Golden Globes Make-up Trends

Freida PintoThis year brought some big changes in red carpet makeup -- namely, a serious lack of it. We've gotten so used to the heavy, dark, smoky eyes and bold red lips on even the youngest of actresses that seeing anything less is ... well, a little shocking. But, at the same time, completely refreshing.

American Idol Makeup Artist Mezhgan's Tips for Natural Looking Makeup - Make {me} gorgeous!

Filed under: Cosmetics, Celebrities with Style, Beauty Tips

Mezhgans No Makeup Look

Mezhgan's philosophy is that the goal of wearing makeup is to get compliments on how pretty you look, not how good your makeup looks. This week she has some tips to help you look stunning without looking like you're wearing a lot of makeup, like our beautiful model India De Beaufort.

    Model: India De Beaufort
    Photographer: zaazphotography
    Makeup artist: Mezhgan
    Products: me by (me)zhgan

    Start With A Great Canvas
Most importantly you want to have a great canvas to start from. This is where your foundation comes in. Mezhgan recommends using a liquid foundation over a primer because it makes it go on smoother and last a bit longer.

    Model: India De Beaufort
    Photographer: zaazphotography
    Makeup artist: Mezhgan
    Products: me by (me)zhgan
Get the look with luminous (me) primer and foundation.

Apply Foundation for an Even Tone
You want to use your liquid foundation to even out your skin tone, not necessarily cover any flaws. This is where so many people go wrong!

    Model: India De Beaufort
    Photographer: zaazphotography
    Makeup artist: Mezhgan
    Products: me by (me)zhgan
Get the look with luminous (me) primer and foundation.

    Concealer for Extra Coverage
Use a concealer to take care of anything that needs a little extra covering up, like blemishes or dark circles.

    Model: India De Beaufort
    Photographer: zaazphotography
    Makeup artist: Mezhgan
    Products: me by (me)zhgan
Get the look with flawless (me) concealer and perfecting powder.

    Powder Sets the Canvas
Set your make up by gently brushing on translucent powder, which won't alter the color of your foundation. This method leaves you looking flawless and gives you coverage where you need it when you need it instead of all over.

    Model: India De Beaufort
    Photographer: zaazphotography
    Makeup artist: Mezhgan
    Products: me by (me)zhgan
Get the look with flawless (me) concealer and perfecting powder.

    A Bit of Blush
Next dust a bit of a subtle blush color starting at the apples of your cheeks and sweeping through the hairline. Be careful not to go too far in on the face close to the nose. It will look unnatural. You can also mix a highlighter along the top of your cheek to give a subtle glow.

    Model: India De Beaufort
    Photographer: zaazphotography
    Makeup artist: Mezhgan
    Products: me by (me)zhgan
Get the look with cheeky (me) multi-color blush.

    Brighten Your Eyes
Take a light shadow color and dust across the lid to brighten the eyes and open them up a little.

    Model: India De Beaufort
    Photographer: zaazphotography
    Makeup artist: Mezhgan
    Products: me by (me)zhgan
Get the look with naturally (me) eye shadow palette.

    Subtly Define Your Eyes
Smudge a taupe or brown shadow/pencil in your natural lash line. This will define your eye but still not look like you are wearing liner.

    Model: India De Beaufort
    Photographer: zaazphotography
    Makeup artist: Mezhgan
    Products: me by (me)zhgan
Get the look with naturally (me) eye shadow palette.

    Embrace the Eyelash Curler
Use an eyelash curler to curl your lashes. This instantly opens up your eyes!

    Model: India De Beaufort
    Photographer: zaazphotography
    Makeup artist: Mezhgan
    Products: me by (me)zhgan
Get the look with reveal (me) eyelash curler.

    Enhance With Mascara
Follow up with a few coats of mascara to further define your eyes. Make sure to replace your mascara often to avoid clumping, not to mention bacteria!

    Model: India De Beaufort
    Photographer: zaazphotography
    Makeup artist: Mezhgan
    Products: me by (me)zhgan
Get the look with look at (me) volumizing mascara.

Yes, Urban Decay's Primer Potion really is that awesome

Primer PotionAfter hearing endless rave reviews about Urban Decay's Primer Potion, we were a wee bit skeptical. The Potion, which one would apply to eyelids as a foundation layer, promises to make eye make-up more vibrant, longer lasting, and un-crease-able (that's a word now, by the way). Could this tiny little wand and strange, beige liquid really keep make-up on our eyes longer than usual? As it turns out, yeah. Yeah, it totally can. And we think we're in love.

Hard Candy branches out into fragrances

Do you remember Hard Candy? The beauty line that every blue-blooded pre-tween had some interaction with during such sadistic childhood rituals like school dances and first day of school appearances.

Well, they kind of don't want to make make-up anymore. We know, weird. As of late, the brand has been practically giving all of its glitter eye shadow and coal eyeliner away for free, offering up to 50% off on most items at the brand's site.

Don't call them Mother Theresa just yet, though. There's a method to this oh so cheap madness. The company is trying to phase out its beauty line, most likely because of slagging sells, so it can focus on "new strategies."

In the meantime, the Hard Candy fragrance that launched last fall is still going strong. The fruity scent will be accompanied with a shower gel and a body lotion in the near future.

Estee Lauder, put THAT on me!

We saw this display of Estee Lauder's new Signature Blush at Lord & Taylor and got all excited! In particular, we were interested in the two-tone blends in the front row.

I'm always up for something cool, so I asked Estee Lauder to put that bright white and pink shade, second from the left, on me. Read on to see!

Time Balm is...well, it's da Bomb!

We told you about the amazing time Balm -- concealer and anti-wrinkle cream, you can even sleep in it! -- in the post Quick Kit for New Moms. Usually one mention is enough to get it out of our system, but we can't stop talking about this product!

Friends are used to us raving about the latest and greatest, but even they noticed that our evangelism was particularly amped up for time Balm. We keep pulling it out of our bag and forcing friends and strangers to just try it. We even started selling the friend who told us about it.

"I guess I need to go put some on," she said.

"Here, you can use mine," we replied.

The high low high point was the moment in Sephora when we interrupted someone who works there, you know, a make up professional, to say, "No, NO don't get that one, try the lightest color of time Balm, it's called Lighter than Light, it will work much better with her complexion." And then we went to get it for them.

Finally we realized that telling people one at a time was taking too long, and remembered our pulpit here at StyleList blog. So, listen up: this inexpensive ($17) little pot of makeup is magic. Great coverage. Doesn't get all creepy old lady crepey. Layers well under other stuff, like eyeshadow. Easy to use. Lasts forever -- just a dab will do you.

If you're not convinced now, there's nothing else we can do, but at least we tried to save the world from looking tired!

Black lip gloss: from the runway to real life

Fall is a great time to try out darker shades of nail polish, eyeshadow, and lip color. But how dark is too dark? Yves Saint Laurent sent black-as-night lips down the runway during its fall fashion show, and the company will offer the signature shade for sale next month. (You can pre-order a tube of "Pur Black" here for $28.)

But though it may come as a surprise, you don't have to be an avant-garde fashionista to work this look. Even mainstream cosmetic companies, like Lancome, are in on the trend. Lancome's ink-black "Piha" gloss will go on sale, as part of a set, in November. Unlike the YSL version, Lancome's is glittery, and meant to be layered over the red lipstick that it is sold with.

So while matte, black lipstick is still a fashion miss, these high-shine black glosses don't have to be. Aaron May, Lancôme's new artistic director, even suggests using "Piha" as a vampy liquid eyeshadow, which seems like a winning way to make this trend more glam than goth.
