Superficial Inc.'s Disco Dress is on our radar

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

Superficial Inc.I've got a new designer on my radar thanks to BUST Magazine's most recent email newsletter. Superficial Inc. is a gorgeous line of dresses by designer Lindsey Boland, who has dubbed her creations "unique clothing for free spirits."

I took one peek at her website and was immediately in love. In fact, I had trouble deciding which of her dresses was my favorite: the adorable button sundress, perfect for summer and available in four different color combos or the disco dress, which features an eye-catching graphic embellishment along the empire waistline. The longer I look, the more I find myself lusting over the fuschia disco dress, which retails for $98. This dress could be worn so many different days: play up the disco inspiration at night with bold accessories and heels or go ahead and wear it during the cold winter days by layering it up with knit leggings and boots.

Superficial Inc. is currently based in Chicago, where Lindsey also operates Habit, a boutique dedicated to emerging designers. You can pick up her sassy dresses in person at Habit or online via her website.

Dress of the Day: Roxy Little Miss Printed Babydoll

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

roxy little miss printed dressSince we have Monday off, I'm assuming that you're going to a BBQ of some sort today, and will be hanging out on the backyard patio with a tall iced tea (whether it's spiked is your call) until sundown. You need a cute little sundress!

Now normally, I think of Roxy as a fairly young brand, and usually associate it with surfing teenage girls, but for this Memorial Day weekend, Roxy's Little Miss Printed Babydoll seems so perfect, especially in this gorgeous red and white floral print. The cotton dress has a thin band to create an empire waist, and falls to a flirty mid-thigh length. At just $49.50 at Nordstrom, you won't feel bad if you get a little spot of BBQ sauce on it.

The dress also comes in the same print, but in green.

Dress of the Day: Tiered Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

juicy couture tiered baby doll in tuckerYep, it's still warm here in southern California, but even if it's a bit chillier wherever you are, Spring is coming, and it's time to start preparing your wardrobe. Juicy Couture's pretty little take on the of-the-moment bohemian look is the Tiered babydoll dress in what they are calling "Tucker" brown.

The dress is 100% cotton with spaghetti straps and supported bust. The empire waist opens up into a full skirt that is tiered (hence, the name) with layers of eyelet and dark brown trim. In the Spring, theis dress will look cute with a pair of flat sandals, but for this transition season, shake up the look with a soft cardigan sweater thrown on over top and a pair of wedge-heel pumps.

The dress in part of Neiman Marcus' Last Call Clearance, $70 (originally $280!).

Dress of the Day: Phoebe Couture Pleated Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

phoebe couture pleated dressSince Thursday is the new Friday, we need a dress today that's going to the office first, then off to meet the girls at that new lounge on the Westside.

So maybe you wouldn't actually wear Phoebe Couture's Pleated Dress to work. The dress is 100% black sheer silk with a wide open square neckline that has shoulder straps, and short, puffed sleeves. The dress has a tonal underlay and tonal satin stripes. The loose empire waistline folds into small pleats, but the skirt is straight.

With a pair of sheer black tights and big black platform heels, you'll be fabulously comfortable.

Phoebe Couture's Pleated Dress is on sale at Neiman Marcus for $175, originally $350.

Dress of the Day: James Perse Long Sleeve Empire Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

james perse empire dressI'd like to take a moment to appreciate the person, the designer, the culture, whomever it was, who "invented" the empire waistline. Thanks to the waistline that gathers around the bottom of the bustline, high above the natural waistline, we ladies can breathe a little easier.

Whoever you are, thank you.

And thanks to James Perse for the Long Sleeve Empire Dress is a super-soft jersey material. The deep V neckline plunges to the empire waist, which is embellished with a contrast drawstring. Both the yoke and the ruching on the back of the dress contrast as well. The dress comes in a neautral color called Navajo, perfect as a backdrop for a pair of boots in a kick-start color.

The dress is $212 at ShopBop.

Dress of the Day: Catherine Malandrino Pleated Empire Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

catherine malandrino pleated empire dress in walnutCatherine Malandrino takes two of the season's hottest trends and mashes them up into one gorgeous Pleated Empire Dress: babydoll silhouettes and metallics.

Though the dress is called "walnut," which, I am guessing, refers to the dark brown print and trim in the top, the rest of the dress is really a version of matte gold. The bodice has laser-cut detailing with a deep V-neckline that plunges all the way to the empire waist that's wrapped with a wide shiny sash. The skirt has a box pleat (though you can't tell from looking at the photo). I'd put on a pair of sheer tights with a gold sheen and slip into a pair of sky-high dark brown leather platforms with a pointed toe.

The dress is $501 at Revolve Clothing.

Trend radar: The empire waist

Forget about Marie Antoinette! Clothes this season are channeling another powerful French woman: Josephine. But it's not the powdered wigs or the whalebone corsets -- what we are seeing a lot of this season is Josephine's empire waist.

The empire waist (pronounced "ahm-pier") is a cut that gathers beneath the bustline. What I think most women find surprising about this style is that the empire waist is actually extremely flattering on a variety of bodies. By nipping the dress or the top higher than the natural waistline the empire waist creates a long, elegant silhouette. If you are pear-shaped, for instance, the higher waist draws the eye up toward your bust and your neck.
