People Tree's ethical runway show

Filed under: Runway Trends, Clothing, Green Fashion

People Tree, a pioneer in the world of eco-conscious fashion, held a swanky runway show in the hip London club Whiskey Mist at Zeta last night, and it wasn't only the clothing that was held to ethical standards. People Tree chose to use models from Quintessentially Models, an agency that "takes an ethically-based approach to model management refusing to represent any 'size zero' models."

Don't think for a second, though, that this was a bunch of chubby hippies looking at tie-dye t-shirts. People Tree's Autumn/Winter 2008 is full of trendy dresses, tops, and capes. Check out the gallery to see a sampling of styles.

Ali Stephens, quicker than lightning

While she doesn't bare an "S" across her chest, model up-and-comer Ali Stephens is somewhat of a Super Woman when it comes to wind sprints and brisk walking.

In this interview she recently did with New York Magazine, the 17-year-old Calvin Klein model told the reporter that she could run a mile in 5: 31.

Yes. That would be five minutes and thirty-one seconds, which is about the same amount of time it takes us to even get motivated enough to get of the bed and commit to a jog around the park.

But Ali is pro at this (she ran cross country throughout high school), so we don't feel too bad about ourselves. In this clip, watch as she demonstrates her runway walk in the grass and discusses her new top model status.

The weight debate gets heavy

Filed under: Runway Trends, Style in the News

There was an uproar in the fashion world in fall 2006 when Madrid and Milan fashion weeks turned away models without a healthy BMI. Since then, a debate has erupted over why America hasn't taken a cue from its European counterparts and imposed a minimum weight restriction on models appearing in fashion shows. Recently, a new voice has joined the party and he has some personal insight into the problem.

Former Halston designer Bradley Bayou had witnessed the industry's sample sizes shrinking, and he went along with it. His oldest daughter constantly tried to lose enough weight so that she could fit into his designs and look as pretty as the models he dressed.

Bayou was unaware that his daughter suffered from an eating disorder (and that he'd been contributing to it) until she entered therapy after a breakdown that had landed her in the emergency room. It was then that he realized the impact that the skeletal fashion models have on women across the world. This was three years ago, and Bayou isn't about to stop spreading his message: Fashion Can Kill.

BET's Rip the Runway: Swimwear

Filed under: Runway Trends, Style in the News, Clothing, Swimwear and Lingerie

Some of the swimwear shown by Amaya Swimwear looked like something you might pick up this summer for your neighbor's pool party -- fresh, pretty, flattering, and totally wearable.

Other pieces, however, were High Fashion Swimwear, with capes, cutouts, and details you wouldn't dare get wet -- perfect for days out on the yacht or that A-list pool party in the Hamptons. Seriously fashionable or seriously wearable, all the suits had stunning details and interesting accents.

I loved that they ran the gamut -- it almost seemed like real people could wear even this to the beach, given the proper motivation (like promise of really, really beautiful boys). And, for the most part, the models were beautiful and real; a couple looked underfed, but most of them looked healthy and comfortable in their skin. And that is a Good Thing for those of us feeling just a little nervous about beach season.

Be sure to check out the gallery of these designs and others from Rip the Runway!
