Lana Crooks' plush skull

Want to turn your boring old couch into a skull filled, dungeon-esque fantasy world without losing the comfort of those soft throw pillows? For many goth kids, metal heads, and people with a strangely morbid sense of humor, there is only one answer -- the plush skull by the amazing plush toy artist Lana Crooks. She's the creator of a number of plush toy masterpieces, but she's apparently finding out that the plush skull has some kind of universal appeal.

Make your cake sparkle with Very Different Cakes

If you're anything like us, you know a party needs three things -- delicious wine, good music, and cake. Being the fashionistas that we are, we don't want to serve just a plain old sheet cake, no siree. We want our cake to be memorable, especially if it's for a special occasion. And not that we have anything against iced flowers, but we want decorations that reflect our personal style.

We want flowers, and birds, and glitz! Give us whimsy, give us glamor -- give us Very Different Cakes!

Decorating for your Kentucky Derby party

The Kentucky Derby is right around the corner (Saturday, May 3) -- what are your plans? If you're not heading to Louisville, you can still enjoy the festivities of the event by hosting a fabulous party in your home.

If you want to keep some of the Derby traditions in tact, you'll need to serve some particular drinks and dishes, but even before the food comes out, you'll want to set the tone with decor. Here are two ways to decorate, going along with the two types of Derby-goers (Millionaire's Row and the infield).

orange slice tableThere are some decent options out there for environmentally conscious home decor. But really...some of them are kinda beige. Or cookie cutter same-same, or just too burlap-ish crunchy, you know?

Relax, you have options.

For one-of-a-kind decor, in the words of 1stdibs.com, "Do the planet a favor, buy vintage."

Stylishly centered, a la CB2

grid centerpiece candleholderCall it Spring cleaning, or perhaps a bit of a "starting over" - whatever it is, I have been turning my house on its rooftop cleaning and re-decorating. It's not quite as major as knocking down walls or even painting. I'm just looking at and buying new stuff that feels fresh.

One of the (many) things that has caught my eye is the Grid Centerpiece Candleholder from CB2. A black matte "scaffold" holds seven votive candles or tealights in a modern, Mondrian multi-level steel-grid. The candles are protected wtih glass shades. Though I don't have a large enough dining table to hold something like this, it's intersting enough to stand on its own on a console table against the wall.

The Grid Centerpiece Candleholder is $39.95 at CB2.

The cutest shoe you'll never wear

Filed under: Haute Home, Accessories, Shoes

There is an abundance of products that satisfy both my foodie side and my style side. My KitchenAid mixer is one (it's a deep vibrant red). If you are a shoe person you might be as smitten as I am with this little number, the Cinderella cake server. Not only is it shaped like a shoe, but the "heel" is magnetic and pops off so you don't have to sacrifice functionality for supercuteness. It sells for $42.

My house is cuter than your house

No, that header isn't an assertion that I'm making, since I have no idea what your house looks like. It's the title of the blog My house is cuter than yours in which a fabulous retro-chic blogger does has parties, makes aprons and all sorts of other crafty things. She knows what style she likes and she fully embraces it. One of my favorite posts on her blog is the photo tour of her house - which really is cuter than mine. Have you ever seen such a perfectly outfitted retro kitchen? I simply love the look and think that her use of vintage/old-looking food containers and boxes adds a really interesting touch to the decor.

More pics after the jump.
