runway show. Industry big wigs who attended the event called the looks "edgy, aggressive and urban," but I think most normal people can agree this woman looks half hipster, half C-3PO (the whiny British robot from Episodes IV, V and VI who was always scared he was going to die).

Other designs in the collection look like Stormtroopers (the dudes in white outfits who worked for Darth Vader), the Terminator, and the outfits from Tron.

Ever since the rise of blogging, social media, etc, it's been cool to be a nerd -- but this is taking geek chic to a whole new level. May The Force be with you if you try dressing like this in public.

Victoria's Secret 2007 fashion show on YouTube

Filed under: Runway Trends, Swimwear and Lingerie

Did you miss the Victoria's Secret fashion show when it aired on TV? Never fear! Thanks to YouTube, you can check out the whole thing online. You can see all the looks (most of which are great, by the way), and also catch Hedi Klum singing a duet with her husband, Seal -- plus the requisite crappy model acting as a transition between segments.

The photo above links to part one. Because you can only upload 10min videos to YouTube, the rest of the show has been broken down into four additional segments: part two, part three, part four, and part five.

Enjoy!

LA Fashion Week Day 3: Dina Bar-El, Grey Ant, Jenny Han, Whitley Kros

Filed under: Runway Trends, Events: On the Scene, Style in the News, Fashion Week

Christian Audigier showThe third day of LA Fashion Week featured collections by Gregory Parkinson, Jenny Han, Christian Audigier, Dina Bar-El, Grey Ant and Whitley Kros.

My favorite show of the day was Dina Bar-El. Last year, Bar-El came under heavy criticism for using child models in her show, so as you might expect, the show was juvey-free this time around. I do have one gripe for Ms. Bar-El: what's up with all the white girls? Come on, Dina, get with the program.

However, if you can overlook her homogeneous choice in models, Bar-El's clothes were wonderful. Her evening wear was particularly stunning this time around. I loved the silk gowns in rich jewel tones and her plucky cocktail dresses with striking necklines. The simple makeup and sleek hair was also right on target.

My least favorite show was without question Christian Audigier's presentation. The catwalk/stage was set for high drama -- there was even moody lighting and music to match. To tell you the truth, I kind of think that the combination of the busy clothes and overwhelming set left me agitated. Consequently, I've got no love for the clothes either.

I wasn't sure what the designer was hoping to create. Some of the clothes had a 1920s Jazz Age feel -- flapper dresses, feather boas, cropped hair -- and I liked that part. However, some outfits looked like they were Jodie Foster's castoffs from the set of the movie Taxi Driver. Trust me, underage prostitute is not a good look. I also hated Audigier's makeup: red lips and dark eyes. Most models can't handle dramatic eyes and lips, and they end up looking like tweaked-out trannies.

Adding all of this up, if you can image an underage, tweaked-out trannie prostitute in a feather boa, you basically get Christian Audigier's Spring/Summer 08 collection. You can also check out the woman pictured at right.

We've picked out some of our favorites and our, well, least favorites for the Styledash LA Fashion Week Gallery. Let us know what you think.

Here are a few shots to check out:

Top five runway falls

Watching runway shows is way better than watching sports. You have beautiful people parading beautiful fashions down the runway and you have the potential of those beautiful people taking a major fall. I mean it's sad when people fall down and hurt or embarrass themselves, but in all honesty ... it's pretty freaking funny too.

New York magazine has compiled the top five runway falls in recent history. There are videos for some and pictures for the others. I was shocked that Noami Campbell's spill during the Vivienne Westwood show wasn't on there, perhaps it was too long ago. Anyhow, drum roll please ...

1.) The lovely and beautiful Jessica Stam's fall during the Chloe's 2006 Fall show. This one was bad, like really bad. Stam tripped over her own foot, collapsed forward, and smacked her head on the runway. She didn't cry and slunk off the stage, she stood up to a sound of loud applause.

2.) Milana Bogolepova took a spill at Dior's 2008 Resort show. Her body, only covered in a tiny swimsuit, took a major slam ... twice. The "officials" blamed the shoes, but that didn't stop the other models from making fun of her backstage. Poor Milana.

3.) At Proenza Schouler, Elise Crombez bit in 2007. Another shoe malfunction. She was hurled forward by her dangerous stilettos but pulled a major save and escaped the potentially tragic call. You go Elise!

4.) Vivienne Westwood is known for her dangerous shoes and dangerous runway incidents. So in Spring 2007 it was no surprise that Kamila W. killed her career on Westwood's runway. She tumbled, got up, fluffed her hair. The fluff must have been too much for the skinny model because her ankles failed her and she was down for the count.

5.) Marc Jacobs Spring 2007 runway was way too slippery for model Iekeliene Stange. Paired with slick shoes, she was no match for the runway show. After a quick slip she kicked off her shoes and rocked the runway barefoot. The crowd went wild.

New "it" model discovered while eating pizza with her mom

Filed under: Runway Trends, Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

Discovered eating pizzaWe've all heard the stories -- models and actresses that were "discovered" by some Hollywood big shot while they were waiting tables, or just walking down the streets of Los Angeles. These rags to riches tales of instant celebrity are pretty ridiculous -- especially when you consider the hundreds of thousands of beautiful, talented young people aspiring to a career in the entertainment industry.

But apparently, every once in awhile, it really does happen.

Irina Kulikova is the fashion industry's latest modeling sensation. In the runway shows for fall/winter 2007-8, she walked for huge design houses like Prada and Chanel, and will soon be featured in advertising campaigns by Prada, Jill Sander, Marc Jacobs and Pringle of Scotland.

So how did a virtual nobody become such an overnight success? Rumor has it that Liv Tyler, the American actress, spotted Kulikova eating in a Moscow restaurant, and voila -- instant success.

I've subsequently decided to start taking my laptop to Pizza Hut, so that a book publisher will "discover" me. International fame and untold fortune is right around the corner -- I can almost taste it! (And, as you might suspect, fame tastes like pepperoni.)

Catwalk model eats dirt on Paris runway

Filed under: Runway Trends, Events: On the Scene, Style in the News

We've all seen beautiful people fall in public and chuckled to ourselves, but, somehow, it never stops being funny.

What I love most about this YouTube clip of this model wobbling, stumbling, and eventually face planting (twice), is not just that it features some woman falling down in the middle of a runway show, but that the news anchors commenting on the footage can't keep from cracking up while it's playing.

They just keep showing the fall over and over while they giggle to themselves. It's hysterical.
