Forever 21 set to takeover Times Square

Forever 21 Moves Into Times Square

When Mid-Westerners think of New York City, we imagine images of Broadway plays, bustled streets, 5-star restaurants, and swanky boutiques come to mind. So the addition of a low brow fast fashion haven like Forever 21 smack dab in the middle of Times Square will probably be disheartening because, well, who doesn't have one of those in their town?

Not known to do anything small, New York is preparing to welcome a massive 100,000-square-foot shopping establishment in midtown, taking over the space formerly filled by Tower Records.

On the new shop, Forever 21 senior vice-president Christopher Lee says, "Our vision has always been to get a bigger box."

So what exactly is in Times Square? The famed NYC hub used to be home to adult-themed stores, drug dealers and hookers until Mayor Rudolph Giuliani cleaned it up in the 1990s. While the XXX shops have since returned, the district remains a hotspot for tourists looking to do a little shopping, or just get a taste of the Big Apple.

J.C. Penney opened a 15,000-square-foot temporary, or ''pop-up'' store, in Times Square on March 3, 2006. Part of the biggest marketing campaign of the retail store's 104 years in business, the pop-up was an attempt to give the public a new and contemporary look at the chain. The store, which was only be opened for 24 days, featured Warhol-esque posters and plasma screen TVs among 22 kiosks where customers could order merchandise, play games or download music.

Toys R' Us is a Times Square mainstay, that generally sees enormous crowds for its Black Friday sales.

Swatch is another Times Square fixture, shown here during a promotion with the popular Blue Man Group performance troupe.

Swatch's stay in Manhattan hasn't been without controversy. This racy billboard (that depicts bunnies in sexual positions) caused quite a stir when it went up in 2004.

Swatch isn't the only company that's turned heads with their advertising. This recent CK ad featuring a naked Eva Mendes attracted national attention.

But Eva's nudie pics were no match for this 2005 CK stunt, in which live models partied away for passing shoppers.

Black denim, thrashed within an inch of its life, is hot for fall. And, judging by Martin Margiela's Spring 2009 collection, will continue to be hot through that season, too. So what's a girl on a budget to do?

There's a war going on, the economy is in the pooper, New Orleans is still a disaster zone. But, with all that's going on, George Bush still has time to worry about an issue very close to all Stylelist's readers' hearts -- fashion. Mr. Prez just passed an anti-counterfeit bill!

Why aren't you wearing this? Cable Knit Cabbie

We've said it before, and we'll say it again -- we love wearing hats. We like baseball caps, fedoras, berets, you name it. They're a fantastic way to add a little something to an outfit without cluttering up the look.

Additionally, the right hat can take you effortlessly from summer to fall, which is how we plan to use this Cable Knit Cabbie hat. It's only $8.80 at Forever 21, so even if you get just a few uses out of it this season, your cost per wear is low, and we think that once you have this hat in your possession, you'll find plenty of ways to wear it.

Why aren't you wearing this? Curved Design Cuff

As you transition your wardrobe from summer to fall, you need all the help you can get. You can't go straight from flirty floral frocks to thick and cozy sweaters, so you need pieces that help the more summery outfits look a little more substantial. That can be done with shoes and sweaters, but the right jewelry can give the same effect.

This Curved Design Cuff, $8.80 at Forever 21, is a great example. Cuffs can be worn year round, but the dark metal makes this piece just a little more autumnal. The floral design makes it easy to pair it with something a little lighter, airier, and more floaty. Throw on a denim jacket, floaty top, jeans, and heels, and you've got a fabulous transitional ensemble!

A plot of land in LA that was a productive community farm for more than 20 years is once again the center of controversy and political intrigue, with tramptastic and disposable clothiers Forever 21 in the thick of the dispute.

The LA Times reports that the 14 acres that used to be South Central Farm, and that activists are still trying to turn back into a community farm, is being considered as a site for a warehouse and distribution center for Forever 21. Besides losing the farm, those against the development are also upset about the additional traffic and environmental impact of the 2,400 (!) daily truck trips that would be created by the center.

Why aren't you wearing this? Vintage Flower Bead Ring

Vintage touches are one of our favorite things. We love pieces that look old enough to have a story about them, like, "Over 150 years ago, my grandmother's grandmother had to sell all of her jewelry in order to keep the estate, but this was her favorite ring, and her favorite housemaid kept an eye on who bought the ring, got a job there, and stole it back! Can you believe it?"

