Forever 21 set to takeover Times Square

Forever 21 Moves Into Times Square

When Mid-Westerners think of New York City, we imagine images of Broadway plays, bustled streets, 5-star restaurants, and swanky boutiques come to mind. So the addition of a low brow fast fashion haven like Forever 21 smack dab in the middle of Times Square will probably be disheartening because, well, who doesn't have one of those in their town?

Not known to do anything small, New York is preparing to welcome a massive 100,000-square-foot shopping establishment in midtown, taking over the space formerly filled by Tower Records.

On the new shop, Forever 21 senior vice-president Christopher Lee says, "Our vision has always been to get a bigger box."

So what exactly is in Times Square? The famed NYC hub used to be home to adult-themed stores, drug dealers and hookers until Mayor Rudolph Giuliani cleaned it up in the 1990s. While the XXX shops have since returned, the district remains a hotspot for tourists looking to do a little shopping, or just get a taste of the Big Apple.

J.C. Penney opened a 15,000-square-foot temporary, or ''pop-up'' store, in Times Square on March 3, 2006. Part of the biggest marketing campaign of the retail store's 104 years in business, the pop-up was an attempt to give the public a new and contemporary look at the chain. The store, which was only be opened for 24 days, featured Warhol-esque posters and plasma screen TVs among 22 kiosks where customers could order merchandise, play games or download music.

Toys R' Us is a Times Square mainstay, that generally sees enormous crowds for its Black Friday sales.

Swatch is another Times Square fixture, shown here during a promotion with the popular Blue Man Group performance troupe.

Swatch's stay in Manhattan hasn't been without controversy. This racy billboard (that depicts bunnies in sexual positions) caused quite a stir when it went up in 2004.

Swatch isn't the only company that's turned heads with their advertising. This recent CK ad featuring a naked Eva Mendes attracted national attention.

But Eva's nudie pics were no match for this 2005 CK stunt, in which live models partied away for passing shoppers.

Juicy Couture Opens NY Shop

Filed under: Style in the News

It has been said that if our country were to be hit by some huge asteroid everything would be destroyed -- plants, animals, humans -- except for those nasty little cock roaches. Some how, they would end up on the top of the food chain.

Topshop's American debut delayed

And sometimes, things are just too good to be true.

For months, we've been celebrating and hyping Topshop's arrival in New York this fall. Finally, after months of checking via the fast fashion mecca's e-commerce site, we were going to be able to buy harlequin skirts and vintage denim shorts in person.

But alas, this will not be happening -- or at least not next month.

WWD reports
there has been a bit of a set back in the construction of the massive 40,000 square foot site, and as a result, Topshop will not be opening at 478 Broadway until November. Bummer.

However, don't go crying just yet. Today, the retailer launched a US version of its e-commerce, which means you won't have to pay extra for international shipping! So yeah, go shopping. Now.

Europe loves Abercrombie & Fitch

Filed under: Style in the News

While us Americans, for the most part, stopped wearing Abercrombie & Fitch graphic tees in middle school along with Doc Martens sandals, our European counterparts just can't seem to get enough of the cotton tops with cheeky sayings.

After launching a rather successful flagship in London earlier this year (its gross annual sales top $50 million), the mall favorite is opening its second store in Copenhagen, Denmark.

DCMA opens it's flagship store

Just the other day I wrote about how we will probably continue to see Benji and Joel Madden's DCMA line on Paris Hilton as long as she continues her faux-mance with the former. Surprise, surprise, look who showed up to the DCMA flagship store opening in head to toe DCMA gear.

Another important observation from the same event is that dating Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, respectively (or un-respectively, depending on how you look at it) has significantly upped the Madden boys' star power and clout in the fashion world. That's not to say anyone thinks they're the next House of Versace. But, they are getting tons more press coverage for what would otherwise be another boring celebrity line that nobody talks about.

Obviously Nicole Richie was at the flagship opening supporting her baby daddy and showing off her fab post pregnancy bod. And you already know that Paris Hilton was there, but did I mention she was wearing what must be the world's best push-up bra? Christina Milian, fittingly decked herself all out in leather for the rock star occasion. Even Pete Wentz showed up wearing really dorky (yet somehow sort of cute) glass. Hey, at least he wasn't wearing guyliner. Of course Nicky Hilton attended, looking thinner than ever. She's disappearing right before our very eyes. And last but not least, Ja-Rule rocked the red carpet proudly sporting a DCMA hoodie.

To see all the celebs that came out for the Madden brothers' big night, browse through the gallery.
