Beyonce's million dollar wig collection

Filed under: Celebrities with Style, Hair Cut and Style

Beyonce pretty much always looks like a million bucks, and her engagement ring is reported to be worth about five million bucks, so we're not all that surprised to hear that B has a climate-controlled closet filled with about a million dollars' worth of high-end hair.

Some of her wigs are worth over $10,000 on their own due to the fact that most are custom made from real hair. And, you know, it's probably a good investment for Beyonce -- she changes her 'do practically daily, and it's surely a whole lot easier to take a new wig out of her closet than have to see a hairstylist and have a brand new look created.

Design your jacket, the DressMonkey will make it

dressmonkey custom blazers and jackets
A request has been made of me to be an advisor on a shopping trip for a man's blazer.

Though I like to consider myself a semi-expert in many things, I still have to do a little prep work because 1) it's been a little while since I've shopped for menswear and 2) (see photo above, lower left) when did cotton candy pink become a hot color for men's jackets?!?!

Apparently, pink is hot when someone custom-designs his own jacket over at DressMonkey. You select fabrics like tweed or velvet, colors, and customize everything from the number and type of buttons to whether you want a cell phone pocket. You send in your measurements along with your customizations and they make your jacket just for you. DressMonkey, of course, provides some suggested combinations, but ultimately, it's all up to you and your personal style, baby.

Even if that's a pink velvet blazer with three gold buttons.

Three Custom brings your favorite lipstick back from the dead

Have you ever fallen in love with a particular shade of lipstick and then found out that it has been discontinued? The makeup wizards at Three Custom feel your pain. They can re-create your favorite discontinued shade if you have a sample for them to analyze. Send them your old color and they will create a new formula to duplicate the old shade. They also can create new shades from practically any kind of color sample like a paint chip or a fabric swatch. The lipstick costs $50 for two tubes and they keep the formula on file so you can reorder (with a $10 re-order discount each time).

Color-coordinate with personalized Nike shoes

Nike has introduced a way to have seriously unique shoes. With their Nike iD Website, you can pick a shoe design, pick the colors for almost every aspect of it, have a short message embroidered on the heel, and then have them shipped to your doorstep. They certainly aren't cheap though -- for many of the shoes, the customized editions will run you $150; however, some are in the low $100 range. There's a big selection of men's and women's shoes on the site, so everyone can match their shoes to their outfits or their iPod (as Nike's site suggests).

I think it's a cool idea, as it provides a way to spruce up the common tennis/running/soccer/football shoe by picking your own color combinations. But, as I came to find out, it can be very easy to design a very, very ugly pair of shoes. And I'm not sure I would rely on an online image for ordering an expensive pair of tennis shoes!

What first interested me about the custom Nike shoes was the option to customize Air Max shoe designs from past generations. You can choose shoe models from '90, '91, '93, '95, and '97. So, if you missed out on a certain pair of shoes from the 90's, here's your chance to redeem yourself.

Puma's Mongolian BBQ

As far as I knew, Mongolian Barbeques were those places in strip malls where you pay $14, cook (and eat) a lot of meat and then come back home to the several antacids awaiting you.

Not so, according to Puma. You see, Puma's newest marketing concept is the Mongolian Shoe BBQ. Based on the original Mongolian barbecues (you know, the ones where Genghis Khan's warriors each cooked their own meat using their swords as skewers), Puma now offers you the opportunity to have a shoe made to your own personal tastes.

Like its strip mall counterparts, the Puma Mongolian BBQ gives you a bunch of "ingredients" (an assortment of pre-cut materials) and then "cook" them by putting them together as you like. As far as I can tell, it's the closest thing to an affordable custom-made shoe, and you won't even need an antacid when you're done.

Get it altered

Buying clothing off the rack, whether it's in a discount or a department store, is much easier and less expensive than getting clothing custom made or going straight to a designer. But even if the actual design of the garment is good, that doesn't mean it's going to fit properly. A few years ago, an ill-fitting garment might have been put back on that rack if it didn't work out in the dressing room, but that is no longer the case. Lately, the trend is to buy clothes and have them altered to fit your body and your tastes. People are even getting their t-shirts tailored -- where once the most common alteration was to lengthen or shorten a hemline or inseam.

This taste for tailoring is known as "remaking" clothes and Barney's, for example, is reporting a 20% increase in the number of alterations made this year over last year. Requests are made for more body-conscious clothing, at a level that clothing made to fit different body types simply cannot match.

Is it worth the added expense? It is to many, who get a satisfaction out of having created something at some level. To others, it isn't worth the time or the price and they'd rather seek out brands that fit them well from the get-go than wait 2-3 weeks for their newly remade t-shirt to get returned.
