Styles that Stick: A sparkling white smile

Filed under: Vintage and Retro, Cosmetics

bright white smile
Styledashers, when we talk about styles that stick, right away we think about clothes or accessories, but let's not forget that there are a lot of elements of style that aren't necessarily wearable things we put on and take off. A deep dark tan was one of them -- although I do realize that if you tan the way I do, spray on, you actually can put it on and take it off pretty easily.

Another style that sticks is the Colgate smile, i.e. a bright, white smile with almost perfectly aligned teeth. I say "almost perfectly aligned" because if your teeth are perfect perfect, we know that isn't natural. Granted, a bright white smile isn't always natural either (and honey, have I seen some nuclear powered, unnatural smiles), but without asking the person, we'll just have to assume that the person brushes and flosses in the morning, after every meal, and before bed.

A beautiful smile is the best accessory a man or woman (or even kid) could have. Even if you're wearing the grungiest clothes, have on no makeup, and still haven't brushed your hair, a sparkling smile is just as good as a string of pearls.

So consider this a reminder to take good care of your teeth. Brush. Floss. If you have to (and unfortunately, I have to because of years of very bad, stain-causing things), use a simple whitener like Crest Whitestrips (which would make it a Crest Smile, not a Colgate Smile).

Drugstore Beauty Queen: Crest Whitestrips

I went to the dentist today to have my two front teeth fixed because not only were they stained from all the coffee, tea, red wine, and diet Coke I drink, but they also had cavities in them! I didn't even know people could get cavities in their front teeth! (Okay, I knew they could, but I had never heard of it.)

Let me tell you that having the cavities filled were no big deal - my dental insurance covered that, but since they were my front teeth, I had to have special filling material and other treatments to match the colors that basically cost me as much as, oh about three week's worth of Dresses of the Day.

So to save all of of my favorite Styledash readers the same kind of pocketbook pain if ever you have to have your front teeth done, I am recommending that you just go ahead and keep your pearly whites white yourself with something like Crest Whitestrips. I used to use the Whitestrips to keep my front teeth sprakling white, but stopped because...well, I don't know why. If only! If only I had stuck with it and did an occasional touch-up, I wouldn't have had to pay almost fifty times the cost of them to have it done with my dentist.

Crest Whitestrips are $19.99 on Amazon, but you can buy them at any drugstore.

TSA-friendly cosmetics

It's a tough time indeed to be a flying fashionista. After the UK airline terrorist plot was exposed on August 10, it's suddenly verboten to bring gels, fluids, lotions and other necessities anywhere beyond the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) screeners and metal detectors.

I appreciate the need for security, but no hand lotion on a plane? Are you kidding?

Fortunately, as Anna Bahney reports in the New York Times, there is hope. Bahney points out that the rules allow for a carry-on cosmetic kit if -- and only if -- that cosmetic kit is an easily screened, transparent bag.

As for the contents of that bag ... well, you'd better stick to powders, sticks and wipes, like $6.95 Toothfresh Powdered Toothpaste in lieu of your $3 Crest. Bahney has a long list of suggestions for how to fly in style here.
