Wal-Mart Worker Killed by Black Friday Shoppers

Filed under: Style in the News

ShoppersToday at Green Acres mall in Nassau County, New York, tragedy struck when a 34 year old Wal-Mart worker was killed by shoppers who physically broke down the doors and rushed the store.

Is it the financial crunch that makes people so excited to shop at Wal-Mart? This is insanity. The man who died was a part-time, temporary worker, just doing his job. Can you believe that shoppers were this voracious?

The bulletproof is in the jacket

Bulletproof cars are so passé, that's Al Capone stuff. We'll see your Tom Cruise and raise you one better- bulletproof clothing.

In Mexico there have been 1,400 drug-related deaths this year alone. Obviously that isn't something to be taken, or discussed, lightly. However, it does appear to be a pretty good marketing campaign for Miguel Caballero, a clothing maker from Colombia who recently opened a shop on Avenida Presidente Masaryk, "a high-end shopping thoroughfare in the Polanco neighborhood, one of the most upscale in Mexico City." A dark day for fashion: Yves Saint Laurent has died

Filed under: Style in the News

One of the most influential fashion designers of our time has passed away. Yves Saint Laurent died today in Paris at the age of 71. No cause of death has yet been released.

Saint Laurent is probably the main force behind women wearing pants on a daily basis. When he suggested pants for women, it was considered highly controversial, but he said that his job was "to make clothes that reflect our times. I'm convinced women want to wear pants." Obviously, he was right.

Crazy coffins let you go out in style

I have no idea what would happen if I died tomorrow. I don't know who'd get my stuff, who'd make the funeral arrangements, blah blah -- the list goes on. Thinking about my death doesn't exactly brighten my day, and it never seems like an appropriate topic for casual conversation.

But maybe it could be, if I was planning on getting buried in an oddball coffin -- then I could take the focus off of my eventual demise, and focus instead on how cool my funeral would be.

"Honey, do you think I'd look good buried in a giant golf bag? What about an egg? Or a guitar case?"

If you're the kind of person that thinks it'd be cool to send your mortal remains off to their eternal resting place in a container that'll make for a decidedly unique funeral, check out the the new Crazy Coffins online gallery from Vic Fearn and Company. It's full of real coffins, created by all kinds of different people who wanted to be buried in something more exciting than a boring old box.

You may not find exactly what you'd like to go out in, but it's sure to give you some good ideas.

Remembering a style icon: James Brown

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

No one so defined style as the Godfather of Soul. From the pompadour to the omnipresent shades to the purple outfits, the Hardest Working Man in Show Business knew what it meant to be well-coiffed, well-dressed and well-accessorized.

Sure, he had his share of scandal. And, yes, he had his run-ins with the law (not the least of which was his O.J.-style interstate chase in 1988). But just as we can't expect Naomi Campbell to be a saint, neither should we expect James Brown to act like a nun.

In short, James Brown was a style icon, and he will be missed. To paraphrase a song of his, We don't know where you are now, James Brown ... but wherever it is, it's got to be funky.
