Bridal Fashion Week - Something Spicy for Your Maids

Filed under: Events: On the Scene, Dresses

bridesmaid dressBy Anja Winikka, Editor, TheKnot.com

This chiffon bridesmaid dress by Amsale popped from all the rest in an orange-spice color. Love the way the dress moves, the flower at the waist, and the universally flattering scoop neckline too. Would she wear it again? Maybe, maybe not. But hey, it'll make for some bold and bright photos!

Lake Bell in Monique Lhuillier - I Want That!

lake bell

Looks like little Miss Monique Lhuillier had her hand in more than just Katrina Bowden's winning look at the 2009 Frick Collection Young Fellows Ball. Here, fellow partygoer Lake Bell looks supreme in this one-shouldered gown. Top half, casual; bottom half totally couture – love that! This look couldn't get any better if it tried.

At the 2009 Young Fellows Ball held at the The Frick Collection in New York City, Katrina Bowden traipsed among all of the well dressed pretty young things. She could have easily taken the cake as best dressed, hands down.

Michelle Obama in Peter Soronen - I Want That!

Despite what we are almost certain critics will say, our First Lady, Michelle Obama, knocked this one out of the park. We think she looked absolutely ravishing at the White House's annual Governors Ball this week and by the look on our President's face, he thinks so too!

Eliza Dushku in Kaufman Franco - I Want That!

eliza dushku, rachel zoeJudging by this pic, Dollhouse actress Eliza Dushku has brought (or possibly has had?) Rachel Zoe into her styling entourage. And if it's true, we say brilliant move, Eliza! Why? Because as much as we hate to even admit it, we don't think we've ever really given this red carpet cutie a second glance until we laid eyes on this marvelous metallic number.

The dress could have easily taken an overly complicated turn with the wrong accessories. But Eliza put an effortless spin on it by choosing easy hair with lots of movement and minimal accessories. All in all, we think it's sophisticated but still young and fun.

Diane Kruger in Zac Posen - I Want That!

diane krugerApparently we aren't the only ones with a major Zac Posen affliction. Gorgeous actress Diane Kruger chose a blush taffeta confection by the designer for the Berlin Film Festival. We love this gown because it takes all of the most romantic elements of 18th century French Rococo and Baroque periods and brings them up to speed with a shiny, crinkly fabric and neutral hue. Diane further modernizes the look by pairing color with color (Read: navy satin clutch) and topping it all off with a cute, jeweled headband.

Origami Inspiration from the Oscars

Filed under: Red Carpet Trends, Get the Look

dior

Fashion has long been influenced by Asian tradition and every few years we see a resurgence of geisha-esque looks which usually start on an haute couture level and take a few years to trickle down. For instance, does anyone remember John Galliano's spring 2007 collection for Christian Dior? Well, in case you don't recall, it was chock full of crazy kimonos, bright colors, and fierce origami folds which finally, in 2009, has caught on with celebs. So how can you wear the origami look that has been so prevalent on runways and red carpets the last two years?

Revealing on the Red Carpet

This ladies and gentlemen, is what a superstar looks like: Beyonce wearing the heck out of a deceptively simple looking black turtleneck dress at the Gotham Magazine gala. She's gorgeous!

This is what people are talking about when they praise Beyonce's curves. She looks like a fantasy creation, and even though she is as covered up as possible -- what kind of shoes is she even wearing? No one knows! -- nothing is left to the imagination.

And this is how you put together an outfit for an event. Her hair: striking -- pulled back, out of the way, not fighting with the dress. The only jewelry: bold but simple earrings. She's not even wearing her 18 carat engagement ring, just some shiny red nail polish.

She is, however, wearing 10 pounds of "You're damn right I'm fabulous" attitude, which is what really puts this in the StyleFab history books for us. Sasha Fierce rulz!

Of course, Beyonce isn't the only celeb who goes revealing on the red carpet. The question is: Who pulls it off, and who's revealing too much?

Rose McGowan's barely-there "dress" is a little (OK a lot) too much.

    Getty Images

Keira Knightley's tattered rags look like a stiff breeze could make the actress considerably less decent.

