Christian Siriano on Fierce Mamas, Mariah and 7" Heels

Filed under: Runway Trends, Celebrities with Style

Wonder boy designer Christian Siriano just released a new fashion collaboration this week, a maternity line called Fierce Mamas for luxury line Moody Mamas. We were curious to hear about how he went from enfant terrible of Project Runway to designing for expectant moms, plus finds the time to work on a fabulous line of shoes for Payless, and come out with a critically acclaimed fall 2009 line.

We caught up with the busy designer, who was a total sweetheart. He dished with us about the stars he's dressed, how friendly Victoria Beckham is, and what he really thinks about Mariah. He also dropped some exciting hints about new projects he has in the works!

Celeb Fashion Lines

    Celeb: Elisabeth Hasselbeck
    Fashion Line:
    Elisabeth Hasselbeck for Dialogue

    Qualifications:
"The View"'s co-host is the latest name to throw her hat in the designer arena with the Elisabeth Hasselbeck for Dialogue line, which will be sold exclusively at QVC. With no piece costing more than $100, everyone can soon be dressing like the perky TV personality.

    Celeb: Nicole Richie
    Fashion Line: House of Harlow
Qualifications: We still aren't sure why Nicole Richie became famous but what's keeping her famous is surely her fashion sense. The fashionista just launched a jewelry line named after 14-month-old baby number one Harlow and if the lines a hit our money is on Richie announcing a junior line named after baby number two (due at the end of the summer)!

Celeb: Lauren Conrad (in her Jade bubble dress)
    Fashion Line:
    Lauren Conrad Collection
UPDATE: Went out of business on March 23, 2009
Qualifications: An unfinished stint at L.A.'s Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, two years of sorting samples in Teen Vogue's West Coast fashion closet and a new gig with pal Whitney Port at the fashionable PR firm People's Revolution prepped LC for her own designing gig.

    Steve Granitz, WireImage.com

    Celeb: Madonna
Fashion Line: Madonna for Ed Hardy
Qualifications: The 50-year-old popstar has long been a fan of Christian Audigier's line and now we hear she'll be making her second foray into fashion design for the label. Madge's first effort (2007's M by Madonna for H&M) was a hit, but it's hard for us to imagine her new creations will be the much needed break from Ed Hardy's unfortunate tattoo cover box.

    Fred Duval, FilmMagic

    Celeb:Taylor Swift
Fashion Line: L.E.I. Sundresses by Taylor Swift
Qualifications:The young country singer is releasing a line of frocks this February that her die-hard fans will love and moms can afford. We're sure Swift's brand will expand into denim.

    Charley Gallay, Getty Images

    Celeb: Dita Von Teese
Fashion Line: Science of Sexy for Wonderbra
Qualifications: This burlesque bombshell spends most of her time in scanty skivvies, so we're absolutely confident she is capable of creating amazing lingerie! Of her '40s and '50s-inspired line Von Teese says "Underwear isn't just something that you put on for your lover -- you wear it for you."

    Mike Marsland, WireImage

    Celeb: Lauren Bush
Fashion Line:Lauren Pierce (hits stores in Spring 2009)
Qualifications: An alum of both Parsons New School for Design in NYC and Central Saint Martins College in London, first niece and former model Lauren Bush definitely has a solid design foundation. Add to that an internship at Zac Posen, a boyfriend with a designer dad (her main squeeze is Ralph Lauren's son) and the success of the popular FEED bags she designed to benefit the U.N.'s World Food Program, and it looks like Ms. Bush has the chops to make her ready-to-wear sustainable fabrics line a hit.

    Astrid Stawiarz, Getty Images

    Celeb: Eva Mendes
    Fashion Line: Vida for Macy's
Qualifications: Calvin Klein's latest controversial ad campaigns features a naked Eva Mendes rolling around on a bed, so perhaps her new venture isn't really all that surprising. The actress and her boyfriend, film producer George Augusto, are launching a collection of sheets and comforters. While neither has any design background, we're betting the betting the lovebirds know how to make a cozy nest.

    AFP/Getty Images

    Celeb: Mischa Barton
Fashion Line: Mischa Barton for Stacey Lapidus
Qualifications:The former O.C. star gets more ink these days for her hair accessories than her acting jobs so maybe this is a brilliant career move: She's coming out with a line of headbands made from a wide array of materials including silk, feathers and crystals, ranging in price from $40-$200.

