You can wear the most gorgeous dress, or put together the most flattering jeans and top, but so many people make a mistake when it comes to the last accessory they put on -- their shoes. You might not realize it, but the wrong shoes can take you from looking long and lean to appearing short and stumpy.

Two trends that we can expect to continue through the fall season are color-blocking and animal prints. And, as you are probably well-aware, purple is the color this autumn, although there's something even more popular -- saving money in this uncertain economy.

Where have these adorable flats been all our lives? The wild cacophony of fall colors, the textured canvas and mary jane cum belt buckle strap have us coming up with entire outfits based on these shoes. They'd look perfect with a knee length skirt or with our orange fall jacket. Sure, they're supposed to be Spring shoes, but all that means is that we can now buy them at a 55% discount. While we get as excited as the next girl about a gorgeous $400 shoe, our budget doesn't exactly allow us to indulge in those items too often. Or, you know, maybe ever.

You may be under the impression that Geox, the Italian maker of breathable shoes, only makes sneakers and shoes for kids - but you'd be wrong. They also make a line of fashionable shoes for women - case in point, the 'Victoria' in tumbled metallic leather, as pictured above.

This shoe would be a glittery accent to your outfit - almost like jewelry - and it's comfortable and "breathable" like all Geox shoes. They'd be so prim and proper if it weren't for that outrageously oversized buckle and the sexy cut - they're practically sandals!

A bright ballet flat is the perfect shoe to take you from day to night, office to ladies' night, because it's so easy to pair with a variety of looks. It will look chic with a pair of tailored slacks for work and it'll give a pop of color to a pair of dark jeans. It'll also look fab with a cute little dress, and it gives you an excuse to add some bright, chunky jewelry to your ensemble.

Though we're inclined to run around all summer in nothing but the exact same pair of dark brown flip flops that "go with" everything from our ethnic print maxi dress to a pair of cut-offs, there are occasions when we may have to wear real shoes. It doesn't mean we have to be uncomfortable in a pair of skin-pinching, back-breaking stiletto heels. As we mentioned in an earlier post, this weekend we had a blister emergency. After a false start, Band Aids saved the day, but we still wandered into Banana Republic, like a zombie, to see if they had inexpensive backless sandals we could buy and wear out of the store.

We're shaking our heads at ourselves, even writing that.

Oh, please, admit you've done the same thing, possibly more than once. It's slightly less reprehensible when you buy the $4 red checkered material flip flops at Walgreens, but it's the same behavior. Blowing cash on an impulse buy is practically a national pass-time.

Oh, Keds! How do we love thee? Let us count the ways.

The white canvas and leather lace ups stayed on our feet during everyday during elementary school. And as adults, we always make sure our closets include at least two pairs of adorable printed skimmers.
