Michael Stipe launches a line of shirts for Lacoste - Celebrity designers

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrity Fashion Mistakes

As you've probably noticed, we're all about celebrity designers here at Style List, but somehow we never have very high expectations for their output. The latest collaboration between REM's Michael Stipe and classic high-end designer Lacoste is no exception. According to Rolling Stone, Stipe has put his creative touch on a new line of Lacoste's alligator-encrusted tennis shirts, and they're uhh -- how should we put this -- a little fugly unique.

Ben Harper and David Arquette get Propr

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

There are some celebrities we can imagine starting a clothing line. We'd love for George Clooney to come out with a line of suits, and for Brad Pitt to slap his name on casual hats. However, we definitely didn't anticipate this:

Lauren Conrad to design dresses for the Emmy's - Whose idea was THAT?

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Dresses, Celebrities with Style

Seemingly mere minutes after we told you that Lauren Conrad doesn't actually design the clothes in her collection (about which we're sure you were shocked beyond belief) comes other LC fashion news -- apparently, she has been asked to design dresses for the Emmy Awards.

Yeah, we're pretty baffled, too.

Celebrity clothing designers: Who would you wear?

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

Lots of celebrities have taken to "designing" clothing lines. And, while some of them make sense -- who wouldn't want to dress like Penelope Cruz? -- some are questionable, to say the least. Check out this list of celebrity clothing designers and then cast your vote -- who's line would you be most likely to wear?

Lindsay Lohan launches leggings line

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Celebrities with Style

We can see how Lindsay Lohan's mind works: celebrities have endorsed and designed (or in most cases, "designed") everything from perfume to bed linens, motor scooters to jeans... so why not launch a leggings line?

Because no-one asked for or wanted one, perhaps?

George Clooney: not another celebrity designer

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

Will you be at the Westin Palace in Milan when George Clooney launches his new clothing line? Neither will anyone else, because the mysterious press release that was sent out yesterday -- announcing the launch of George Clooney's own GC Exclusive -- is a complete hoax. Word travels fast on the interweb, especially when it comes to Hollywood gossip, and within a few hours the news had spread.

While GC Exclusive does have it's own website -- which looks totally cheesy -- Clooney insists that this is some kind of early April Fool's prank. Who plays April Fool's jokes on the media in late March? That's weak. Is this another prank orchestrated by Ashton Kutcher and friends -- like that Paris Hilton's shaman thing?

Natalie Portman's vegan shoes are almost here

Filed under: Accessories, Shoes, Celebrities with Style, Style for a Cause

Natalie PortmanSome of you may have already heard that Natalie Portman's new line of shoes is going to come out on January 15th. All her designs are animal-friendly, meaning they are cruelty-free and are produced in humane conditions. Even though I'm not quite as tenacious as Ms. Portman, I greatly admire the fact that she's put forth the effort to make this difference.

Elle.com has new pictures of the shoes and details on where to purchase. Each pair will set you back about $200. No one said it was cheap to be cruelty-free, unfortunately. Style-wise, I sort of feel like all of the shoes look a bit dated. I mean, they don't look necessarily out-of-fashion, but the preview pictures remind me of something I could have seen at a Nine West in 1998. I do rather like the shiny Mary Jane heels, though.

Psst... Honestly, I think most of the drive to buy is caused by the Natalie Portman name.

Would you wear jeans by Amy Winehouse?

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Jeans, Celebrities with Style

Amy WinehouseAccording to this article, for some bizarre reason, several fashion houses are looking to "Rehab" singer Amy Winehouse to become the next celeb designer. The beehive-bearing songstress has been called on to come up with her own line of denim jeans and although no offers have been settled yet, the very thought of thousands of folks walking around looking like Winehouse is enough to make me lose a few weeks' worth of sleep.

Not only is her sense of style, uh, questionable, but, from the looks of her candid photos, she only owns about three pairs of pants, all in equally horrid states of squalor. Why in the world would anyone even entertain the notion of handing over design powers to her? And would you be willing to wear anything designed by her, judging by her current sense of style? Here's to hoping that she just sticks to her day job (which she is quite good at, by the way; "Back to Black" is excellent).

Is William Rast the real deal?

Filed under: Runway Trends, Style in the News, Clothing, Jeans, Men, Celebrities with Style

justin timberlake for william rastAt first glance, the world of clothing design doesn't seem so different from the world of music production. Both require an artist's mind, rely heavily upon image, and have to be creative in order to compete. It makes sense, then, that so many songbirds have attempted the jump from musical artist to designer extraordinarie.

The problem with this trend, however, is that image alone can't sell a clothing line. Most of us have had the experience of coveting a fabulous dress, finding the one store in our tri-state area that carries the dress, trying the dress on, and wanting to pull our hair out in frustration because IT DOESN'T FIT! See, image isn't everything, and consumers aren't the only ones voicing their disappointment.

JT brings sexy back to your backpack

Filed under: Accessories, Celebrities with Style

On AdJab yesterday, Adam Finley wrote that pop icon Justin Timberlake has a new line of school bags produced by Ful brand backpacks. While he isn't pictured on the bags or in the advertisements, the packs have the ever-so-subtle illusion to Timberlake by being dubbed the "JT line".

I suppose that this is an attempt to appeal to JT's younger audience -- the school-age girls who swooned over him in his boy-band days. But in the long run, I'm not so sure this is the best direction for him to take if indeed he wants to be a serious adult performer. With his solo career starting to really take off, I'm not so sure the backpack-wearing demographic is the one he should be courting. Backpacks don't have a lot of street cred, even if they were featured in Hustle & Flow.