    Astrid Stawiarz, Getty Images

    Celeb: Janet Jackson
    Fashion Line:Pleasure Principle
Qualifications:Named after her 1987 hit, the fancy pants (and matching bras) will all retail for under $40. "There's something for every woman, and that's very important to us," Jackson says. "I've always hated when lingerie is uncomfortable, so the fit and comfort was key." Nothing nasty about that, Miss Jackson.

Recession Takes a Bite Out of Puma

Filed under: Stores We Love, Style in the News

Geeky pair of Puma high topsWe're struggling to make sense out of this one. Earlier this week, Puma sportswear announced that its net-earnings in the 4th quarter were down 78.8%. Ouch. That surprises us because: a.) dude, we freakin' love Puma's geeky shoes, and b.) labels on the mid-lower end seem to be the only ones doing any business these days. Apparently, any brand that hasn't hammered out a distribution deal with Wal-Mart is totally screwed.

Fall 2009 Fashion Week: Backstage Beauty at Christian Siriano

Filed under: Cosmetics, Fashion Week, Beauty Tips, Hair Cut and Style

SHOW:
Christian Siriano
MAKEUP: Polly Osmond for Victoria's Secret Beauty
HAIR: Jon Reyman, Artistic Director for Aveda
BEAUTY SNAPSHOT: Walk like an Egyptian in modern day Cleopatra-style.

THE SCOOP: If you're wondering what ever happened to the most flamboyant (and, in our opinion, most talented) winner of Project Runway, look no further. Christian Siriano's fierce Fall runway show was full of attitude and glamour - a hot mess, in a good way. Backstage, models were made to look like modern Cleopatra's to echo the chainmail fringe they'd be wearing on the runway. "We wanted an Egyptian feel without being too literal," said makeup artist Polly Osmond. "Christian was really into gold lips." Osmond used heavy black liner on the bottom lids to create a Cleopatra-esqe shape, with gold shadow on the upper lids. For hair, Jon Reyman created a modified ponytail chignon to round out the Pharaoh inspiration. "We wanted a hair style that's bold, geometric, sculpted and strong." The squared-off style he created could seduce any Caesar.

GET THE LOOK - MAKEUP: Victoria's Secret Very Sexy Silky Shadow in Champagne, Victoria's Secret Very Sexy Eyeliner in Black Velvet, Victoria's Secret Beauty Lipstick in Wet, (gold pigment on lips was created especially for the show).

GET THE LOOK - HAIR: Part hair in center and pull it back in a tight ponytail, applying Aveda Smooth Infusion Style-Prep Smoother for mold-ability and shine. Twist it down into a horizontal chignon for a strong rectangular shape, tuck the bottom under and pin it.

Christian Siriano maternity - Fierce for Moody Mamas

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Dresses

Who says maternity clothes have to be bland and uninteresting? Not Christian Siriano, that's for sure -- the designer is planning a range for pregnant women, called Fierce for Moody Mamas by Christian Siriano, due out Spring 2009.

Moody Mamas has some seriously stylish maternity wear already -- from tanks with a sparkly message (It's a girl!) to cozy cashmere wraps made for two, they have moms-to-be fashionably covered. It's no surprise, really -- Christian is friends with the Moody Mamas founders. Still, it looks like Christian's Fierce line will be a perfect addition.

Calling all you fierce-haired Christian Siriano fans

Filed under: Style in the News, Hair Care, Celebrities with Style, Contests & Giveaways

Do you miss "Project Runway" Season 4 winner Christian Siriano? Perhaps you emulate his "edgy" hair and think, if only you could meet he'd see that you're the fiercest of them all. Maybe you just wish he could apply his mean, judgey little epitaphs to you.

If you're this kind of masochist, do we have a contest for you.

Sponsored by TRESemmé, the contest offers you a chance to upload a photo of your "fiercest" hairstyle. The entries are judged by Christian Siriano (a.k.a. Ferocia Coutura) and Jeanie Syfu, the TRESemmé lead stylist on Project Runway.

