Bebe, Cocktail DressCocktail attire. These two little words can be interpreted so many different ways. We think the best way to go is with a stop-them-dead-in-their-tracks dress polished off with sparkling, metallic heels and big, bold, of-the-moment jewelry. Now that's how you do cocktail.

One Dress, Many Looks - Black on Black

We've been showing you ways to stretch your glamour dollars by accessorizing that little black dress that's already hanging in your closet. Don't you love how adding a little sparkle or a bit of golden warmth can take you LBD to the next level?

Today's look is anything but basic: Black on black (with a touch of color!) will add a lot of style to your dress, and as an added bonus the accessories will match with everything else that's in your closet. That's what we call a win-win.

Just because your accessories are black doesn't meant that they need to be boring. In fact, the key to pulling off this monochromatic look is to find accessories that pop out on their own - maybe it's the shape, or the size. For example, this organza headwrap or these black earrings will certainly pop.

Have fun accessorizing!

Dress of the day - Jay Godfrey Cotton Candy cocktail mini

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

A sweet as candy slip of a dress by Jay Godfrey this one is for the woman in her twenties (we're not saying that you actually have to be in twenties, a youthful spirit will suffice) - this dress is all flirtatious girlish fun, literally tied up with a big black bow for a night out on the town.

The loose A-line and one-shoulder styling make this an easy option for many body types. Pair it with black heels and we guarantee those poor boys won't know what hit them.

Dress of the day - Anne Klein stretch satin sheath in "Imperial"

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

Stand out in a sea of black and red cocktail dresses in this gorgeous plum sheath by Anne Klein - it's classy and touchably soft in delicious stretch satin. You might think that you'll need to pull on the Spanx to feel comfortable in this, but the dress is actually engineered to make the most of what you have:
  • The wide band at the waist will give you a fabulous hourglass shape, and will avoid the dreaded muffin top created when the waist line is too low.
  • The crossover neckline will give you a nice lift, if you know what we mean.
  • The slim skirt ends right above the knee, covering the thighs but letting you show off those calves.
To top it off, the dress is fully lined to help camouflage any errant bulges. You can wear this dress - we promise.

$178 at Nordstrom

Dress of the Day: Embroidered Bustier Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

cynthia steffe black embroidered lace bustier dressJust a few more days, kitten, until you step out of your limo, sashay up the red carpet, and make your grand entrance as the belle of the New Year's Eve Ball.

Or maybe you're driving yourself.

And maybe the only red carpet is the wine-stained one at your friend's apartment.

Whatever the case, you will be the belle of the ball in your own world in Cynthia Steffe's Embroidered Bustier Dress. The strapless dress with a pleated empire waist means you will be comfortable, not having to suck it in all night. The bustier features soft ruching over a bodice that has boning for support and shaping. The highlight, of course, is the embroidered lace skirt, which falls a modest 19" to the knees.

Spray your exposed skin with some Sally Hansen AirBrush for legs (use it on your bare shoulders, too), slip into a pair of skyhigh stiletto pumps (sandals are too cold for January), and grab your black silk clutch.

Cynthis Steffe's Embroidered Bustier Dress is $305 at Saks. It is on sale for $180.

Dress of the Day: Chetta B Shutter-Pleated Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

chetta b shutter pleated dressIt's Saturday morning. Do you know what you're wearing tonight?

Let's hope so, but just in case you still don't have a thing, not a single thing (!) to wear to that cocktail party tonight, head over to Neiman Marcus and pick up Chetta B.'s Shutter-Pleated Dress in Champagne. I have never heard the term "shutter-pleated," but it sounds far more interesting than what it actually appears to be, layers upon layers of flat ruffles. The Shutter-Pleated dress is made from 100% silk crepe, and aside from the flirty shutter pleats, features an illusion V neckline -- very flattering. Very sexy. Since the dress is a Champagne color, make sure you exfoliate all over so that your winter-white skin sparkles against the light color. I'd go with sassy gold sandals, and a teeny tiny gold box clutch.

The Chetta B. Shutter-Pleat Dress is $390 at Neiman Marcus.

Dress of the Day: BCBG Strapless Taffeta with Bow

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

bcbg max azria dtrapless taffeta cocktail dressI am guessing that this weekend, you are twirling off to a casual get-together with work friends tonight, then off to a real Holiday party Saturday night with your beau. It might be a little late to figre out what to do for tonight, but for tomorrow, if tomorrow's fete is a cocktail party, the Strapless Tafetta Cocktail Dress by Max Azria BCBG might fit the bill. Sky-high patentn leather stiletto pumps, diamond and pearl earrings, and a sparkly little clutch will complete the outfit.

The dress has an empire waist that is highlighted with what is the most fetching part of the dress: a contrasting ivory bow. The hemline falls gracefully to the knee, and the back is emebellished with a "train." It sounds a tad bit bridesmaid-y, but it's definitely better than wearing that hot pink chiffon number you had to wear this summer for your girlfriend's wedding.

The strapless tafetta dress is $398 at Nordstrom.

Maternity evening dresses so you're not a party pooper

Filed under: Holiday Style, Clothing, Dresses, Kids and Babies

black maternity dress for eveningOur friends over at Blogging Baby remind us that just because a woman is pregnant doesn't mean she has to stay at home in maternity sweatpants while everyone else is out partying this Holiday season. They have found three dresses, all of them black, naturally, that are great for the cocktail partying (well, maybe not quite the cocktail part) mama-to-be: strappy empire dress by Liz Lange at Target, strapless lace dress at Due Maternity by Maternal America, and black formal maternity dress at Nicole Maternity Wholesale.

So ladies, don't let a bit of a belly bulge keep you at home. At least, don't let the availability of cute maternity evening wear be the reason you stay home. If you feel like staying home and watching a DVD laying in the fetal position on the floor, well that's another story.

Dress of they Day: Isaac Mizrahi Stretch Lace Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

isaac mizrahi black lace stretch dress at targetNow that we've gotten past Thanksgiving, it's time to think about the next big event. Whatever cultural tradition you celebrate, you know that some time during the month of December, there's going to be a Holiday party. Over the next few weeks, look out for our Dresses of the Day to help you put together the perfect party outfit.

Since it's still November, we might not wuite want to break out the shiny satin and jeweled tones (though there scertainly isn't anything wrong with that). For a small cocktail gathering on a Saturday, the Stretch Lace dress by Isaac Mizrahi is perfect. The dress has a classic shape with lady-like knee-length shirt and high, round neckline, but adds a subtle flirtatiousness because it's form-fitting and looks like sheer black lace. The dress is, however, lined with a 100% polyester nude slip. If you're fancy, strappy black sandals will go with the detail of the lace, but don't be afraid to rock the fierce pointed toe stilleto pumps.

Mizrahi's Stretch Lace Dress is $59.99 at Target.
