DIY Hair Color, Yay or Nay - Tip of the Day!

Filed under: Hair Care, Style Tip of the Day

hair colorWe were lucky enough to score an interview with some lovely ladies, Nikki and Riawna, from the Ken Paves Salon in Hollywood. Between the two of them, they have tons of experience, an amazing knowledge bank on the topic, and a crazy client list to boot (think Lindsay Lohan, Colin Farrell, and Eva Longoria). So I rolled what we got from these two into a week's worth of tips so you can look like you just walked out of the Ken Paves Salon.

In the wake of the recession many of us are turning to at-home color to keep up with our hair maintenance on a dime. But Riawna and Nikki say no way! "Nine times out of ten it doesn't work," Riawna says. "We just don't recommend it. Too many times women have damaged their own hair doing it." And it's not just a marketing ploy to get you into the salon. Here's why you should either not color your hair period or splurge on a trip to the salon.

UGGs Go Pastel for Spring

UGGsSo, we were pretty much done with UGGs, especially when paired with the little miniskirts. After all, if it's cold enough to necessitate super warm, thick boots, it's too cold to bare your legs to just below the hoo-ha. However, we're finding ourselves strangely drawn to the new UGG Cardy Crochet Boots.

Tights Take the Chill Off

Filed under: Accessories, Swimwear and Lingerie

Tights for Everyone!

Have you noticed? Tights are everywhere this fall, and we couldn't be happier. It's getting cold out there!

The freshest way to wear tights is to think of them as an accessory. That means that you're free to wear a contrasting color - there's no need to try to match your legs to your shoes. We're partial to mustard and plum-colored tights because they bring a shot of seasonal color and are surprisingly easy to wear.

If you want to make your legs look longer (a look that never, ever goes out of style) then tights are also for you. Look for opaque solids that match your shoes, thus elongating the leg, or wear ribbed tights. The subtle vertical ribbing will create an optical illusion that will make your legs look like they go all the way up to there.

Flatter Your Figure - Fab Fall Dresses for Plus Size Babes

Filed under: Dresses, Flatter Your Figure

plus size dressLadies, just because a size eight better describes your shoe size than your dress size, there's no reason you shouldn't be just as fashionable as those lucky enough to have a super high metabolism. Style exists for women of all shapes and sizes, although, admittedly, it is tougher for those who wear plus sizes.

Crazy cravings: Purple Suede Boot Lust

Filed under: Runway Trends, Accessories, Shoes

Seeing purple everywhere for fall has somehow invaded our brain and now we can't stop thinking about purple suede boots.

Even though they are completely impractical for the San Francisco winter rains we are sure to experience, we're so tempted to get a pair to wear on the rare clear day. They are dressy yet can go casual, and make a very definite fashion statement: Fear Not Color On Your Feet!

Up to the knee or gracing our ankles, sky high or in a more moderate medium heel, round, pointy or open-toed, you can find the purple suede boot that is perfect for you.

In the gallery, our top five choices. Now we just have to figure out which ones we can afford. As good as the Jimmy Choos look, at $1,395 it would be the boots or food -- we just can't afford both!

Why aren't you wearing this? A Peace Treaty Rishon Scarf

We are all about the types of accessories that can turn a plain tee and jeans into a true ensemble. Bright colors, patterns, and textures can be a fabulous layer atop simple white cotton, or add some interest beneath a blazer or sweater.

Right now, woven scarves are a great accessory for women of all ages, and we absolutely love this A Peace Treaty Rishon Scarf, available at Shopbop for $110. It's just perfect, just the way it's shown.

Sarah Palin wigs!

Filed under: Accessories, Style in the News, Get the Look, Hair Cut and Style

Now is your chance to put lipstick on a wig (but it's still a wig)! The Sarah Palin wigs and hairstyles are here- finally (McCain's hairstyle will be here soon enough, stupid male pattern baldness). Wigs not recommended for Pit Bulls.

The wigs were no trouble, no trouble at all- in fact they were already in stock. No they weren't leftover Tina Fey costumes (see glasses), but they did have a famous face attached to them.

Would you believe Raquel Welsh?

WigSalon is marketing their Raquel Welsh style wigs as a great Sarah Palin alternative. "Simply bobby pin back the upper layers of the Raquel Welch's new Valentine wig style, which is truly beautiful in it's [sic] own right, and let the longer layers fall freely."

L'Oreal denies Beyonce skin lightening

Filed under: Hair Care, Cosmetics, Celebrities with Style

Recent L'Oreal ads in Elle, Allure, and Essence feature the always fabulous Beyonce, but the ad is garnering a lot of complaints. Why would anybody complain about Beyonce in an ad? She's a knockout, right?

Yes, except her skin looks several shades lighter than it normally does.

The ads for Feria haircolor are, as you might expect, creating a lot of controversy. L'Oreal denies any lightening of the singer's skin, saying, "We highly value our relationship with Ms. Knowles. It is categorically untrue that L'Oreal Paris altered Ms. Knowles' features or skin tone ..."

Why aren't you wearing this? Multicolored Beaded Coil Bracelet

As we've said a million times, the easiest way to wear a trend is to wear it as an accessory. You might not be completely comfortable wearing an entirely yellow outfit, but you might like a bright yellow purse. Or, if you're digging the safari trend but don't want to look like you just got back from one, the right belt or hat can give you the look you want without quite as much commitment.
