MAKE UP FOR EVER HD

Let's face it. No matter how much we'd like to believe, celebs aren't always red carpet perfect. And with the television industry's recent switch to high-definition, hiding one's imperfections just got even tougher. But thanks to MAKE UP FOR EVER's HD Complexion line – which includes foundations, concealers and a loose powder - stars can look flawless despite the pore-magnifiying zoom effect.

So what does Make Up For Ever's complexion perfectors have that other cosmetic brands don't? It's all about the micro-particles that scatter light to visibly perfect your skin.

"In HD, everything is magnified, including make up. Therefore, formulations need to use microscopic ingredients to create the invisible coverage that is necessary for HD formats," said Dany Sanz, Creator and Artistic Director, MAKE UP FOR EVER. "The HD Complexion line utilizes special micro-particles in each innovative formulation to create make up that is imperceptible onscreen, in photos and in real life!"

At the 51st Annual Grammy Awards, everyone from Cyndi Lauper to Jordin Sparks hit up the Grammy Style Studio to get done up with products from the HD Complexion line. For scenes from the studio, click through the gallery.

5 Best Beauty Finds of 2008

Filed under: Hair Care, Cosmetics, Must Haves, Beauty Tips, Hair Cut and Style

babyliss mini flatiron from beautychoice.comWe see a lot in this job. Lip stuff, nail polish, hair treatments galore. It's hard to stand out in the onslaught of beauty goodness. But every year there are a few products we fall in love with, products we are grateful to know about, and that we'll be using for years to come.

It was a good year, and picking just five to showcase was hard, but when it comes down it, we have a pretty limited repetoire. There are a few items that we have been harping on -- via Twitter, to strangers at Sephora and whipping out on the bus -- non-stop this year:

Dry shampoo
Mini flatiron
timeBalm
Potion 9
Foot lube

In the gallery, we revisit our love for each of them. Once more, with feeling.

Makeover at Bobbi Brown

Filed under: Cosmetics, Skin Care, Get the Look, Beauty Tips

Continuing our quest to bring you the very best makeup and skincare finds, I once again braved the department store makeup counters (this time at Bloomingdale's) to find out what's going on at Bobbi Brown.

At right is the "After" picture; that's me all made-up by adorable Bobbi Brown Beauty Advisor Houston Puryear. She's from Austin.

Read on for the hideous "Before" picture, and for information on how to get the look.

Estee Lauder, put THAT on me!

We saw this display of Estee Lauder's new Signature Blush at Lord & Taylor and got all excited! In particular, we were interested in the two-tone blends in the front row.

I'm always up for something cool, so I asked Estee Lauder to put that bright white and pink shade, second from the left, on me. Read on to see!

Time Balm is...well, it's da Bomb!

We told you about the amazing time Balm -- concealer and anti-wrinkle cream, you can even sleep in it! -- in the post Quick Kit for New Moms. Usually one mention is enough to get it out of our system, but we can't stop talking about this product!

Friends are used to us raving about the latest and greatest, but even they noticed that our evangelism was particularly amped up for time Balm. We keep pulling it out of our bag and forcing friends and strangers to just try it. We even started selling the friend who told us about it.

"I guess I need to go put some on," she said.

"Here, you can use mine," we replied.

The high low high point was the moment in Sephora when we interrupted someone who works there, you know, a make up professional, to say, "No, NO don't get that one, try the lightest color of time Balm, it's called Lighter than Light, it will work much better with her complexion." And then we went to get it for them.

Finally we realized that telling people one at a time was taking too long, and remembered our pulpit here at StyleList blog. So, listen up: this inexpensive ($17) little pot of makeup is magic. Great coverage. Doesn't get all creepy old lady crepey. Layers well under other stuff, like eyeshadow. Easy to use. Lasts forever -- just a dab will do you.

If you're not convinced now, there's nothing else we can do, but at least we tried to save the world from looking tired!

Neutrogena large ultra-soft eye makeup remover pads are gigantic

We've been known to skip that whole "wash your face before going to bed" more than once, despite with the resulting mascara modern art pillows.

Rather than switch to black sheets, we decided to try out these Neutrogena Ultra-Soft Eye Makeup Remover Pads, thinking that a novel product would inspire us, no matter how tired or you know, boozed up we might be.

The first thing we noticed is that the jar is telling the truth. They are both soft and large. Very large. So large that they were awkward to use under our eyes and it was impossible to swipe away wayward flecks of mascara without taking off all of our mascara and under eye concealer and starting over.

There was just more pad than we needed, even to clear off a heavy night of going out makeup. We even considered cutting them in half, to make them last longer and be less wasteful.

They work great, and they are super, super soft on our delicate eyes, but so far they haven't inspired us to be more diligent in our bedtime routine. We'll probably stick with the equally effective, smaller/less wasteful seeming, and less expensive Almay Oil Free Makeup Remover Pads we usually use the morning after.

Tip of the day: To tool or not to tool

Which makeup tools do you need and which can you toss, now that is the question.

Let's take it down to the nitty gritty and see what tools are necessities and what are just excess for the everyday gal.

