Filed under: Stores We Love, Shoes, Steals and Deals

Swedish Clog StilettosWe recently discovered the vintage (eqsue) glories of online boutique Ruche. Well, on closer look, we realized we were totally overlooking the shoes! They have quirky, cool, "oh my god where did you get those" shoes, mostly for well under $50.

"Vintage Shoes" - Book Review

vintage shoes by caroline coxIf we could marry a book and keep it by our side for all eternity, it would be this book: Vintage Shoes: Collecting and Wearing 20th Century Designer Footwear, by Caroline Cox, with a forward from shoe god Christian Louboutin.

Team USA gets Ralph Lauren, New Zealand gets Crocs

Can you think of anything more unfair? As we've already told you, Team USA will be sporting Ralph Lauren for the opening ceremony at the Beijing Olympics, and the New Zealand Olympians will be schlumping around in an official uniform that includes Crocs.

The women will be wearing the sueded "Alice" style for the opening ceremony, and then all the athletes will wear the ever-popular Beach model. The kicker with this is that Olympic chef de mission Dave Currie said the shoes would be "very stylish."

Crocs cause "cloud of lightning"

Crocs, the brightly colored plastic clogs you see on seemingly everyone these days, have been banned from a Swedish hospital because they could turn staff who wear them into "a cloud of lightning."

Seriously. Apparently the shoes generate a lot of static electricity, which causes medical equipment to malfunction, and could, if they generated a big enough charge, harm staff.

Take this as a warning. You may think you look "funky" and "fun" in your orange and purple footwear, but in fact, you just look silly. Now we learn that, depending on where you work, the clogs might turn you into a walking lightning rod.

So please, please, do us all a favor, and wear something else.

Stylish Crocs

I admit, I've had my eye on a pair of Croc clogs for a while now. But something has been preventing me from purchasing a pair. Sure, the soles look squishy and ergonomic and the colors are delightfully vivid -- yet their virtues don't seem to outweigh their vices.

Crocs, I suppose, are just a little too cloggy for me.

But Croc ballet slippers might just work. The so-called "Prima Crocs" are still foot-friendly and brightly colored (black, fuchsia, silver and gold), but unlike their older brother -- the beach -- these round-toed flats might actually flatter my legs.

The most knocked-off shoe this year - Newton

kors by michael kors newton wedgeSure, there are knock-offs all the time, but I'm not talking about the "Frauda" handbags for $20 you can get in downtown LA. I'm talking about the copy of a design from a higher-end designer to the masses.

In shoes, I have not seen any shoe design more knocked off than the peep-toe wedge "Newton" from KORS by Michael Kors, which I lovelovelove. The KORS shoe is $189, and at first, I thought the Steve Madden knock-off "Cristan" for $90 was a decent copy, especially since they also come in leopard-print. Then along come the mass designers making copies for as low as $30. Wow.

However, I have seen the knock-offs and they are not pretty. Until XOXO and Two Lips get their stuff together, go for the original.

Clogs will never be sexy to me - never!

Filed under: Accessories, Shoes, Celebrity Fashion Mistakes

clogsI don't care what you say, a clog is a clog. Even the word "clog" screams utterly frumpy librarian to me (no offense to the librarians out there, I just had a really bad one in grade school).

Clogs are what cute eight year old Dutch children with rosy cheeks wear. Clogs are the giant wooden shoes that fly through the air at Disneyland and make you throw up. Clogs are those ridiculous neon Caltrans highway worker orange rubber things that Mario Batali plods through the streets of Roma in. Clogs, I'm sorry, will never be sexy to me.

So I have no idea why show designers think that adding height to the heel and few flashy accents will make them any better. Stuart Weitzman has clogs for the fall season for over $200.

Now it's just an expensive pair of clogs.
