Mischa Barton Kicks Off the Harrods Summer Sale in Style

Living in London, I find that my city's people -- a generally unenthusiastic bunch -- occasionally make a big fuss over things we Americans take for granted. Most recently: deep discounts and Mischa Barton. (Seriously, she is so big here, she even has her own collection of handbags, in addition to her line of headbands.)

So it's fitting that The Harrods summer sale (or more accurately, Harrods' only sale of the year) was opened by the British-born/American-bred actress, who cut the red ribbon and rode around in Harrods' horse-drawn carriage to get the crowds pumped for the iconic store's hotly anticipated shopping event. (It's big: Lanvin dresses are 50 percent off.)

A machine-washable evening gown, what every woman needs

Last year, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual gala, I got into a huge fight with supermodel Gisele Bundchen. The Brazilian bombshell thought I was trying to make a move on her man, Tom Brady. Things got heated quickly, and the 5'11 stunner hurled red wine in my direction -- completely ruining my vintage Dior couture gown. Upset and embarrassed, I fled back to Texas -- never to return to New York again.

Syke! But if I did get into a fierce catfight like the one I just made up, I hope I'm wearing a beautiful Sara Berman evening gown.

$120,000 shoes guarded by deadly cobra

A well protected shoeWhat would you do if you owned a $120,000 pair shoes? You could hide them someplace secret or keep them locked up in a safe, but that just doesn't seem like enough protection for footwear worth more than some houses.

Rene Caovilla, the designer behind the world's most expensive pair of shoes, had a novel idea for when the diamond-encrusted sandals were on display at Harrods in London. In addition to the store's normal security (which is notoriously intense), Caovilla hired deadly Egyptian cobra snakes to guard the shoe counter.

As you might suspect, the stunt proved very effective in keeping people's hands where they belonged.
