YSL, Alexander McQueen and Others Phone 'HOME'

Is this what E.T. would see if he came down for some Reese's Pieces today? The skeletal outline looks pretty ominous, no?

Actually, this is a limited-edition scarf designed by Alexander McQueen in an effort to boost recognition of "HOME," a breathtaking aerial documentary that pleads for a global environmental initiative.

The film "HOME" is being released today (June 5) internationally, with numerous free screenings. It will also air on The National Geographic Channel at 9 pm ET and can be found online at YouTube. Appropriately, it happens to be World Environment Day.

The McQueen scarf, a manipulated representation of the dying Earth morphed into a skull (not your grandmother's silk paisley number, is it?), will be available exclusively at Alexander McQueen boutiques and at alexandermcqueen.com early this month for $285 – but you can pre-order on the site now. Click, click, go, go!

And it's easy to make an impact, just by shopping. Here, a handful of other high-end designers that are getting in on the "HOME" action...

Top 5 ways to green up your wardrobe

Filed under: Style for a Cause, Green Fashion

By this point we've all heard how important it is to buy eco-friendly products, and that includes fashion. But is it all just hype? Just another marketing gimmick employed by corporate America to try and get us to spend more dollars but feel less guilty about doing it? Many companies have been accused of greenwashing, and it's certainly true that buy buy buy is not the way to help our environment.

No matter what though, people will always want to dress in a way that makes them feel good about the way they look. We shouldn't have to compromise style in our quest to save the planet. Sure, we need to adjust our habits, but that doesn't mean that we'll all end up looking like a bunch of dirty hippies. Here's our list of the top 5 ways to really green up your wardrobe.

Swishing: the end of shopping

Filed under: Handbags, Accessories, Style in the News, Clothing, Style for a Cause

A few months ago, Jonathon wrote a post about the environmental impact of fast fashions -- inexpensive, trendy items that you toss out after a season or two of wear.

The wave of awareness about the tolls of fashionable consumption has led to the development of a number of anti-shopping groups ranging from the "Buy nothing day" people to the freegans (people who buy nothing, including food). Somewhere in between is the Ethical Fashion Forum, which promotes among other things, swishing parties.

Swishing parties are clothing swaps in which participants bring their castoffs in exchange for other people's castoffs. These events encourage people to stop shopping, reduce waste and recycle while still allowing a little room for indulgence.
