Connect with the world, literally, by wearing velcro

Filed under: Style in the News, Vintage and Retro

Forget the baby bjorn, or the sling. Who needs carriers, strollers, or baby backpacks? With the new invention of velcro clothing, now you can just stick your baby to you and go. Look, ma, no hands!

The designers of all velcro outfits have one thing in mind -- human connection. They are imagining cities full of people walking around wearing velcro, bumping into each other, getting stuck together and starting up a conversation. The brand is called Takkiainen, which is developed by a company called Com-pa-ny, "Takkiainen is a jacket for lonely or bored people. It is designed to help the wearer to get in contact with others. Since we brush against each other every day as we move around in the city, we can use our clothes as a medium for meeting people and communicating with them."

Com-pa-ny, based out of Finland, coincidentally makes many other amazing products such as silicon socks (for outdoor use, no shoes), the safety skirt (giving you absolutely no chance of flashing an accidental up-skirt), jeans with built in gloves, jeans with a tail, " to sit on, to lean on, to balance, to wrap around you," a skirt with four purses attached, a rocking bear, a blanket you could hibernate in, literally, a beard made out of wool, in case you're looking to get a cleaner Adrien Grenier look, a hood and backpack all combined into one, and my favorite of them all, shoes with the kiddy shoes attached right on top for easy father/daughter dancing. The products are insane, exciting and innovative. You have to browse through the gallery to see what I'm talking about, everything that Com-pa-ny makes is out of this world! Check out the products and then tell me what crazy invention is your favorite!

Glowing chair reveals your true weight

Changes color depending on your weightThis chair looks like something you'd see in those too-cool-for-school clubs that cater to people who wish their lives were more like liquor commercials. Just looking at makes me want to give some girl a flirty look, whisper something sexy in her ear, then casually remove the glass of Captain Morgan from her hand and drink it with a wry grin.

Clubs like this are stupid, and, chances are, you'd look stupid if you put this chair in your house.

But it does have a very interesting feature that might just make it worthwhile. The chair actually changes colors as it interacts with people -- becoming a darker shade of red depending on the weight of whoever is sitting on it.

I love that the mood of a party could be constantly shifting based on who's sitting or standing. However, the obvious drawback is that most people would be too nervous to use the chair, for fear that it'd turn dark red and draw attention to their weight -- so make sure you have confident friends before buying a few for your funky modern pad.

Make electronic trash into something n+ew

The notion of making trash into furniture may not be appealing at first, but take a look at Rodrigo Alonso's n+ew (no more electronic waste) "stool-sculpture-installation"s and you might change your mind. Made from e-waste (electronic waste, ranging from keyboards to various wires and cords) held in epoxy resin and aluminum, these stools are the perfect addition to any geek's sitting room. The cluttered look of the mess inside is a nice contrast to the sleek shape of the piece itself.

Check out the rest of Alonso's website for more interesting designs. I'm terribly fond of the B + W dishes.
