Christian Lacroix's Gola collectionFor those of you who believe that sports and fashion go hand in hand, Gola has teamed up with Christian Lacroix to develop a line of haute couture sneakers, embossed and embroidered with a small French fashion house feel. Primark finally wises up

Filed under: Style in the News

You may want to think twice the next time you purchase a cheap designer knock-off:

Recently, it was revealed that British fast-fashion store Primark had been buying clothes from suppliers who used child labor. In light of this, Primark decided to drop three Indian companies -- who make-up approximately 0.04% of the clothing bought for its store -- because the brand discovered the companies were using children for embroidery work.

Dress of the Day: Lotta Stenson Fleur de Sole Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

lotta stenson fleur de sole poppy jersey dress
Perhaps I jumped the gun with Lotta Stenson's Fleur de Sole dress because it sure looked warm enough outside to wear something so bare, but it is, as March always is, windy enough to flip that dress inside out.

Nonetheless, the bright, poppy-colored jersey dress must be had for the gold floral embroidery along the high hemline, gold braid around the scoop neckline that ties in the back, and deep V back.

The dress is available from Bluefly for $176, originally $295. It also come sin a bright, peacock blue.

France's "little hand" shortage

The brief and fleeting spectacle of a runway show is the culmination of months and months of hard work. Much of that work, in the haute couture arena, is done by workers whose skills in the intricate arts of beading, embroidery and other finishings are a big part of delivering that wow moment on the runway. But the workshops of Paris are finding that these workers are in short supply. Many of the artisans are aging and there are not enough new workers interested in the painstaking but low-paid labor. An Associated Press article reports that much of the knowledge of the work will die out once the Parisian "petite mains" or "little hands" retire. Hat blockers, flower makers and cobblers are particularly prized by Chanel, Lacroix and other houses that specialize in elaborate haute couture. One possible solution is to outsource to other countries but for the French, it is hard to part with the idea that made in France has its own unique cachet.
