Party tricks: affordable supplies from Ikea

The best advice we ever heard from Ted on Queer Eye was to get inexpensive wine glasses from Ikea instead of paper or plastic cups. It doesn't cost that much more -- in fact, over time it's actually less expensive -- and it's about a million times nicer to sip from glass than plastic. Not to mention the carbon footprint you're reducing by skipping the red keg cups.

A quick spin around Ikea reveals additional party supplies that are as affordable as disposable items, but give your party a more festive, grown up feel. From plates to cutlery to our favorite paper napkins, some of Ikea's best buys in the gallery.

Make your house a home

One of the things I delighted in when I moved into my very first apartment was the process of picking out a set of dishes. Of course, my budget was considerably lower than I would have liked, so I ended up settling for a modern table setting from Target. At the time, I thought the plates and bowls were well-designed and unique. The well-designed part remained true, but I later found out that half of my girlfriends had selected the very same set. Unique, they were not.

But for truly unique dishes, you should shop at Little Flower Designs. The online retailer sells teapots, tea cups, sushi sets, vases and bowls that feature hand-painted pictures of nature. I love the simple, almost childish way these dishes are decorated. The pieces kind of remind me of the pottery I used to make when I was a kid, except with much better executed. Ranging in price from $20-$40, these would make great housewarming gifts.

Eat your stilettos

Filed under: Haute Home, Accessories, Shoes

stiletto platesOh baby. They make you look long and lean and ohsosexy, but at the end of the day, there is nothing you want to do more than hurl those nasty stilettos against the wall. Don't do it. Those heels will do more damage than a full set of ginsu knives.

Instead, take your fork and knife to a pair of stilettos on a plate. These dinner plates, designed by Luke Morgan for Her House (UK), are printed in high gloss on fine bone china. Three 6" heeled styles are pumps, sandals, and peep-toes. The plates come in two sizes, 12" and 10", and are available from the Her House website. Don't worry, gents, they've got plates with black or white wing tips, too.
