From the Fragrance Frontlines - Day 1 1/2: Sperm Whales, Donna Karan, and Virgins, Oh My!

Filed under: Events: On the Scene, Fragrance, Interviews, Beauty Tips

Senior Fashion Editor Sarah Cristobal is on assignment this week in France to discover what goes into creating the world's top fragrances. Read her daily blogs as she travels to perfumeries in Paris and Grasse, and dutifully observes the ooh la la of French culture.

A lot has happened since my first dispatch. The IFF tour was amazing! Oh, the things one can learn about the origins of our favorite fragrances. Here are some interesting -- and rather surprising -- facts:

  • I am not a one-fragrance kind of gal, but Balmain's Ambre Gris is one of the favorites in my arsenal of scents. In terms of fashion, the label is currently the chicest on the market, but who knew that

Balmain's Ambre Gris, a.k.a. Eau de Sperm Whale?

Balmain's latest odour (launched in 2008) is based on the rarefied excretions of the sperm whale? The mammal is a squid eater -- bones and all -- and when the skeleton is broken down in the whale's body it is eventually compacted to about the size of a football. By the time it is passed, the crush of bones is so light that it floats on the water. Apparently, oil extraction from this extremely pricey commodity smells horrid at first but eventually transforms into a sweet earthy musk. Tres chic!
  • The two main perfumeries in France are IFF and Givaudan. Together they account for the creation of most of the world's fine scents. In order to win a bid on a scent, the perfumers (or "noses") are presented with a brief by an intermediary on behalf of a production and branding company such as Unilever or Coty, Inc. Teams of perfumers then compete both internally and against outside perfumers to come up with the scent that best represents the label or celebrity for which the brief was created. Whomever wins the brief takes all, and the rest are out of luck. Can you believe doing all of that legwork and then not getting paid? Insiders say that it's considered an extremely outdated model, even among top fragrance brass.

Molly Sims in Donna Karan - I Want That!

Molly Sims

After hanging out front-row at New York Fashion Week, it was easy to see Miss Molly Sims was feeling inspired at the premiere of new flick "Fired Up!" While the dress obviously looks ab fab on Molly, it's also a great dress for you. Yes, you – the everyday woman that doesn't know how to wear the Grecian runway trends, camouflage that little tummy, minimize a full bust, or cover up that bus driver jiggle on your arms. Oh yeah, this dress can do all that and more.

Nomad Two Worlds Event With Hugh Jackman

Donna Karan and Hugh Jackman
January 22 at Donna Karan's Urban Zen (aka Stephen Weis Studio), NYC

It turns out Hugh Jackman has some pretty good Donna Karan stories.

At her Urban Zen studio last week he recounted that Peter Allen -- whose portrayal in Broadway's "The Boy From Oz" won him a Tony Award -- knew the young designer when she was just starting out.

Charity Couture: Red Dress Collection Auctions Off One-of-a-Kind Designs

Filed under: Style for a Cause, Fashion Week

Every year during New York Fashion Week, tastemakers count on the Heart Truth's Red Dress Collection to send a showstopping stream of one-of-a-kind gowns down the runway.

The event brings together the likes of Marc Jacobs and Zac Posen, who create original gowns to benefit The Heart Truth. (The organization that raises awareness about women's heart disease.)

This year, the show is getting an exciting new spin. Now, in partnership with Clothes Off Our Back, some of those previously unattainable dresses will be auctioned off to the public after the show. The proceeds will benefit children's charities.

Look for a sequined Diane von Furstenberg stunner Kelly Ripa wore to last year's event, along with gowns from Carmen Volvo and Donna Karan, among others. The auction starts online on February 6, but if online shopping isn't your thing, you can also witness the real things on display at the Rockefeller Center from Valentine's Day until February 21.

Fashion Designer Moves in on Madonna's Man

Alex RodriguezAlex Rodriguez must be quite the charmer. Either that or he's got a huge *ahem* catcher's mitt. First he seemingly cast a spell on one of Hollywood's elite, Madonna. But now that she's reportedly romping with a Brazilian boytoy, Jesus Luz, another older woman has her sights set on A-Rod.

DKNY to make over food distribution vans

Filed under: Style in the News, Style for a Cause

DKNY is doing a little charity work. No, the label isn't stylishly dressing starving bloggers (although, Donna? That would be a good one!) -- instead, they are making over 15 food distribution vans for City Harvest.

