Bionic Beauty's Sunless Tanner Tips
With the sun and hence swimsuit season upon us, let's share tips on sunless tanners. Below are my fail safe tricks to get a natural looking glow sans streaks, blotches or skin nightmares.

* Exfoliate during your shower. This is so very important to getting an even application with sunless tanners. I use a bath pouf or a loofah with my body wash and wash my entire body. Then, I very lightly wash with a non-moisturizing exfoliant or microdermabrasion body wash (like Lancome's Microdermabrasion for body). Your goal is to get an even layer of fresh skin. Without exfoliating, your skin has an uneven "shed" of skin cells causing the skin to absorb the tanner at different rates.

Guest Beauty Blogger Wednesdays - Nadine Jolie on Spluging and Saving

Filed under: Hair Care, Skin Care

It's Guest Beauty Blogger Wednesday, and we've got Nadine Jolie, a former beauty editor who blogs at Jolie Nadine, and has authored the books Beauty Confidential and Confessions of a Beauty Addict.

One of the most frequent questions I get is: "What should I splurge on and how can I save?"

I think only with hair do you really get what you pay for. Splurge on a gorgeous cut and artful highlights and your hair will be easier to style, will grow out more evenly and you'll be more likely to love what you see in the mirror every morning.

Is this a hard and fast rule? No. You can get nice color from a box – although from-a-box highlights truly are dicey – and you can get a good cut from Susie Q at the local salon. The more complex the style and intricate the color, however, the more you'll benefit from a pro. If you have the same color God blessed you with, rarely blowdry your hair because it air dries perfectly, and haven't the foggiest why everybody moans about frizz and damage, then Supercuts and Feria away! For the rest of us – you know, us split-ended, monthly root-touch-up requiring, coarse-stranded, thick-haired gals with cowlicks? You'd better believe we'll see results from a great stylist. ("Great" means, say, $100 - $200 ... not $1000. We are not billionaires here, people.)

Now. As for pretty much everything else ... with the exception of powders (more on that below) ... more expensive does not equal better! Cleanser, face moisturizer/serum, nail polish, intensive conditioner ... you can find genuinely amazing buys for all at the drugstore! Below, my all-time favorites (all of which are currently carving out real estate in my bathroom).

Guest Beauty Blogger Wednesdays - Nadine Jolie on Maybelline Lash Stiletto

It's Guest Beauty Blogger Wednesday! And today we've got former beauty editor and present beauty star Nadine Jolie, editor-in-chief of the blog Jolie Nadine, and author of the books Beauty Confidential and Confessions of a Beauty Addict. Here, she gives us the scoop on Maybelline Lash Stiletto mascara.

There's a new mascara on the block: Maybelline Lash Stiletto.

Now, I am beyond skeptical when it comes to Maybelline and mascaras–I know that everybody else in the world seems to hold hands and sing songs and praise Jesus when it comes to the wonders of Maybelline Great Lash, but I, personally, cannot stand it. Lash Stiletto, on the other hand, isn't the best mascara I've ever come across, but it's definitely not the worst ... and, in fact, I think it's pretty darn good for a drugstore offering.

Guest Beauty Blogger Wednesdays - Nadine Jolie On Sevin Nyne Tanning Spray

Filed under: Cosmetics, Skin Care, Beauty Tips

In our humble opinion, there's no better way to get over The Hump (that would be you, dear Wednesday) than by talking incessantly about beauty. So, from now until forever, we're hereby declaring Guest Beauty Blogger Wednesdays. Each hump day, we'll be tapping a different Total Beauty blogger to sound-off on StyleList. Today, we're talking beauty with Nadine Jolie, editor-in-chief of the blog Jolie Nadine, and author of the books Beauty Confidential and Confessions of a Beauty Addict.

Sevin Nyne Tanning Spray

Recently, I spent most of the day at a TV shoot hanging out with Lorit Simon, co-creator (with Lindsay Lohan!) of the new self-tanning spray Sevin Nyne. Sevin Nyne has received a ton of press recently–no doubt initially because of the Lindsay connection–but the big shocker here is that the spray not only works, but is fabulous! If you're like me, your biggest complaint about self-tanner is that is smells disgusting. As a self-proclaimed self-tanning expert, I've managed to bypass streaks and orange palms (okay, most of the time!), but the gross-smell thing really trips me up. Sure, I like to be bronzey as much as the next girl, but Eau de Sour Milk is so not my thing, and that's what you get with pretty much everything on the market. Sevin Nyne gets the full Jolie treatment because, hey, it's 2009, and it's high-time we had a caramel-scented tanner that won't go rancid after two hours and–oh, yeah!–actually works.

