Flatter Your Figure: Dressing for Formal Events

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Flatter Your Figure

Formal events are often the events for which we want to look our very best. You might be seeing people you haven't seen for a while, or meeting new people you'd like to impress. Either way, you want to look absolutely amazing.

The thing is, formal gowns often show body parts we normally keep covered, like our backs, shoulders, and arms, and they sometimes cling to our stomachs and hips in ways that are unflattering -- not exactly what we're going for on a big night out, right?

Here are some tips for working with your figure when finding a dress for a formal event:

How skimpy is too skimpy for a prom dress?

Filed under: Events: On the Scene, Clothing

It's prom season once again, and, chances are, you've noticed local high school students pulling out all the stops for the "best night of their lives." Those of you who went to prom can attest to how completely disappointing this high-dollar celebration usually turns out to be -- however, this doesn't stop teenagers from trying to desperately out-do one another year after year.

Dress of the Day: Vera Wang Red Jersey Gown

Filed under: Events: On the Scene, Clothing, Dresses

vera wang red jersey gownBecause the red carpet of the Academy Awards is still burning in my brain, all I can see is red and maternity, though last night they weren't together. However, if you happen to be pregnant at your next red carpet event (of which I know you have so many!), Vera Wang's Jersey Gown in scarlet puts both together. In a departure from the usual silk, satin and taffeta for evening wear, the dress is made of super soft, super comfortable stretch knit jersey, is ruched at the bust and at the empire waist, which makes the dress both perfectly comfortable if you don't want to "suck it in," or if you can't (because you've got a baby bump!)

The dress is on sale at Bluefly for $321.30.

StyleFoul: Formal shorts

Filed under: Clothing, Jeans, Celebrity Fashion Mistakes

If you've been trolling through the after-Christmas sales at your favorite mall, you've probably noticed a veritable bounty of what folks in the fashion world call "formal shorts." (Shorts they are; formal they are not.)

Because the formal shorts are the only things that remain on the otherwise pick-over sale racks, I think we can assume that this 5-inch-inseam trend hasn't been a big seller this year.

And thank heavens for that!

Let it be said: formal shorts are not only logically fallacious, they just plain don't make any sense!

Isn't the whole point of winter to have a five-month break from the unflattering monstrosity known as the short? Shouldn't it be enough that we put up with them in the summertime when the weather justifies our willingness to see our otherwise normal-looking legs reduced to inelegant rectangles?

I know that celebrities think they're fabulous (Gwen Stefani, Posh, Kate Moss, et al.). For the rest of us mere mortals with real woman bodies and practical lives, the formal short is quite possibly the worst turn of the fashion wheel we've seen in years. (Yes, formal shorts are worse than skinny jeans AND leggings, my friends. In fact, not since big shoulder pads has the female body been so assaulted by one single style!)

So, as the Oprah show theme song tells us, "Get with the program!" Formal shorts are for the birds! If my pleading alone doesn't convince you, hopefully your measly retail profits will.

Formal dress for plus-sizes

It's been quite a while since we last posted a plus-sized gem. Perhaps the reason for the delay was that we were waiting for something extra-special to come across our radar, like London Times Ruched Cascade dress at Nordstroms. As you can see from the photo, this dress, made of chocolate brown ruched meshing, combines simple sophistication with youthful flirtation. Fitted at the bust and flowing at the hips, the Cascade dress will absolutely play up your feminine figure for just $88.

Good things are worth waiting for, no?

Dress of the Day: Lela Rose Brocade Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

lela rose gold brocade dressSo the countdown to your Holiday party (or Holiday parties, you socialite, you) begins. Styledash wants you to look fabulous, and how could you not look positively stunning in this dress by Lela Rose?

The Strapless Brocade Dress is gold brocade fabric with a wide, banded waist in dark brown with a light trim. The skirt is full, pleated in the front, and falls to just above the knee, perfect for showing off your gams that stretch into a pair of dark brown shoes -- my preference would be a simple high heeled pump so as not to take anything away from the dress. You sure wouldn't, since the dress is $995 at Neiman Marcus.

Kiyonna for the curvy girls

Filed under: Stores We Love, Clothing

kiyonna plus size clothingWe like to cover fashions for the curvy girls, and I've just come across an online boutique that does gorgeous, sophitsticated dresses for women who are size 12 and up called Kiyonna. Kiyonna is actually the name of the brand, and they do dresses, formal wear, and other special occasion clothing. The thing I like about Kiyonna is that for formal and evening wear, the designs are great. We know that plus size or not, sometimes formal wear can get into the strangely bright, almost Prom-dress-like feel.

Kiyonna dresses are sold on their website, as well as in select boutiques.

Maternity evening dresses so you're not a party pooper

Filed under: Holiday Style, Clothing, Dresses, Kids and Babies

black maternity dress for eveningOur friends over at Blogging Baby remind us that just because a woman is pregnant doesn't mean she has to stay at home in maternity sweatpants while everyone else is out partying this Holiday season. They have found three dresses, all of them black, naturally, that are great for the cocktail partying (well, maybe not quite the cocktail part) mama-to-be: strappy empire dress by Liz Lange at Target, strapless lace dress at Due Maternity by Maternal America, and black formal maternity dress at Nicole Maternity Wholesale.

So ladies, don't let a bit of a belly bulge keep you at home. At least, don't let the availability of cute maternity evening wear be the reason you stay home. If you feel like staying home and watching a DVD laying in the fetal position on the floor, well that's another story.
