jenni kanye mommy bagIf you're a new mom, you know how much money you're spending at the drugstore -- every other day, you need something new for your baby! Plus, you need a few little pick-me-ups for yourself, too, and a nice scented lotion or bright new nail polish might be just the thing.

A diaper bag with style

Filed under: Handbags, Accessories, Ask StyleList, Kids and Babies

Roman Savell's Soho Diaper Clutch, $145.00Reader Cynthia asked us:

Well I was looking for a diaper bag with great fashion sense. No prints please, just solid color with leather....like a trim or flap. What is your view on this bag made by a company called pyknyk I love it but would like your input on it? Love, Cynthia

Well, Cynthia, we had a look at the Pyknyk bags, and they are seriously stacked. They are loaded with all kinds of mom bag goodness, including a diaper-changing pad!

Still, we have to say our favorite mom bags come from Roman Savell, like the one pictured here.

Why aren't you wearing this? Reese Li 'Lexington' Diaper Bag

Filed under: Handbags, Accessories, Kids and Babies

Well, if you don't have a baby, the answer to why you're not wearing this bag is pretty obvious. However, if you're a mom (or even if you're not, but you need to carry a lot of stuff around with you), take a look at your diaper bag. Does it have Winnie the Pooh or ABC blocks on it? Because, really, those designs are for your baby, not for you.

Father's Day Gift Guide: for the new father

There's nothing more manly than becoming a father -- it's something that a woman technically cannot do. Still, most of the paraphernalia that comes along with the manhood's highest honor is far from being flattering to one's masculinity, but times they are a changing. Somebody somewhere had the good sense to start marketing dad-friendly diaper bags, and some of them are actually cool enough to be mistaken for a murse, laptop bag, or holdall.

We were totally impressed when we ran across this skull and iron cross-emblazoned diaper bag made by a company called DadGear. Sure, it costs $79.99 -- but you can't put a price tag on the male ego. If you're not the skull and iron cross type, you can tone it down with a Diaper Dude bag from Target. It's a little cheaper and doesn't put off that I'm trying too hard to be a cool dad vibe.

Indie Designer Interviews: OlovesM Eco-friendly Bags

Filed under: Handbags, Accessories, Style in the News, Interviews, Green Fashion

OlovesMI'm a big fan of all of the amazing independent designers out there. In an effort to get inside the mind of the indie designer and find out just what makes all of these creative types tick, I present to you an ongoing segment I call Indie Designer Interviews.

Today's interview is with Merle OBrien, the Aspen, Colorado-based designer behind a line of eco handbags called OlovesM, which were recently handed out to celebs attending the Sundance Film Festival. These fashionable and environmentally friendly bags feature predominantly recycled materials, including a snazzy sport/diaper bag made from repurposed yoga mats.

How did you get started as a designer? I was in yoga class and the idea for my bags just popped into my head, so I ran off my mat and started doing a ton of research, and cut and sewed a lot of prototypes until I figured it out. I am one of those people who is always thinking about ideas, and some seem to work, while others just help me learn more do's and dont's about business!!

Diaper bags are too big. Carry a clutch

Filed under: Handbags, Accessories, Kids and Babies

diaper clutchI have a confession to make.

I am absolutely fascinated with diaper bags, and I don't even have a baby!

The reason is that diaper bags actually make for amazingly handy laptop bags. They are usually padded, and have plenty of compartments for all those wily wires and cords. They are also infintely more interesting than the hundreds upon hundreds of black nylon laptop bags I see all the time. Best of all, diaper bags are big. However, for a real mommy, a diaper bag can be a pain in the butt because they are so big. They're not carrying a 1.5 lb laptop, they've got a screaming squirming little live monster in their arms.

Bella Fiore Couture makes the Diaper Clutch, a stylish and sleek answer to the oversized diaper bag. The diaper clutch is roomy enough to carry diapers, wipes, and the clutch itself unfolds into a changing mat. Add to that a choice of some pretty patterns (I like the plum scroll) and you've got yourself a great little bag.

Of course, I have no idea how a laptop would fit in there.