Guest Beauty Blogger Wednesdays - The Nail Polish Pendant

This week's Guest Beauty Blogger, All Lacquered Up, dishes on her newest discovery - nail polish pendants!

I'm always looking for creative uses for my beauty products. I love discovering new ways to utilize my overwhelming beauty arsenal and Total Beauty found a slew of innovative ways to turn beauty closet staples into multitaskers.

Well, have I got a new one for you. Like infomercial legend, Mike Levy and his crazy sweaters, I have found THE discovery for us nail polish fanatics.

The nail polish pendant! How many times have we described a polish as being jewel-like or having a jewel tone? And I know I can't be the only one who has tried to coordinate polish with my favorite gemstones. I mean, haven't you ever wished your favorite shade was jewelry? Wish no more! My genius pal Tracey from Ginger Kitty Designs has found a way to make that dream a reality. That's right, we're talking nail polish AS jewelry.

This week's Guest Beauty Blogger, All Lacquered Up, dishes on customizing your nail polish.

Ask any beauty junkie and we'll admit, no matter how many shades, fragrances or formulations are thrown our way we are still restless for more. Even if we find that perfect product, after a while we'll wish it was a bit more "something". Deeper in color, smoother in feel, slightly more floral, etc. Let's face, it we're just never satisfied.

Unfortunately, in this economy we just can't afford to buy every new shade that comes on the market. I mean how many times have we plunked down our hard earned money, only to end up disappointed with a shade that's too sheer, too dark or just plain wrong? Our wallets can't take that risk now. Of course if that's happened recently, you're obviously not a regular reader of All Lacquered Up and Total Beauty product reviews.

Now before you go pitching that unwanted purchase, consider customizing it to suit your needs. In the world of lacquer when we can't find the color we want we become kids again, mixing colors like we used to with finger paints. It's all about experimenting, letting your imagination go and relying on our childhood art lessons about the color wheel. Say it with me folks, yellow and blue make green.

Go Green With Healthier Nail Polish

Big 3 Free. Non-toxic. Chemical-free. Water-based. Pregnancy Safe. Healthy. Eco-conscious.

These are all buzz words that the polish industry throws at us to make their product look healthier, more eco-friendly, safer, etc. but, what does it all mean and who makes what?

If you haven't read my article about Big 3 Free nail polish, I suggest you start there to familiarize yourself with the ingredients the term refers to. I use "healthier" in quotes to describe these lacquers since the jury is still out as to whether traditional formulas are really a health risk.

Guest Beauty Blogger Wednesdays - The Muse Talks Moisturizers

Filed under: Skin Care, Beauty Tips

Today, our Guest Beauty Blogger is The Muse from Musings of a Muse -- an addictive beauty blog that centers around product reviews, with an honest opinion, real product photos and a unique and original spin on makeup. Here, The Muse reviews SteamCream - a multitasking moisturizer for face and body.

The Muse thinks that the secret and solution to life, the universe, and everything is actually SteamCream.

You're curious now, right? A few months ago the Muse discovered a little product called SteamCream. SteamCream happens to be a multipurpose cream that can be used on your face or your body (unlike all these on Total Beauty's worst moisturizers list). I know, I know you're screaming in agonizing pain at the idea of using one cream for your face AND your body. How horrifying right? How can one single product be used on the delicate skin of your face plus the rough parts of your body like elbows and knees? Rest assured the Muse promises it's a miracle in a cute little tin.

Benefit has succeeded yet again and has a big winner on its hands with its new Hello Flawless! Powder.

Fantastically good stuff. Count this Muse impressed! And you can go read more glowing Benefit product reviews here. Anyway, I've used quite a lot of powders in my day but I don't think I've come across as richly pigmented powder as Benefit Hello Flawless. If you use a powder foundation you're seriously going to want to give this a try as it truly covers literally EVERYTHING and possibly the kitchen sink too.

Make sure you know basic eyeshadow application tips before you start!

Products Used:
Liquid black liner of your choice, wash of a neutral, low-shimmer color of your choice, semi-matte darker brown for the crease, and highlight color of your choice.
