Steampunk jewelry by Rivkasmom blends the future and the past

Filed under: Accessories, Style in the News, Men, Daily Obsession

Steampunk is a counter-intuitive sci-fi concept. It's about the future, but set in the past, usually Victorian era England. The technology is pre-digital and steam-powered, but it's also quite modern and computer-driven. Analog computers, that is, that float over cities on dirigibles. See? Confusing. Let's stick to the aesthetics of it.

If you enjoyed the look of City of Lost Children, Van Helsing, Howl's Moving Castle or Lemony Snicket, then you like steampunk. One of the most distinctive visual characteristics is a quasi-Victorian mechanism, with lots of polished brass and clockworks.

Interested? Well, before you pull out the superglue and renovate your laptop, start by decorating yourself with some mechanically beautiful necklaces, cufflinks, earrings and brooches from Rivkasmom on Etsy. They really capture the essence of steampunk, with clocks, trains, balloons, and so much shiny brass! The items are all handmade, original designs, and one of a kind, so if you see something you like in the gallery, rush over to Etsy before some steampunk beats you to it!

Seven Days of Style: to help you count down

Filed under: Holiday Style, Haute Home, Accessories

seven days of telling timeIt's that time of year when all we do is stare at the clock, waiting for the moment when the big and little hand meet at the top to usher in the New Year. To help you keep pace in style, whether you're sitting comfortably at home in front of the TV or out under the stars on your fourth glass of Champagne, here are seven clocks and watches.

Sunday - For the home, we like to go a little natural, a little high tech. The LED clock is a block of wood with LED lights layered under the veneer. When the clock is on, it glows red. If you're faced with a deadline and don't want to know how close it is, turn the clock off and it's a lovely decorative block of wood. Available for $150 at Uncommon Goods.

Monday - If watches aren't quite your thing -- whether because they're too bulky or get in the way when you're trying to bang out a hundred posts while blogging (oh, that's just me) -- then you might still be able to tell time without having to ask around. The Tempo Time Tag is a tiny little tag that does nothing else but display the time. You can attach it anywhere, so it works to clip onto your shirtsleeves (men), or your handbag (ladies).
