Jennife Lopez: glittering dress-up

Filed under: Cosmetics, Celebrities with Style

Jennifer Lopez always has a glow about her, as if she was dipped in shimmering star dust. Her nails are just as glamorous as the rest of her, with a subtle but distinct pink shine. If you're a glitzy girl, then Jenny's style is the way to go. Her nails are just a little longer than some other ladies wear, and have a bedazzled glaze, like grown up body glitter made especially for nails. Why aren't you wearing this? Glitter Retro Hoops

It's Friday night and you're looking for the perfect outfit. The only thing clean and unwrinkled is your trusty black dress, and you have some cute shoes, but it just seems a little boring -- you want to stand out. And, as we're sure you know, the easiest way to make that happen is by adding some fierce accessories.

Nail Polish Summer School: To bling or not to bling

A little visual jazz on your fingers and toes can go a long way toward driving away the blues and beating the doldrums. It's cheaper than doing drugs, and also not illegal. And it can be such a creative outlet! From glitterly gold stickers to 3-D ceramic flowers you can even get a photo transfered on to your nails!

We recommend avoiding something like the screw in handcuff nail dangle pictured here (just $14.99!) if you have a court date. On the other hand, if you're feeling a little stuck in a rut this brightness at your fingertips is sure to cheer you up.

Where do you rate on the bling continuum?

Glittery Toms, but why?

Let's be honest. There isn't anything even remotely attractive about the overall design of Toms shoes. But the charity aspect of the brand is what makes the Argentine slip ons so appealing -- for every pair of shoes purchased a child in need will get a pair for free.

So, I have the utmost respect for anyone who has invested their hard-earned monies into the brand that creates the slightly ugly but "unique" flats.

With that, Blake Mycoskie -- the head designer of Toms -- was so very, very wrong for creating this gold bedazzled pair at right.

Whoa! Talk about a complete eye soar. These would only be a appropriate for a few Disney fiends aching for a similar pair of shoes like the ones Aladdin might have worn in his animated flick, but for everybody else --- this is simply a "no-go."

What do you think?

How old is too old when it comes to glitter?

glitter faceI have a female friend that is 35 years old and every time she goes out, she insists on splashing glitter all over her face. I told her that a little on her eyes would be okay but that she is too old to be putting glitter all over her face. She looks like a circus clown. My question is, at what age do you think women should stop wearing glitter?

Yikes, there is no right age for looking like a glitter coated circus clown and kudos to you for telling your friend she looks like a fool because it sounds like she does. But to more clearly answer your question, I would say that 29 is the cut off for a face full of glitter. To me once you turn 30 you should have definitely mastered the application of glittery cosmetics.

Now glitter is the trend in cosmetics for Fall 2008 so chances are that your friend is going to get her hands on some. Steer her in the direction of some glitter eyeliner -- it's fun and doesn't end up all over your face. I can almost bet that she will get twice as many compliments with that than her disco fever face.

Good luck!

Fall 2008 Beauty Trend: Glitter Eye

Fall 2008 Beauty Trend: Glitter Eye
I love glitter. I mean what girl doesn't like the shiny stuff? I have been wearing glitter on my eyes for years and years. I can clearly remember myself as a teen heading off to baby-sit with a fresh coat of glitter on my eyelids only to hear my mother shout "Get that crap off of your eyes, you will scare the kids." Newsflash Mama, kids like glitter too.

Glitter may have never left for me but for the rest of the population it's probably been a while since you have rocked it. This coming Fall has been dubbed by MAC Cosmetics as the "season of the glitter eye." I am sure a lot of you just jumped back in horror with images of disco balls and drag queens but fear not because there are many ways to wear this trend without looking absolutely ridiculous.

Go wild: If you want to go wild with this trend there are some awesome beauty products that you should try out. MAC's glitter eyeliner is a personal favorite of mine and comes in a bunch of fun colors. Another great item to try is glitter mascara; this look should be reserved for evening only and be careful not to rub your eyes too much (glitter in the eyes hurts).

Go subtle:
If the thought of glitter has you running scared you can go easy with the trend and try a shimmery eye shadow or apply a little glitter lotion to your legs or chest. NARS body glow lotion smells great and will give you the glitter affect without going overboard.

Shoes of the Day: Hollywould Lauren Glitter Lace Pumps

hollywould lauren glitter lace pumpOne of the reasons we love/hate Holiday parties is the shoes we have/get to wear. On the one hand, we love that we "get" to wear pretty little party shoes with shiny, sparkly things to match the jewel tone cocktail dresses and upswept hair we'll be wearing. On the other hand, it's winter, and pretty little party shoes in the snow or rain don't do well. For this reason, we are reluctant to wear our $500 Jimmy Choo gold sandals and ruin them.

Fortunately, we have Hollywould for Target. Like other more expensive designers, Hollywould has gone the way of Isaac and others and has created a collection for Target. The "Lauren" black lace and glitter pumps that feature a sweet little black satin bow are perfect for that little black dress you'll be wearing to your Holiday party, but you won't feel bad if they only make it through the end of the night, because they're only $29.99.

Pregnant women deserve to be fashionable, too

maternity wear sequinI have never been pregnant (thank goodness) so I can only imagine how hard it is to keep up appearances while toting around a 7-8 lb baby in your belly. That is why I applaud apparel retailers like Pea in the Pod and all of the designers that design maternity wear.

That being said, I have to hold my applause on this look and instead hold the rim of my toilet. My goodness, this outfit is bad. I saw the ad in Vogue's September issue and immediately felt badly for all of the poor defenseless pregnant women out there who saw it.

Out of 840 pages of fashion I am sure that was the only pregnant lady selection in the whole magazine, and that is what they got. A sparkly mess of an outfit topped with a furry parka and latex leggings. It's just too much shine, its even too much shine for someone who isn't pregnant.

Women of the world, would you wear this look? Or am I just biased because children and pregnancy aren't my cup of tea? There are some other great maternity looks for Fall 2007 on A Pea in the Pod's website, so take a look.
