Smart is the new black

Thank you, thank you, thank you, fashiontribes.com, for giving me my favorite line of the week the month all of 2008 -- smart is the new black. I've long held the opinion that smart girls are sexy, but at times my orations on why Jane Austen heroines (like Elizabeth Bennett) are sexy because they're smart and witty and able to hold their own have been cut short by ditzy girls who forgot to wear a bra.

While we smart girls would ideally like to show off our big, sexy brains in a debate, there is a more subtle approach -- funky eyeglasses. If your SAT scores were low, they won't help you get into the right school, but if you can get a foot in the door, they'll certainly help you look the part.

Just be sure you don't opt for some boring wire frames -- think of glasses as just another accessory, and then make a statement with them. Check out the gallery for some of the hottest new styles from Lenscrafters.

Carbon fiber sunglasses

Being a cyclist, I have a special place in my heart for anything crafted from carbon fiber. The odd thing about my affinity for this light-weight material is that I actually think it's beautiful in addition to being space-agey and advanced. Heck, in my more romantic moments, carbon fiber kind of reminds me of a very rare leather, like python.

Naturally, I love the idea of carbon fiber sunglasses, even if I don't love the uber-sporty shapes most sunglass makers use in the creation of these super light shades. Sever, a small design company within Lapo Elkman's new venture Italia Independent, produces street-worthy carbon fiber sunglasses. Not too aggressive or sporty, these shades are the perfect example of modern, unisex sun protection.

Harley Davidson eyeglasses

So maybe Harleys (you know, the motorcycles with a cult-like following) aren't your thing. Maybe loud tailpipes, leather and the open road don't get your motor running. But what about the Harley Davidson eyeglasses line?

With over 66 different models, these are eyeglasses not just for the Sturgis set. Instead, Harley Davidson's got a little something for just about everybody, from club kids to spectacle-wearers "of a certain age".

Yet no matter the design or the demographic, what remains the same is the aesthetic: sleek lines and sporty but stylish design.

So while these specs may never be as fetishized as the bikes themselves, there's a lot to be said for the eyewear. My only question: when will Honda, BMW and Ducati come out with their eyeglasses lines?

Stylish visionary

It's your well-deserved vacation. You're on the beach, sipping a cool drink, basking away in the sun. The paperback which has been collecting dust on your bedside table for the past year starts calling your name. You pick it up, and turn to the first page. To your dismay, the print seems impossibly small. Did the word shrink? Are you getting older? Can you squint through your sunglasses? How did this happen?

Does this sound familiar? If you're a book worm and a sun-lover, you have to check out Amy Sacks hip reading sunglasses. Sacks' collection features simple and clean forms in a variety of magnification strength. Modestly priced, these reading glasses offer a stylish alternative to the dowdy lower-range reading glasses you can get at the local drugstore. Price: $105.
