Will Hot Topic survive Perez Hilton?

Filed under: Handbags, Accessories, Style in the News, Clothing, Videos, Celebrities with Style

Perez Hilton's new "fashion" line at Hot Topic is geared towards his demographic of readers, young, female and cheap. We think it is also safe to assume that they are easily persuaded to buy crap.

In a video interview and vanity session Perez the pot insults the kettle that is pseudo-celebrity. He basically calls out Heidi Montag and Lauren Conrad and claims that his brand smells better. We think they all stink about the same.

Donatella Versace won't do H&M line

So many major designers have done lines for H&M that Donatella Versace would be a seemingly logical choice to team up with the retailer. But, she won't be following in the steps of Stella McCartney, Viktor and Rolf or Roberto Cavalli.

Budget brides can buy gowns online

Something we've noticed lately is the sudden prevalence of relatively inexpensive wedding dresses on the Internet. It started with Lane Bryant's now-dwindling Bridal collection of dresses and separates, all priced at around $150 initially and now on sale for about fifty bucks a pop. Then we noticed that David's Bridal has an online gown collection with dresses for all sizes priced under $250. Now Torrid has a few new wedding options for the curvy bride, all priced under $250.

Sounds great, right?

Retro Princess: Girl Props

Filed under: Stores We Love, Accessories, Vintage and Retro, Men, Steals and Deals

Crown with Swarovski on 24March is hard. Get yourself a guilt-free pick-me-up.

Retro Princesses and dapper gentlemen take note! Girl Props is a longtime staple of fashionistas and mafiosos in search of uber-cheap accessories in New York City.

One step into their zebra-print lair in Soho sends most people I know into a giddy, bouncy place. Everything is shiny or sparkly, and they really cover their bases. You want a necklace with a gun on it? Done. A water faucet on a chain? Sure. A bracelet with tiny laquered Salvador Dali paintings? I got one there once. Butterflies, flowers, sparkly belts, bright fishnets, crazy wigs, and tiaras are all par for the course. This is your one-stop shop for cheap glitz.

Carefully chosen glitz is an integral part of the Retro Princess look. It doesn't matter if it's cheaper than your latte. For example, this charm necklace for $4.99, and these filigree rings for 99 cents.

A tip to the wise shopper: invest in a good silver chain and a good gold chain. Just switching out the chain on a cheap necklace adds a ton of credibility.

You don't have to come to New York for these deals. It's all available online.

Are cheap shoes a thing of the past?

According to recent research conducted by Mintel, Payless might want to watch its back. The research indicates that over the next five years, the number of shoes purchased each year in the UK is expected to drop by seven percent, according to Manolo the Shoeblogger. And Manolo the Shoeblogger doesn't lie.

And why do I assume that means that cheap shoes are on their way out? Because one-third of the women questioned in the above poll said they now pay more for their shoes, which means that as they make their shoe purchases, they'll be looking for quality over quantity.

What woman do you know who has watched an episode of Sex and the City and not sighed over at least one beautiful pair of designer shoes? Years ago, only a select few were familiar with Manolo Blahnik and Christian Louboutin, and now there are middle-school girls fawning over these sexy heels with the same look in their eyes I had when ogling the members of New Kids on the Block.

Right now, Brooklyn Industries has a bunch of it springtime gear on sale. They've got a really cool line of cheap T-shirts that will make you look like you know what's up -- and historically, the fashionable-slob look has alway been respectable. Only $10 will get you into this brown polo.

These guys started out making recycled messenger bags and now they're running 7 stores in NYC. Their online store is also pretty outstanding -- and they're offering free shipping until Sunday.

Forever 21 to supply luxury at cheap prices

Twelve by TwelveThe super-cheap store Forever 21 recently announced that it will be expanding to include a slightly more sophisticated luxury line, Twelve by Twelve. The website will be launched later this month, followed by in-store additions and a stand-alone in Beverly Hills.

I surprised myself when I went into Forever 21 for the first time, expecting an obnoxious place catering specifically to the popular girls in high school, and bought quite a few tops for myself. However, I'm not sure how I feel about this Twelve by Twelve line. Sure, I've only seen two photos, but it looks a bit ridiculous, not sophisticated. Maybe these clothes would have been in with the rich crowd a few decades ago, but I think the 2000s call for a little more than animal prints and shiny fabrics. Also, what the hell is the mannequin on the right wearing on her poor little head? Looks like a flower pot/windmill hybrid.

Rasterbating is not a sin

RasterbatorFor anyone looking for a cheap, interesting way to decorate a blank wall (I'm looking at you, college students), look into rasterbation. You heard me. The Rasterbator is an amazing online tool that quickly transforms an image of your choice into an easy-to-print format, allowing anyone with a basic printer and computer paper to create posters of any size. My new dorm room currently has bare walls with high ceilings and I found this to be a very cool way to fill up the empty space. At the moment, I'm working on having Stephen Colbert's massive visage tower over me as I sleep.

If you're still not convinced, check out this huge gallery of the hundreds of walls that have already been improved by rasterbation.
