Oscar Blandi Pronto Colore Root Touch-Up & Highlighting Pen

Filed under: Hair Care, Beauty Tips

oscar blandi pronto root touch up penFor those of us who regularly color our hair to cover grey, it's going to take more than a little recession to make us stop. More like, we'd have to be trapped, in a full body cast, in a cave, on a desert island, before we'd miss a hair appointment.

The Leading Lipstick Indicator is up 40%. Uh-oh.

Beauty industry insiders believe that sales go up when the economy goes down. The theory is that people turn to less extravagant indulgences (like say, lipstick) when they're uncertain about the future. Leonard Lauder coined a name for this phenomenon after lipstick sales doubled after Sept. 11 - the Leading Lipstick Indicator - and while the name is a bit tongue in cheek, the correlation between cosmetics sale and economic woes seems to be strong.

The bad news? Cosmetic sales are up 40%.

The good news? We found a list of fall's most popular shades. We're sure you'll find a little something to spoil yourself with on this list.

Michelle Obama on Jay Leno in J. Crew - Get The Look!

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Get the Look

Last night Michele Obama took a break from the Presidential campaign trail and made an appearance on the Jay Leno show. She talked about her husband Barack's ailing grandmother, Toots, and her daughter's lack of awe for his upcoming 30 minute T.V. special. But the big news was her stylishly cheery yellow ensemble.

Failing economy = fewer cashmere sweaters

Filed under: Style in the News

Another sign that our economy is in real trouble? Cashmere is no longer in demand. Cashmere producers and designers are scaling back on the luxury knit as manufacturing prices rise and consumers shy away from spending on luxury products.

The credit crunch is even hard on royalty

The J.Crew Collection puts a high price on preppy

Filed under: Stores We Love, Style in the News, Clothing

We've always loved J.Crew for the fact that we can get quality, classic pieces at a decent price -- a dress isn't going to be cheap, but it won't look or feel cheap, either. Still, the price tags were never enough to dissuade us from perusing the racks. At least, not until now.

Economy falls, panties drop

Filed under: Style in the News, Swimwear and Lingerie

A weak economy affects everything, from homes, cars, and groceries all the way down to our undies. And lingerie retailers are feeling it, noting that even affluent customers are scaling way back on their panty purchases. Sales of big-ticket, upscale bra and panty sets (priced around $120) are falling, while sales of basic t-shirt bras and seamless panties are actually seeing increases.

Mr. McCain is ready for his close up

(Think that's pricey? Click the photo to see all the cool stuff you can buy for $5,000)

The New York Post, (which is not exactly the newspaper of record, but still, they do tend to get the juicier scoops) reports that presidential candidate John McCain has spent $5,583.43 to pay a make up artist to get him ready for his appearances.

Hey, we understand. We've always wanted to have a personal hair and make up attendant, and you know what? $6k doesn't sound like that much money considering how hard the poor girl has to work. Look at him! He's old! HD is harsh!

We're sure that Cindy "$280k earrings" McCain, paid for the cosmetic services, so it's not like it came out of his government salary. Plus, you could think of it as one more way he's stimulating the economy, by throwing a little cash at the style-worker class. So, thanks John!

The Gap has to cut way back on spending

Filed under: Style in the News

Eek! We have yet another sign that the economy is going downhill. The Gap corporation has taken a decision to cut costs, meaning the advertising budget is getting slashed. You know it's bad when they decide to scale down those awesome, high budget Old Navy ads.

The Gap will not be going ahead with it's spring campaign as planned. The CFO of the company, Sabrina Williams has said, "The primary focus of spring marketing for the namesake division will be print and in-store efforts for the retailer's footwear collaboration with designer Pierre Hardy, due out in March."

The reason behind all these cost cuts is simple. Profits are down. Gap finished the month of Feb. about 5% down from where it was at this time last year. Old Navy profits also decreased by 5%. The only store in the family that has posted gains is Banana Republic, coming in at a 2% increase.

I'm all for putting their ad dollars to better use. I mean just look at this commercial! If they pay me ten bucks I'll come up with something more creative than this. Hey, at least they have a good song playing in the background.

Why have a red carpet? The country NEEDS it!

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Celebrities with Style

You're here at StyleDash, so I'm going to take a wild guess and assume you at least care about fashion. Well, it turns out you're a good person for caring. That's right. Not shallow, but good, and here's why:

The lack of red carpet events is hurting our economy.

Think about it -- Jennifer Lopez wears the infamous green Versace dress on the red carpet to the 2000 Grammys. Millions of people saw it when she wore it there, and millions more saw it after the fact. Prom dresses, wedding dresses, formalwear, and clubwear are all modeled after this design. Not only does Versace make a buck, but so does everyone else involved in all those other industries.
