Miley, how you've grown!

Sixteen-year-old Miley Cyrus graces the August cover of ELLE magazine and also poses for a sexy fashion feature inside the issue.

Cyrus has been developing quite the fashion habit: First she announced her teen clothing line for Walmart with Max Azria and now she's nabbed the cover (photographed by Carter Smith) of one of the most prestigious fashion magazines.

The starlet tells the tome about her designer collaboration: "The jeans are my favorite part of the entire [Walmart] line. Because, like, literally this is going to be good for, like, Middle America, and it will be great for kids that really want to be in fashion but that don't have it available."

Get a sneak peek at ELLE's interview with the teen queen.

Just as Emma Watson secures her status as fashion icon, the starlet wants out of the limelight. So, she's fleeing to... New York City.

The "Harry Potter" star, who's rumored to have a fashion line in the works, reveals in the August issue of British ELLE that she's ready to make like Hermione and bury her head in some books: she's set to attend Columbia this fall.

"At the moment I feel like I need to go away and figure out what I want to do and be myself for a bit. I just want to take a step back from it and not rush into stuff," she told the magazine.

"I need university to give me that break. People think because I'm going to university I'm never going to act again, but it's actually me... I want to... figure out how I feel about everything first. Maybe I'll keep acting, maybe I won't. I just want to find something where I feel I have to do this."

"You can't please everyone," Watson told Elle. "That's something I'm learning."

Watson says she loves the recent "edgy" Elle covers.

A heavy, "feline" eye, as the makeup artist on set called it, looks all the more striking against handfuls of diamonds.

"I don't want other people to decide who I am. I want to decide that for myself," she told the magazine.

Watson says Chanel is one of her favorite labels, and rumors swirl that the teenager is set to design her own line.

Suspects Held in Harry Winston Diamond Heist

Filed under: Style in the News

Stolen baubles! Police recover part of the stolen jewels from the multimillion dollar Harry Winston heist in Paris. Photo: Francois Guillot/AFP/Getty Images

Looks like real life doesn't go the way of "The Thomas Crown Affair!"

Last December, jewel thieves set a new record when they made off with an estimated $118 million worth of Harry Winston jewelry in Paris.

Dressed in drag, the thieves pulled off the mega-heist during prime rush hour, and only 330 feet away from a police station.

Good news for Harry Winston, though, WWD reports that Monday night French police arrested 32 suspects for questioning. ABC News adds that all the suspects are local (perhaps from the Paris suburbs), but no charges have been filed. The suspects currently range from 22 to 67 in age and can be held for up to 96 hours.

Compared to this, the $400,000 in missing Dior jewelry from Lindsay Lohan's ELLE magazine photo shoot looks like chump change!

French Elle Features Stars Sans Makeup on Covers

elle covers
We don't even like to run to the grocery store without at least a touch of powder and a swipe (or three) of mascara, so we're pretty much in awe of the celebrities who have posed for the cover of French Elle without a stitch of makeup on their faces. Admit it -- you are, too!

Eva Herzigova, 36, Monica Bellucci, 44, and Sophie Marceau, 42, each have their own 'Stars Sans Fards' (or Stars Without Rouge/Makeup) French Elle cover, as you can see above. And we think it's a good reminder that a steady hand with the makeup brush doesn't equal beauty -- not only do these women have gorgeous features, but there's something inherently attractive about their openness and willingness to be themselves for all the world to see.

Elle fires Nina Garcia

Breaking news -- Nina Garcia, long time fashion director at Elle has been "let go." There's still no word on what caused the falling out between the company and Nina, and we don't know if this will affect her status as a judge for everyone's favorite show, Project Runway.

Men really do prefer thin women

For a long time now there has been a problem in the fashion industry with clothes that are too tiny, being worn by models that are too thin, walking down runways that are probably too small. This, in turn, has affected the average celebrity who now also feels the need to wear a size zero in order to fit into designer sample clothing. And that has now changed the way we regular women feel about ourselves as well. The pressure from society and the media to be smaller and smaller is more intense than ever!

But, one thing has remained constant in during the thin is in era. Normal men have professed their love for normal size women. Polls are always coming out claiming that men prefer real women with curves, or that guys like a girl with a little meat on her bones.