    Getty Images

Someone should've told Gwyneth Paltrow that you can see right through that dress -- and we'd prefer not to.

    Getty Images

That's an interesting place for see-through fabric -- fortunately Teri Hatcher can make anything look amazing.

    Getty Images

Backs are sexy, butt cracks are not -- even when it's Heidi Klum's.

    Getty Images

Tess Smith leaves very little to the imagination with this super-skimpy wrap-dress-thing.

    Getty Images

Anne Hathaway appears to have forgotten something -- it's called a bra.

    Getty Images

Kate Bosworth uses some strategically-placed stripes to conceal her private parts.

    Getty Images

Uma Thurman also seems to have forgotten her undergarments.

Jane Krakowski hit the Screen Actors Guild Awards red carpet last night, looking gorgeous in a red dress with a deep, deep neckline. And from the front, it was daring, but sexy and fun. From the side, it simply looked like a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen. All we can say is that we're pretty sure she wasn't stingy with the tape.

Is this a 30 Rock trend? Tina Fey showed off her cleavage at the Golden Globes, and now Jane showed how perky she can really be at the SAG Awards. Who's next? Seriously, if Alec Baldwin shows up at the Oscars with his shirt unbuttoned past his sternum, we're going to have a problem.

Michelle Obama, a woman with every designer in the world at her finger tips, chose to wear Narcisco Rodriguez at the "We Are One" pre-inaugural concert. You might remember this is the same designer she wore as her husband Barack accepted the Democratic Party nomination for president late last year. See below how you can get the look!

Michelle Obama - Washington Post Chooses Green Inaugural Gown

Filed under: Style in the News

Recently, the Washington Post held a First Lady Formalwear Contest, allowing readers to submit their designs for Michelle Obama's inaugural gown. Robin Givhan was the Washington Post writer in charge of selecting a winner, and while there were a couple of others we might have picked, we have to admit she made a pretty good choice with Katie Ermilio's deep forest green creation. It's elegant, appropriately youthful, striking, and sexy without showing too much of anything. And, with the suggested floor-length cape in dove gray, it's positively regal.

The Post isn't the only publication wondering what Michelle should wear for the big night -- check out the sketches WWD got from some of the country's most prominent designers below!

What Should Michelle Wear?

On January 20th 2009, Barack Obama will be sworn in as our 44th President -- instantly becoming one of the most significant leaders in United States history. What will he say? How will he act? And, most importantly, what will Michelle wear?

Style bible Women's Wear Daily has been wondering the same thing, and enlisted the world's most prominent designers to sketch ideas for the future First Lady. Check out our favorites from the American designers.

    Women's Wear Daily

Purple is undoubtedly the "it" color of the season, and Isaac Mizrahi offers a fashion-forward option that (at least to us) seems the most in keeping with what Michelle normally wears. Bonus points for offering options for Sasha and Malia, too!

    Women's Wear Daily

Regal, elegant and timeless -- a stunning formal gown from Michael Kors.

    Women's Wear Daily

The First Family would certainly be the center of attention in Oscar de la Renta's trio of red, white and blue confections.

    Women's Wear Daily

Peter Som channels Jackie K. to offer Michelle O a totally timeless, utterly sophisticated "winter white" gown.

    Women's Wear Daily

The President-elect has sworn to work closely with both parties to unite the country. And with Reem Acra's brash, take-no-prisoners gown in Republican red, his wife could show her support for that agenda on her first night as First Lady.

    Women's Wear Daily

Tracy Reese suggests a delightfully elegant, classically feminine gown for the lady of the hour.

    Women's Wear Daily

Betsey Johnson's gown gives a nod to her punk-rock sensibility, while boldly embracing the patriotism of the occasion.

    Women's Wear Daily

A marked contrast from Betsey's in-your-face, inauguration-ball bananza is an ultra-refined evening gown by Diane Von Furstenberg.

Olga Kurylenko
We totally understand the appeal of this dress, but we feel like we've seen it before ... perhaps on our Barbie when we were kids. But maybe that's exactly what Olga Kurylenko loved about it -- it's super feminine and very, very "Movie Star." A style like this takes glamor to a whole new level.