Oh, to be a fly on the wall during that evaluation. If an angel dies every time Christian utters "hot tranny mess" then heaven will be empty by the time he gets through the submissions.

Of course, relative to the risk of being ridiculed, the prizes are awesome. A custom design from Christian Siriano and a two-night, all-expenses paid trip for two to New York City. And even though as the winner, one would assume that you already look pretty good, as part of the prize you and your guest will also get a hair makeover to match your new outfit.

So are you game? More importantly, are you fierce? All the details here. Entries are due before August 25th. Good luck!

Christian Siriano's collection available at Bluefly

Filed under: Style in the News, Daily Obsession

Christian Siriano's fierce designs are now available for the masses exclusively at Bluefly.com! And, it's very much what you'd expect -- black, shiny, and tight, with some funky details.

What you might not expect is the discount -- 20% off! That makes the gold silk 'Red Carpet' shift dress $325 and brings the black cotton 'Posh' puff sleeve blouse down to $590. Okay, so maybe those prices don't exactly make the pieces affordable for everyone, but the collection is still selling really quickly -- some items have already sold out!

Christian Siriano: Now outfitting virtual clients

In what could be one of the weirdest designer collaborations since streetwear brand Supreme hook-ed up with Kermit the frog, Project Runway season four winner Christian Siriano will be designing a line of prom dresses for a virtual community.

Um, yeah.

Puma taps Christian Siriano

Oh, yes! Our baby Christian Siriano is on fire, ladies and gentlemen.

Since taking home the grand prize two months ago, the Project Runway season four winner has created several "major" ensembles for Victoria Beckham, outfitted Kimberly Locke for an American Idol performance, and now the chic little man has been tapped to create a 15-piece collection for Puma.

Project Runway's Christian continues world domination

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

ChristianAfter Christian Siriano won the latest season of Project Runway, he has been absolutely everywhere, from other Bravo shows to an Amy Poehler impression on Saturday Night Live. The only thing more popular than his crazy hair has been his catchphrase: "Fierce!" Sure, Tyra Banks may have brought it to the scene on America's Next Top Model, but Christian was the one who made it work (pretend I just snapped right there).

Well, now it has been announced that Christian will be presenting "Fierce Fashion Awards" at the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards. I don't really know how many Nickelodeon viewers also watched PR, seeing as how they're probably busy checking out Zoey 101 or Spongebob Squarepants all day and in bed by 10PM, when PR comes on. That said, it might be good to have an actually stylish icon leading the kids away from that mess Hannah Montana.

SNL offers a fierce parody

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

Remember that show Project Runway? I know, it was so last week, but SNL isn't nearly as timely as it once was- or funny, but that's for a different post.

They did hit Project Runway winner Christian Siriano square on the head with this skit from last Saturday night (yeah, we're not timely either, go figure). Don't worry, that little hot mess wasn't hurt. His hair is like a helmet, a big, dead rooster helmet.

The sketch is a spin on Christian's future with Bravo and the increasingly muddled line between the genres of reality TV. Yes, sadly, there are now genres of reality TV.

Amy Poehler was fierce, wasn't she? Amy Adams looked a little tranny as Heidi Klum, but those are big heels to fill. Tim Gunn as himself was a hot mess.

I know, it wasn't really Tim Gunn. Were you worried?

Project Runway: We've got a winner

Filed under: Runway Trends, Style in the News, Clothing, Dresses

If you live via your TiVo then this may be a spoiler. Immediately turn away from your computer, fire up the DVR and catch up with the world of the living. Return. Resume.

Fierce. That's what the winner is this year, Mr. Christian Siriano, fierce. He's also young, at 22-years-old Christian is the youngest winner EVAH! That's right, in the whole history of historic Project Runway seasons there has never been anyone getting this professional boost so early in their respective career. Fierce, indeed.

Some say that Christian gave away the winner a couple of weeks ago when the remaining cast members were on Regis & Kelly. The show was finished taping at that time, but the episodes had yet to run and the designers were sworn to double-secret, to the grave, zip it silence. Christian, being fierce, made a remark that viewers jumped on as a hint to his victory. Turns out they were right.

Here is Christian now, he's officially outed as the winner and returns to visit Regis & Kelly once more. This time he can say whatever he wants.

Congratulations, Christian.