Not so, says Amanda Fortini, in this month's Elle Magazine. At 5'6" she actually got down to about 100 pounds, and says that men were actually much more into her at that weight. I was actually shocked to hear what she had to say about her experience as a super thin waif of a woman. Amanda wrote, "Many men, I quickly learned, really do like frighteningly lean women, whatever they may claim to the controversy. As an average, medium-size young woman, I was unremarkable, innocuous. As a skinny slip of a thing, I was something of a sensation. In restaurants and at parties, men flirted at me extravagantly...As a male friend once put it to me, semifacetiously, 'A little anorexia is hot.'"

Turns out that Amanda actually had a tropical parasite in her intestines, digesting her food for her. Hmm, are parasites the new binge and purge?

Anyways, men, I'd love to hear what you think. Is it true that someone who looks a little anorexic is hot? Be honest!

Nina Garcia: A poor fashionista's Tim Gunn

Filed under: Style in the News, Books

Nina Garcia The Little Black Book of StyleEven though Elle is my favorite fashion magazine (minus the Kohl's episode), I still have beef with Nina Garcia. She just rubs me the wrong way, and I think it's because she tries too hard. First she is attempting to channel her inner Anna Wintour, which no one can do (at least not in this lifetime). When that didn't work, she moved on to fellow Project Runway star Tim Gunn.
Tim Gunn is fabulous. He didn't have to try because he is just that cool. What started as a little gig on Project Runway turned him into a modern day fashion god. He has authority without being too pushy, he talks and people listen. We love Tim. Because of his wild success, Tim was able to write a book Tim Gunn: A Guide to Quality, Taste, and Style. I read the book and though it's nothing to write home about, it seems it was good enough for Tim to get his own show on Bravo based on the book.

So what does Nina Garcia do? She writes a book of course. The is book called The Little Black Book of Style, which is due to hit shelves on September 4. The book is a "one-stop guide to cultivating a sense of personal style". Hmmm, sounds a bit familiar to me. The book will have illustrations (what fashionista likes reading?) and will let you know what closet essentials are okay to splurge on, as well as a wardrobe checklist.

She may not have her own television show to accompany the book, but she does have fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg on her side. Diane will host the books launch party on September 5th at New York hot spot Socialista. Sounds like fun -- have a drink for me.

Elle designs for Kohls. Yuck!

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Steals and Deals

How did this one slip past me? While being caught up in the swirl of having every celebrity on the planet designing their own clothing line, I guess I didn't even notice that magazines had followed suit. Elle magazine has a collection at Kohls! Oh gees, I just threw up a little bit in my mouth.

Why on earth did anyone think that was a good idea? Anyone who reads Elle doesn't shop at Kohls. Soccer moms shop at Kohls to get their kids back to school outfits, they aren't going into Kohls to get real fashion. And people looking for real fashion certainly aren't stepping their Manolo covered toes into Kohls.

Elle, was Target all booked up for the season so you thought the next best thing was Kohls? Why are you designing clothing anyway? You are a fashion magazine, remember? You write about clothes and show them off on too thin models. I am so disappointed in you. I really am. You were my favorite fashion magazine and now I feel like you cheated on me with the trashy girl up the street. I didn't know you were the type to go against all you believe in for a few measly dollars. You know good and well you wouldn't be caught dead in a $27 dress. Just like you know you don't promote size 18, which is the highest size your cheap clothes go up to.

My head hurts.

We wear the pants: Menswear for Women

Filed under: Clothing, Celebrities with Style

For women's fashion this Fall 2007, we wear the pants (or menswear inspired dresses) because having a bit of "man" in your wardrobe is a total must have.

In Elle's September issue they have fashion maven, Lindsay Lohan, dolled up in daddy's finest. Menswear inspired pieces are a fall fashion staple and can be worn in a very literal way or can be added in small doses to update a casual look.

Some great ways to incorporate menswear into your wardrobe this fall is with silk, sequins, pin-tucks, bow-ties and hats. Key pieces that Elle suggest are:
  • Velvet blazer
  • Sequin pants
  • Vests
  • Shoe-boots
  • White button down shirt
Nothing is sexier than adding a slick fedora to a simple tee shirt and jeans. But if you decide to go all the way with the men's trend like LiLo here; avoid looking like a dude by making sure you show a little cleavage and sexing up your make-up. Those little touches will have the real men all over you.
