Pop with pastel - Tip of the day!

Filed under: Style Tip of the Day

The season's best jackets come in shades of pastel pink, yellow, green and blue. Pastel outerwear gives a season known for its dark palettes some lightness. They also make even the bulkiest of jackets we wear to keep warm a little more feminine. Plus they are the perfect pop of color against an office party LBD or everyday office attire (that means you black pants suit!).

Check out some of our favorite pastel coats that are sure to liven up an otherwise dreary winter.

Flatter Your Figure - Stay warm and look hot in these winter coats

Filed under: Clothing, Flatter Your Figure

winter coatIn the coming weeks and months, most of us will need to start bundling up before heading outdoors. And while that might cause flashbacks to snowpants and earmuffs for some of you, keep in mind that it is possible to stay warm in the freezing weather without looking like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, regardless of what your body looks like beneath your coat.

eBay WTF Friday Five

Third grade teacher gone badThis week, let's take a moment to celebrate the delightfully heinous crimes against denim witnessed on eBay. We've already brought you:

Bad Jean Jacket #1
Bad Jean Jacket #2
& Bad Jean Jacket #3

Here are #4-8, starting with this one.

A patch on your jean jacket is sort of sweet, in an "I was once a girl/boy scout and I dig patches" kind of way. This many patches? Batdung crazy.

This jacket includes patches such as:

Madrid
American Indian guy
American Indian guy #2
Ladybug
Bear with hat on
Giraffe
Elephant
Rag doll
Rainbow
French weathervane
Skull

Emma Thompson - Overcoat StyleFoul!

Oh, it hurts us to do this. It really does. We love Emma Thompson -- she's on our list of people we'd have lunch with if we could have lunch with anyone in the world. She's talented and funny and beautiful. And, unfortunately, at the UK premiere of Brideshead Revisted, she was badly dressed in a shapeless, shiny coat.

eBay WTF of the Day: Bad jean jacket #2

WTF? This is so obviously wrong.

It's like this. The jacket was too long so they decided to cut it. Then, while they got ready to cut it, they had seven martinis and decided it would be really funny if they just cut some of it off. We can just see this being a good idea at like, 3am:

"Yeah, you know...like coattails...but on the sides...of this denim jacket...with three quarter sleeves and an awkward, sideways belly-flap."

But that idea should have been trumped in the morning.

TK Maxx pulls knife-weilding jacket from shelves

Filed under: Style in the News

British retailer TK Maxx (no, it's not a typo -- it's the UK version of TJ Maxx in the States) got a little more than it bargained for with Swiss-branded coat it stocked -- the coat came with a concealed knife as a promotional gift. A chain on the inside of the coat leads to a pocket, and inside the pocket hides a knife with a two-and-a-half-inch blade (see a picture here).

eBay WTF of the Day: Leather, fox, and failure

Here we are, a crime against leather and foxes alike.

Places fox fur does not belong:

The ocean.
Guernsey (there are no foxes on the isle of Guernsey).
All over a leather jacket. WTF?

It's like someone took a sort of ugly leather jacket and decided to "improve" it by putting a fox vest over it.

eBay WTF of the Day: Bad jean jacket #1

Totally unjustifiable.
It must be fall. Get out your bad jean jackets.

Here, on sale from Cerry5354, we have a green satin disaster. This is like a castoff from that scene in Return to Oz when Dorothy had to touch everything that was green to bring Oz back to life or something, I don't know, I was only half watching by that point because that Rock dude really freaked my shiz out. And the flying moose box. WTF, moose box? Anyway, all the stuff that was green in that scene was like, really awkwardly and sort of aggressively green. Like this jacket.

Also, can we take a moment to appreciate the fact that Dorothy was played by Fairuza Balk? Thanks.

Light jackets to take you into fall

Fall weather always provides a bit of a challenge. The weather starts out chilly, but if you dress for that, you could be sweating in the sun by late afternoon. The solution is, of course, to dress in layers, but we can't abide wearing just any old jacket for warmth -- it needs to add something to our outfit, or it's staying in the closet.

The thing is, a great light jacket can be a great addition to your wardrobe. Not only will it serve the purpose of warding off those cool autumn breezes, but it can add color, texture, and shape to your ensemble. The trick is finding the right jacket for you.

Did Diablo Cody make leopard skin jump the shark?

We're right there with Kristen Seymour on loving a bit of leopard. And Diablo Cody is a full on inspiration to us lady writers -- you will find zero hating round these parts.

But...

Ever since the Diablo Cody awards ceremony (over) exposure tour, leopard skin, either as an outfit theme or accent, seems a bit...tired.

Love your pet? Wear him!

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing

I have two dogs and I love them like they're my kids (other than the whole sticking them in a crate thing -- I hear you're not supposed to do that with human children). However, when I saw the following headline, I thought that maybe, just maybe, this couple had taken things a little too far:

Hair of the dog: The animal lovers who turned their dead pets' coats into woolly jumpers.

Thanks for that, Daily Mail.

But, actually, it's not as creepy as it sounds. Beth and Brian Willis learned from their breeder that their white Samoyed's fur makes great clothing, so while the dog was still alive, they had a sweater knitted from the fur she had shed. It's apparently extremely warm and durable and softer than alpaca. They went on to have clothing knitted from their other dog's fur, too -- I'm sure she was feeling left out.

According to the article, making clothing from the fur of long-haired dogs is fairly common (Did you know that? I didn't!). I guess it makes sense -- instead of clogging up your vacuum with dog hair, create some furry fashion. I'm just not sure I'm ready to wear my pooches in any form, no matter how cozy it might be. How about you?

How to work a cape like Posh, not Superman (or Brooke Shields)

Filed under: Clothing, Celebrities with Style

Every year, as spring approaches, my eyes start wandering toward the less bulky items in my closet. I'm tired of my sweaters, done with scarves, and so over jackets. Fortunately, I live in Florida, so there are plenty of days where I can wear a kicky dress and cardi and be plenty warm. But what about those of you living in colder climates? What can be done?

Never fear, Posh is here! In a cape!

As Mrs. Beckham shows us (and as Brooke Shields and Lucy Liu fail to show us), a cape can be a fabulously chic way to ward off the winter chill when you just can't bare to wear your winter coat for another day. However, it can also backfire horribly. Here's how you can pull off Posh's look and keep your cape from becoming fashion kryptonite:

Styles that Stick: The trench coat

Filed under: Clothing, Vintage and Retro

TrenchcoatAhh, the trench coat. One of the most beautifully classic pieces of outerwear. Just think of the rain-soaked kiss of Audrey Hepburn's Breakfast at Tiffany's, or the typical super-mistress of espionage, and you can get the full effect of this lovely coat. Although the trench is not necessarily a wardrobe staple, it has managed to stand the test of time, so having one on-hand in the closet is never going to be a bad thing.

When shopping for a trench coat, it is impossible to go wrong with Burberry, since the company was the first to come up with the coat, originally intending it as a raincoat for army officers. However, when I say it's "impossible to go wrong with Burberry", I'm assuming that everyone has at least $1500 to spend per coat. For those that don't have that sort of pocket change, the trench is popular enough to be available in stores everywhere... Well, it will be available everywhere once the sweltering hot Summer is over. As with any coat, the fit of a trench coat is very important. The structured lines can be very flattering, as long as the size is perfect against the body. One size too big, and the coat can look like a lumpy coat, emphasizing all the wrong parts.

And for those of you who are daring enough to stray from the traditional beige and black, many designers have come up with brighter colors to liven up the rainiest of days. Burberry even has a stunning tweed trench with their famous check pattern, but, again, don't bother unless you have at least $1500 to spare.
