Wardrobe by Laurel and Hardy?

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

Product placement in the film industry has become so commonplace that most of us don't even notice when a Hermes Birkin bag or a Chanel dress is paraded across the screen.

But that hasn't always been the case. In the early days of Hollywood, many stars were required to provide their own costumes. A recent charity auction held by 20th Century Fox revealed a rather unusual contract agreement between the studio and comedy legends Laurel and Hardy. In addition to the standard grooming codes of the day, the actors were also required to furnish their own wardrobes.

I guess that explains why the Laurel and Hardy are better known for their routines than for their on-screen outfits.

Will there finally be a Sex in the City movie?

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

When Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha bid adieu to the small-screen in 2004, it seemed clear that we would never again indulge in our favorite fictitious New Yorkers. Shortly after the series finale, there was some talk of a Sex and the City movie, but that soon dissolved once it was clear that Kim Cattrall had no interested in working on the project. (I hear she and SJP never really got along.)

According to a report in OK! magazine, there is a renewed interest in the film version of the original HBO series. A studio insider says that all four women are available to sign on to the project. Obviously, there is much to be negotiated, but I'm hopeful that the movie will work out. I've missed those girls, and given what they've been individually involved with over the past two years (SJP in bad rom-coms; Cattrall and her cheesy sex books; Kristin Davis and her makeup ads; Cynthia Nixon and her "return to the stage."), I'd imagine they've missed us too.

Is Bruno ready for his close-up?

Filed under: Style in the News, Men, Celebrities with Style

With the Borat movie scheduled to hit theaters in early November, rumors have already started to fly about the possibility of a feature film starring another Sacha Baron Cohen alter ego. This time, instead of following around a reporter in a bad suit from Kazakhstan, the film will center around the character of Bruno, a wildly flamboyant fashion reporter from Austria. Bruno, who calls himself the "Voice of Austrian youth TV," wows audiences with his campy, fashion show shenanigans and his embarassingly indulgent interviews with designers and models.

Universal Pictures has just secured the rights to produce this film for $42.5 million. Considering that this film will probably consist of crashed fashion shows and interviews with C-list celebrities, $42.5 million seems pretty steep. But then again, who I am to say "Ich don't think so!" to the Bruno movie?

Film's best suit

Filed under: Style in the News, Men, Celebrities with Style

GQ Magazine recently named the three-button suit worn by Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock's 1959 thriller "North by Northwest" as the best suit in film history. The ventless, tailored suit has been copied countless times by film actors (Tom Cruise in "Collateral" and Ben Affleck in "Paycheck") and designers alike. I'm happy to see that the best suit in film history is a gray suit, versus say, the black suit that Marcello Mastroianni wore in the film "8 1/2". Why? Well, if that particular suit was the greatest suit in film history, I think that men would be mislead into thinking that they should start wearing black suits. Black suits are for funerals, my friends. Gray suits -- and brown and blue -- are for everything else.

Dress yourself like Cary Grant

Filed under: Style in the News, Men, Celebrities with Style

According to a survey in the Daily Record, actor Cary Grant was recently named the smoothest celebrity of all time. Not one to argue with the sound wisdom of the masses, I thought it would be fun to take a look at the life and style of Cary Grant. I'm quite fond of the actor, and I really think that men nowadays could learn something from the unstoppable Mr. Grant.

Here's handsome Cary starring with Grace Kelly in To Catch a Thief. As you can, see, he is rocking a very jaunty ascot. I'm not recommending the ascot for every guy out there, but I do think, in certain situations -- of which riding in a hot convertible with Grace Kelly is one of them -- an ascot is absolutely called for. In which case, I'd recommend the dashing green plaid Forzieri ascot.

Now I know that Hollywood men nowadays feel great deal of pressure to play around with the traditional tuxedo, and that's fine, especially if you are say, Andre 3000 or Johnny Depp. But there is a lot to be said for leaving good enough alone, and I think that Cary Grant certainly proves that point. Even if you don't think you would have an occassion to wear it more than once or twice a year, a tuxedo is a great investment. And believe it or not, you can get one for less than $200.

Here's Cary sporting a very fetching striped tie matched with a white shirt and a tweed suit. Even though the suit and the top seem a little ho-hum, the bold graphic pattern on the tie immediately suggests that the wearer is confident and smart, but most importantly doesn't take himself too seriously. Here's a more modern version of this classic tie.

Cary Grant was always a man that other men respected and women adored, and I dare say that had something to do with his impeccable style. (The dashing million dollar grin probably didn't hurt either...)

Style in the year 2020: flashy lights?

philips design probe program skinMovies from 'Blade Runner' to 'Minority Report' have tried to predict the future of styles. And who knows, maybe mini-skirts will be back in fashion when the 23rd century rolls around... But Philips, the company currently showing off these amazing LED-based fabrics, predicts flashy, emoting fabrics will be all the rage in 2020. Witness their Design Probe program: SKIN. From what I can tell, it's a futuristic version of the mood ring, designed to be worn all over and respond to your emotional state. What's next? Maybe you'll be able to show what websites your thinking about on your t-shirts. Or maybe that is a very bad idea...

See Tom in his underwear

Filed under: Swimwear and Lingerie, Celebrities with Style

Remember back in 1983 when Tom Cruise was just a cute, doe-eyed actor with a lot of promise?

Over the last few years, we've watched our dear sweet Tommy turn from one of Hollywood's hottest men to one of Hollywood's hottest PR disasters (baby Suri, the Oprah coach, the thing with Brooke Shields, the time he slugged that journalist, plus those creepy little man-bangs he had when he was out promoting Mission Impossible III.... Will it ever end?)

On this, Styledash's first "Sexy Underwear Friday," I would like to remind everyone of a better time, a time when Tom Cruise wasn't crazy, the studios loved him and every girl worth her salt had a major crush on the him and those hot little tighty-whiteys.

Those were the days, weren't they?

Kate and Sienna are no Vivien

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

For anyone out there who is a little sick of the Brit-pixie duo, Sienna Miller and Kate Moss, I have good news. While Miller/Moss star is on the rise, a recent poll revealed that it hasn't quite touched that of the lovely Vivien Leigh. BBC News' Weekend Magazine reported that when asked, the majority of those surveyed cited Vivien Leigh as the most beautiful British woman of all time. Leigh, who many will know from her famous role as Southern Belle, Scarlett O'Hara in the epic film Gone with the Wind, was known for her jet black hair and vivid green eyes.

What do you think -- are Kate and Sienna no Vivien? And, "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn" is not an acceptable answer!