Hey, a makeover is a makeover, and we loooove a makeover (and a good cause).

Double good: Support ovarian cancer and get a Felix Ray clutch for $36

Filed under: Handbags, Accessories, Daily Obsession

You know Felix Ray from Sex in the City, and you've seen Jennifer Lopez and Paris Hilton carrying bags with the signature bow.

Usually you have to go to Kitson, Henri Bendel, or Saks and pay $200 or more for a Felix Ray bag. But you can pick up this pretty Small Metal Mesh Bow clutch for a mere $36 at the "Rolls Royce of all garage sales."

It gets better! The proceeds go to benefit the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. So you're not shopping, you're donating!

This wonderous sale, dubbed Super Saturday 11 will be held in Walter Mill, NY on Saturday, July 26th. If you're not local to the area, you're still in luck, because they're partnering with QVC and QVC.com to make this bag, as well as select items from over 200 designers, available to the rest of us.

The other designers include Donna Karan, Carolina Herrera, Michael Kors, and Calvin Klein. At QVC and QVC.com you'll find hot designers like ADAM Adam Lippes, alice+olivia, and Theory.

Got your heart set on that Felix Ray bag? Here's a shopping tip: the item # on QVC is: #S4061. Happy donating!

Donna Karan too expensive for Hillary Clinton?

Filed under: Style in the News

There are a lot of things that make us go "huh?" about Hillary Clinton. Like the fact that she stood by her cheating husband, or that she got in bed (metaphorically speaking!) with drug companies after previously espousing the ideal of an egalitarian health care system. Or why so many people have voted for her so far... stuff like that.

What we couldn't care less about is how she wears her hair, or what clothes she puts on her body -- we think female politicians should get the same treatment as men, and how often do we pick on John McCain' suits? (Snooze...)

Elle auctions off designer water bottles for the planet

Filed under: Style in the News, Style for a Cause

Elle magazine has teamed up with eco-crusader Laurie David to auction off some Sigg aluminum water bottles decorated by some of fashion's elite designers. Diane von Furstenberg, Kenneth Cole, Stella McCartney and others have decked out each bottle with their own unique doodles and slogans. They even allowed Donna Karan to participate, even though she hates bunnies.

I don't know what they used to apply their designs, hopefully something that doesn't smear -- since I imagine these things will garner some pretty high prices. The auction is being launched in conjunction with Elle's 3rd annual Green Issue, and the proceeds will go to David's stopglobalwarming.org -- bidding starts on April 17.

Fashion crime: fur-haters graffitti DK's house

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

Once again, anti-fur coalition forces have decided to set their sights on the home of fashion empress Donna Karan. This time, a group called the Paint Panthers decided that it would be a good idea to spray paint some messages to the designer on the road leading up to her house in the Hamptons. One message read "Bunny Butcher" in hot pink scrawl with an arrow pointing towards DK's house. Another featured a carton bunny and the message "I don't want to be a handbag."

Pete Wentz spreads evil via DKNY

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

Back in September, I reported that Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz started his own clothing line, Clandestine Industries. After looking through the collection, I decided to try and ignore it, allowing it to stew in its own little corner of crappiness and eventually fizzle out. Unfortunately, the corner seems to have grown and even infiltrated other designers' worlds. Brace yourselves...

Wentz and DKNY have just struck up a deal for a new line of junior sportswear to be released in time for the back-to-school rush.

No! No! Do not want! If my younger sister (a member of the target demographic) gets anywhere near the line, I will set fire to her.

I will.

Fashionable mugs for good causes

Filed under: Haute Home, Style for a Cause

Fashion designer Giorgio Armani is just one of the celebs who has created a unique coffee mug to raise money as part of the 21st Century Leaders. The 21CL label is a charity artwork project, which raises money for a variety causes. Mugs by Donna Karan, Armani, Claudia Schiffer, David Bowie and others raise money for Trade plus Aid. Save the Children and other important charities. There are also wristbands, T-shirts and other products available. The goal is to raise a minimum of $3 million over three years. Armani's mug, shown here, is perhaps the sleekest of the bunch depicting the Mandarin character for "hope" against a celadon background. The mugs sells for £9.99 and will be followed by a line of decorative plates sometime next year.
