Paul Smith Talks Trash!

Filed under: Style in the News

Hop to it! Paul Smith and his latest innovation. Photo by Tim Whitby, Getty Images

"It" Brit designer, Paul Smith, has come up with a novel way to encourage Londoners not to litter as part of the Design Museum's Super Contemporary Exhibition at Covent Garden Piazza in London.

The just unveiled five-foot rabbit rubbish bin is best described as a "throw your trash into the bunny basket" carnival-like game (though it's not rigged). No one stands next to the receptacle yelling "step right up!" and, thank God, there isn't anyone guessing your weight! But it does light up whenever garbage is deposited. Score!

You don't win a cheap stuffed animal if you make the shot (and you better make the shot!). Three dunks in a row doesn't equal the huge, top-shelf prize. And, no, you won't have a goldfish in a Ziploc to take home. But you will be doing the right -- and apparently, now stylish -- thing!

Sadly, at the moment, it's just part of an art exhibit, but we could totally see one in front of Topshop! and really hope next time we hop the pond the sidewalks are rabbit ridden.

Hurricane chic

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing

Fashion designers take inspiration from everywhere -- movies, books, the street, a dream -- but severe weather? Sure, why not?

Amid destruction lies art, and those with an extraordinarily artistic eye are able to find beauty in the path of the Katrinas and Gustavs. For example, Candice Kenmuir found inspiration in Hurricane Wilma, using the debris she found afterward to create four designs for her senior class exhibition project.

Ugly Betty likes trashy bags

Filed under: Handbags, Accessories, Celebrities with Style, Style for a Cause

If you follow Ugly Betty, you might have noticed Betty carrying around a funky new bag (like the one pictured here) in the "Odor in the Court" episode (also, if you don't watch the show, you really, really need to). The bag wasn't something chosen by the costume designers on set; it was actually a gift to America Ferrera (who plays Betty -- seriously, watch the show!) from Rebagz, and she liked it so much that she decided to wear it on the show.

Aside from being a cool enough bag to be featured on a show about fashion (even if it was carried by the least fashionable character), Rebagz items are all made from things like juice packs and rice sacks -- items that would typically be thrown away, but instead were reused to create a stunning and unusual item.

If the multicolor tote isn't quite your style, don't give up -- Rebagz has a number of bags in different colors and styles, so you're sure to find one that suits your personality.

Paris Hilton's trash fetches big money on eBay

At first you might think it makes sense -- of course people would want to buy Paris Hilton's used stuff. Tacky and mind-numbingly stupid though she may be, the woman can dress. But we're not talking about shirts, shoes, or fancy hats -- we're talking about trash.

Actual garbage.

In a recent eBay auction, the seller HollywoodStarTrash.com sold an empty can of gourmet dog food (presumably fed to that ratty pooch Hilton carts around like a fashion accessory), a used toothbrush, and two envelopes sent to the famous-for-nothing media icon while she was "finding herself" in the slammer. The food can went for $305, as did the toothbrush, while the envelopes sold for a whopping $510.

Even her used Coke cans are worth $51.

What I find most surprising is that people buy this stuff without having any way of knowing it belonged to Paris in the first place. I could tell you this can of Sprite I'm holding right now was once touched by Paris Hilton, and someone would pay me $50 for it. How could anyone possibly be so gullible Any takers?