Why aren't you wearing this? Emerald Brooch

You know that tank top or tee that's in your closet -- the one that's a pretty color, but just kind of plain? You probably try to liven it up with necklaces or by layering it with other tops, and that's great. However, don't underestimate the power of a really pretty brooch.

On a tank, if the straps are the right width, you can scrunch up one side and close the brooch around it to give your neckline a bit of an asymmetrical feel. Or, if you have a V neck tee, place the brooch at the bottom of the V to add some punch.

And if you love it, and you have the cash, there's no reason not to spend $50 on a headband. However, if you're short on cash but still want the look, there are plenty of options.

One place that's great to shop for cheap little accessories that you'll only wear a few times is Forever 21, which is where we found this Textured Ribbon Headband for ... wait for it ... only $2.80! Seriously! And it's cute!

Forever 21: knocking it off?

Filed under: Stores We Love, Style in the News

Everyone knows that Forever 21 is in the business of selling cheap runway knock offs, sometimes teetering on the edge of design piracy. The company's philosophy and background approaches fashion from a cut and dry business standpoint, building one of the most profitable retail chains in the country with little or no major fashion clout to speak of.

In fact, the company is run by an evangelical Christian couple, who immigrated to the US in 1981 from South Korea. They noticed the success of the fashion industry professionals in the area where they worked and decided: hey why can't we do that? Their rags to riches story has become the stuff of legends -- and nasty, bitter rumors.

Up to now, their business model has centered around frugality, shrewdness, and no-name, hack designers -- building an empire on 'copycat' fashion. However, after a rash of run-ins with top designers and piracy legislation being introduced in congress, the successful newcomers might have to reinvent their business.

Let's face it, most of us are down with buying a Target knock off if it means saving a few bucks. Is that wrong? A piece of legislation called the Design Piracy Prohibition Act is being pushed by a few high end fashion peeps who want to stomp out the blossoming industry of legal 'knock-offery.' One of these fashion elites, Diane Von Furstenberg, just happens to be one of the people who has settled with Forever 21 over design infringements -- now she's going after Target.

Gwen Stefani sues Forever 21!

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

Oh thank you Gwen! If I had a reason to sue that cheap-not-chic retailer, Forever 21, I would in a heartbeat. I hate that store. I went inside once and almost fainted at the smell of cheap synthetic fabric. Once I got my bearings and managed to not pass out, I broke out into hives (true story). Cheap places like that include digging in barrels and fighting off teenagers often gets me all fired up. Nasty.

Perez Hilton has reported that super-mama-singing-mega-star Gwen Stefani is suing the retailer for knocking off her designs. Perez writes...

"In the suit, filed in Los Angeles, Stefani claims that Forever 21 has stolen designs from her Harajku Lovers and L.A.M.B. clothing lines."

I didn't think lambs were very violent creatures but in the fashion industry sometimes you've gotta be tough. Maybe Gwen's maternal instincts are making her protective of her babies ... her clothing lines. I am not sure how this lawsuit is going to pan out because the basis of Forever 21's business is to knock things off. And if its any consolation, the knock offs look just awful -- no one will ever think you are wearing Harajku Lovers or L.A.M.B.

P.S.- the new L.A.M.B fragrance is out of this world, I am going to pick up a bottle at Nordies tomorrow.

Forever 21 to supply luxury at cheap prices

Twelve by TwelveThe super-cheap store Forever 21 recently announced that it will be expanding to include a slightly more sophisticated luxury line, Twelve by Twelve. The website will be launched later this month, followed by in-store additions and a stand-alone in Beverly Hills.

I surprised myself when I went into Forever 21 for the first time, expecting an obnoxious place catering specifically to the popular girls in high school, and bought quite a few tops for myself. However, I'm not sure how I feel about this Twelve by Twelve line. Sure, I've only seen two photos, but it looks a bit ridiculous, not sophisticated. Maybe these clothes would have been in with the rich crowd a few decades ago, but I think the 2000s call for a little more than animal prints and shiny fabrics. Also, what the hell is the mannequin on the right wearing on her poor little head? Looks like a flower pot/windmill hybrid.
