Cost of a Classic - The White Button Down

white shirtThere are certain items every woman should have in her closet. Some seasons, it might be The Big Thing, and the next its popularity might wane, but she can feel confident that, within just a few years, it'll make its way back into her wardrobe rotation. The white button down shirt is definitely one of these items -- it works beneath sweaters for a preppy look, with a black pencil skirt for a sexy secretary vibe, and with jeans for a laid-back feel.

Cost of a Classic - The Wrap Dress

DVF wrap dressThere aren't many things out there that are more universally flattering than a wrap dress. Stilettos, sideswept bangs, and dark colors come to mind, but really, the wrap dress is where it's at. And what makes it even better is that, even though it's a staple every woman should have in her closet, and it'll last you for years, it doesn't have to cost a bundle. Although it definitely can.

The J.Crew Collection puts a high price on preppy

Filed under: Stores We Love, Style in the News, Clothing

We've always loved J.Crew for the fact that we can get quality, classic pieces at a decent price -- a dress isn't going to be cheap, but it won't look or feel cheap, either. Still, the price tags were never enough to dissuade us from perusing the racks. At least, not until now.

Traveling in style - High-end fashion luggage

We recently got a matching set of luggage. It's great -- it's red and easy to pick out when it comes out on the conveyor. Not the most stylish thing in the world, but it came with an enormous cosmetics case, so we're happy.

However, we started looking around at some of the seriously stylish luggage utilized by the rich and famous, and now we have bag envy. This Forbes article makes a really good point -- if you're carrying around expensive designer clothes, shouldn't you keep those clothes in a suitcase befitting them?

Banana Republic opens a British store and charges major mark-ups

Filed under: Style in the News

If you're all about the Banana and live in the States, be happy. The company just opened its first British store on London's Regent Street, and while the fashions are what you would expect to find in any Banana Republic, the prices are another story.

The Daily Mail reports outrageous mark-ups -- in some cases close to 100% more in the British shop than in American stores. For example, a dress that costs $188 there only costs $150 here in the States (and yes, I did the currency conversion for you, no need to worry). A Flatiron baby satchel had about a 40% mark-up. The 'Doris' sunglasses that sell for $118 in the U.S. sell for $149 across the pond.

While these are definitely major mark-ups, I couldn't find the examples of 100% or more that the Daily Mail reported. Supposedly there is an "orange textured coat" with a 133% mark-up -- let me know if you find something matching that description on BR's U.S. website. The other thing to keep in mind is that the American prices don't include sales tax, whereas the British prices apparently do, and from what I understand, they have considerably higher taxes. At any rate, if you're a Brit coming over for a visit, you might do well to get your Banana fix while you're here and save some money.

Are cheap shoes a thing of the past?

According to recent research conducted by Mintel, Payless might want to watch its back. The research indicates that over the next five years, the number of shoes purchased each year in the UK is expected to drop by seven percent, according to Manolo the Shoeblogger. And Manolo the Shoeblogger doesn't lie.

And why do I assume that means that cheap shoes are on their way out? Because one-third of the women questioned in the above poll said they now pay more for their shoes, which means that as they make their shoe purchases, they'll be looking for quality over quantity.

What woman do you know who has watched an episode of Sex and the City and not sighed over at least one beautiful pair of designer shoes? Years ago, only a select few were familiar with Manolo Blahnik and Christian Louboutin, and now there are middle-school girls fawning over these sexy heels with the same look in their eyes I had when ogling the members of New Kids on the Block.
