Five shoes - cartoon cute

Filed under: Accessories, Shoes, Must Haves

Oh, we know that fall is coming and with it comes the "serious" side of fashion; that it's a time for elegance and adding more sophisticated pieces to the wardrobe. We know it and we love it.

But here's the thing: While we're all for ladylike dressing, we can't help but thumb our nose at authority every once in a while - hence this week's focus on shoes that can only be called, well, childish. Some of the shoes are really just fun and cute as hell, but we also showed you a pair by one of today's hottest designers and a even found a pair that are displayed in a museum. We hope they inspire you to have some fun as well.

Kid shows and adult clothes

Whit Honea is a slacker, a borderline degenerate, and a daydream believer. He's also our resident expert on casual chic. If it's comfortable, and not heinous, he's all over it. He's quite charming, really, i.e., not jerky at all.

We were concerned about Hot Topic after seeing their latest addition, but then we realized that they still had plenty of other lines available and that most of them are pretty cool- or in the case of our featured shirt, yummy.

Holy high-fashion, Batman!

The British label Luella (née Luella Bartley) offered a heroic ready-to-wear collection during the Spring 2008 shows in London. I don't mean to suggest that the line was especially brave; rather, by heroic, I mean, superheroic. And by superheroic, I mean, the clothes had Batman on them. Luella dubbed it "comic book chic" -- whatever that is supposed to mean...

Believe it or not, this is hardly the first time that a cartoon character has struck a pose in high-end fashion. As Jonathon pointed out earlier this year, designers have been on a 'toon kick for a while now, channeling everyone from Charlie Brown to Tweety Bird.

When comics and fashion collide...

James Jean and Paul PopeHonestly, it's probably not that difficult to tell that I'm a complete geek. I mean, come on, I'm a professional blogger for crying out loud. A big part of being a geek is attending comic book conventions. There's nothing quite like being swept away in a crowd of sweaty Stormtroopers and guys who only leave their mother's basement for more Mountain Dew and Fritos. Somehow, fashion made its way into the Baltimore Comic-Con this past weekend.

On Sunday, I attended the super-packed panel featuring illustrator James Jean and comic book artist Paul Pope and I was immediately filled with geeky joy. Not only did the guys share their beautiful new art books, Jean and Pope talked about some sweet upcoming projects.

Jean, who is probably best known as the amazing cover artist for the brilliant comic series Fables, just designed some crazy ads and fabrics (!) for Prada (!!!). He showed the audience the artwork, and it was stunning. The lines are flowing and beautiful and the pieces look huge. The full thing will eventually go on display at Prada's SoHo location, which means I'll have another reason to go to that store, stand outside, and look poor.
