Michael Stipe launches a line of shirts for Lacoste - Celebrity designers

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrity Fashion Mistakes

As you've probably noticed, we're all about celebrity designers here at Style List, but somehow we never have very high expectations for their output. The latest collaboration between REM's Michael Stipe and classic high-end designer Lacoste is no exception. According to Rolling Stone, Stipe has put his creative touch on a new line of Lacoste's alligator-encrusted tennis shirts, and they're uhh -- how should we put this -- a little fugly unique.

Sweater vests for men - are you feelin' it?

Filed under: Clothing, Vintage and Retro, Men

With cooler weather coming just around the corner, we've noticed that all of the conditions are right for a sweaterific fall and winter for men's fashion. Cardigans, turtlenecks, and yes, even the nerdiest of all -- sweater vests -- seem to be turning up in all sorts of fall collections. While the sweater vest is an easy way to add some colorful layers to your wardrobe, we kinda have to wonder if men are really going to embrace the sweater vest this season -- or if that's just wishful thinking.

From what we've gathered, this year's sweater vest look is all about the pattern -- and the nerdier the better. Forget solids or pinstripes, its all about checks, argyles, or a bold houndstooth. Basically, anything reminiscent of an ugly retro sweater that your parents dressed you in as a toddler. We like the depth that a SV can bring to an outfit, but we don't expect to see many on the street. What do you think? Is the sweater vest going to be a hot item this fall?

eBay WTF of the Day: Ludicrous stirrup pants

Help. . .?
These pants are totally freaking ridiculous. There, I said it.

There almost isn't more to say. We don't normally post these. We see a lot of things on eBay in this category we shall call Ludicrous.

By deeming an eBay item Ludicrous, we mean that nobody's actually going to buy it, unless they're making a costume of some kind. And really, probably not then either, because as in this case, the items tend to cost upward of the fifty cents they might be worth at a yard sale.

I have no love for nude hose

It's a dilemma that plagues womankind: Is it better to go bare-legged or to wear hose?

The answer unfortunately depends on the circumstances. For instance, if you have a important business meeting to attend, nude hose are probably the way to go. But if it's something a little more casual -- like a cocktail party in the winter or a wedding on a chilly day, you're better off going bare-legged than subjecting other to the shiny-sausage casing abomination we know as nude hose.

Why do I say this? Well, the main reason is that I believe that nude hose look truly awful. Don't believe me? Well, how about:

1. Tess Megill in Working Girl

Good movie, Hunky Harrison Ford, but unforgivably bad 80s business fashions.

2. Jane Fonda's workout videos

Love her or hate her, no one can defend her work-out wear.

3. Sophia Petrillo from The Golden Girls

Don't get me wrong, I love The Golden Girls, but emulating retired-Floridan fashions is not something I can condone.

Stylefoul: The fanny pack

Filed under: Handbags, Accessories, Clothing, Celebrity Fashion Mistakes

The first time I saw a fanny pack, I was with my family on vacation in Yellowstone National Park. At first, I wasn't quite sure what I was looking at. Was it a belt? Was it a backpack? Within a few short months, the trend caught on. Everyone from Hulk Hogan to the short-shorts-wearing tourist at Disneyland was wearing one.

(If you're reading this in the UK, please substitute "fanny" for "bum" or for "belly." This post actually has nothing to do with what you think of when you think of the word "fanny." Not that you should be thinking about the "fanny" to begin with – this is a family-friendly site!)

But the fanny pack's success was blessedly short-lived. Once fashion editors and tourists got wind of the inherent problems of adding a ruck-sack to your waistline, and saw the bold neon-colored nylon fabric, the fanny pack was booted from the platform of popularity faster than you can "Jessica Simpson".

To sum up the foulness of the fanny pack, I'll leave you with one last thought -- progress is worth pursuing – however, combining a back-pack with a belt is not what I call progress.