Lindsay Lohan is getting skinny, and we all know what that means

Uh, oh. America's favorite sapphic starlet is setting off those substance abuse rumors again. Fox News is spreading reports that Linds, "isn't taking care of herself." For the repeat rehabber, that means drugs, or at least partying too much.

Lindsay and her gal-pal Sam Ronson are definitely skinny. And Sam, already not the prettiest girl at the party, works that dark-circle/heroin-pallor-look hard. Either she's spending some hard nights on the town, or she's adamantly trying to prove that superficial stuff, like concealer and blush, is beneath her notice.

We'll be able to judge Lindsay's weight loss for ourselves soon, when she appears in a red bathing suit on an episode of Living Lohan, her sister Ali's horrifying reality show. Let's hope that, if anything, she's taking the Master Cleanse a little too far, and not following the Rachel Zoe horse tranquilizer diet again.

Funny thing: Lindsay's all natural boobs are always the same size, no matter how big or small she gets...now that's a reason to gossip.

Quick Kit: help a new mom feel pretty

Filed under: Cosmetics, Kids and Babies

If anyone deserves a little something to boost her up, it's a new mom. The long nights, interrupted sleep, and crazy hormones drag you down, and those dark circles would make anyone feel less than pretty.

Of course a crying baby means no time for elaborate makeup or beauty rituals. We have lots of friends with babies and they all say the same thing: "Love the baby, hate how tired I look! Help!"

We have just the thing: a 60 second quick kit with our best perk-you-up makeup secret weapons. So small it can fit in the corner of a baby bag, so portable you can pull it out in your car, at the airport or anywhere you need a quick confidence booster.

Stila review: Perfecting concealer

The nice folks at Stila sent us some samples so we could try their products first hand. We spread the bounty across two bloggers, Kristen Seymour and Cat Lincoln, who will share their reactions with you this week.

Stila's Perfecting Concealer is a semi-matte concealer designed to hide "under eye circles, scars, redness, and other imperfections."

We were really excited to try this out because, even after getting a full night's sleep, we tend to have under eye circles, but now that we're no longer 18, some concealers and foundations end up making our smile lines (because we do not have wrinkles -- our face is simply used to smiling and being happy) more obvious.

Got something to hide? Cover FX.

Ideal for covering scars, bruises, burns, tattoos, rashes and any other skin irregularity. It was an evening in March 2008 (yesterday). I was acting in a show where my costume exposed my bare shoulders. I had recently been to yoga and attempted a pose I cannot pronounce or spell. It resulted in bruises; unsightly shoulder bruises and a good leg one, large enough to be seen by the audience. Cue panic.

After some asking around about what people use to cover tattoos and such, I discovered Cover FX at Sephora. I decided to head down to the Soho store and get some help.

The young lady who assisted me matched my skin tone perfectly to some cream foundation (pictured above). The color really is uncanny, and the feel of the makeup is surprisingly lightweight for being very close to opaque. Made from 100% healthy minerals, Cover FX covered up my bruises and made my skin look even smoother than it was in the first place! It even looks good close-up. I would use this on a night out to cover up leg scars, sunburn, and any other area of discolored skin.

I highly recommend Cover FX. I swear they're not paying me to write this. They saved my night.

Drugstore Beauty Queen: Physicians Formula concealer

Filed under: Cosmetics, Steals and Deals

I've always admired Physicians Formula cosmetics. I like its approach towards makeup, especially the concealers and skin correctors. Other beauty companies address problematic skin with heavier coverage or thicker formulas, but PF takes the practical approach of color balancing. By this logic, if you have reddish skin, apply green. If you have bluish circles, apply yellow. Sure, it's not rocket science, but has the old color wheel ever failed you before?

Physicians Formula's latest concealer is the first of its kind -- a cover-up that conceals and treats dark circles with something called Haloxyl. So far, the coverage seems better than all of the drugstore products I've tried before, including an $18 concealer that wouldn't blend probably. At $6.95, you can't go wrong with this product.

Admittedly, it's difficult to figure out what shade you should use just based on the packaging, but that's a drawback of all drugstore makeup. However, if you roughly estimate that most people wear either Natural Light or Medium Beige, you have a good chance of finding the right color.

According to the company, the Circle Rx Circle Control Concealer can diminish dark circles by 70% by Week 2 and up to 90% by Week 4. A 90% reduction is a serious claim, my friends. Either way, I'll let you know how things look by the end of the month.

The greatest makeup tip ever!

Yesterday when I was poking around the Smashbox website, I stumbled across a professional makeup tip that tops all other professional makeup tips! I've mentioned before that my great beauty woe is having dark circles under my eyes that remain no matter how much sleep I get. It's a genetic thing -- my father has them, too. On better days, I consider them "soulful" or even "unique", but to tell you the truth, I'd buy just about any product to get rid of them.

After reading about concealer application on the Smashbox site, I realized that it was possible that part of my problem was not the product but the application. You see, usually, I paint on my concealer in one direction, starting at the corner of my eye, and traveling along occipital ridge (check it: physiology knowledge). Smashbox suggests using a cross-hatch pattern with the concealer brush starting directly under your eye. This morning, I tried the new technique out, and I'll be a monkey's uncle -- it worked!

Oh how I love you my new cross-hatch makeup application technique!
