Behind the scenes with a red carpet photographer: Cannes round-up

Filed under: Events: On the Scene

Michael Buckner is a fashion and celebrity photographer who travels around the world taking pictures on the red carpet. He gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the hottest entertainment industry events.

The rain wont stop, and when you're riding in a scooter there is no better idea than to drink vodka on the rocks with a lens all night. Oh, and work too.

By the time I made it to the Belvedere Vodka Jagger Dagger Party, I had already clocked 16 hours. So it was time to relax. Which was inevitable because no security guard in the V.I.P. club in Pointe Croissette cared that was the hired photographer this night. "Unlimited access" quickly turned into "hanging with the papparrazzi." Mark Ronson spun some tasty grooves as Jade Jagger, daughter of Rolling Stone Mick Jagger, displayed her $250,000 diamond and gem studded ice pick.

Marco Zanini has some big shoes to fill

Filed under: Style in the News

If you are like me you probably haven't heard of Italian designer Marco Zanini, but you will be hearing a lot about him soon. Zanini, who was the head designer of womenswear, ready-to-wear and haute couture at Versace has been given the much coveted gig as the creative director at the new Halston. The label was bought by movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, who as we previously mentioned, put Jimmy Choo diva Tamara Mellon and infamous stylist Rachel Zoe on his creative advisory team. Zanini gushed to WWD that his new job is a dream come true. Zanini has to move from Milan to New York and will start work in September.

It's not a bad choice, Zanini has probably learned a lot about the art of the flash both at Versace and at his previous job at Dolce and Gabbana. Still, I would have rather have seen an American get the job, if only because the story of Halston himself , of a Midwestern boy with big dreams who changed the world of design, was such an American tale.

Harvey buys Halston

Filed under: Style in the News

Earlier today British Vogue reported that Harvey Weinstein, the powerful movie producer, was looking to pick up the iconic Halston design house. The assumption was that Weinstein's galpal, the fabulous Georgina Chapman of Marchesa might be involved somehow. But now WWD breaks the news that Weinstein has bought the brand and the person who will be revitalizing the brand is Tamara Mellon, the long-legged founder of the Jimmy Choo brand. Can the goddess of high heels pump fresh life into the brand, whose heyday was way back in the Studio 54 era? It certainly will be interesting to watch Tamara try.
